Articles

RIT community members may access full-text via RIT Libraries licensed databases: http://library.rit.edu/databases/ A history of the education of deaf persons is by its very nature a study of social and cultural change. This notion is epitomized in tracing prevailing attitudes about deaf people and how they learn. Such an understanding of deafness as an educational condition shapes the historical highlights discussed in this chapter.

Ch 710 Pietism In The Christian Tradition, J. Steven O'Malley

Syllabi

This course will have these objectives. First, the major objective will be a preliminary examination of the principal figures in Continental (German and Dutch) Pietism of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, with attention given to their writings within the historical and theological contexts. A second objective is to examine the implications of 4 these Pietist sources as a primary expression of Christian renewal in modern Christianity, and to enhance our grounding in the doctrine and praxis of Christian ministry for the present day. Third, we will identify American movements and denominations that represent an interaction between Continental Pietist sources …

"Everybody Get Together": The Sixties Counterculture And Public Space, 1964--1967, Jill Katherine Silos

Doctoral Dissertations

Historians and cultural analysts have traditionally considered the sixties counterculture an apolitical phenomenon by historians and other analysts. Yet concentrated examination of the public activities of the counterculture in San Francisco from 1963 to 1967 reveals that they were engaged in the creation of a public political culture that challenged the power of civil authorities to regulate the uses of parks, streets and sidewalks. In doing so, the counterculture constituted a distinct community with a political agenda.

This thesis is demonstrated through an analysis of the development of an ethos toward public space in the Beat movement and Merry Prankster …

Tres Vidas, Una Guerra Rafael Iznaga, Bárbara Pérez Y Gregoria Quesada Entre La Emancipación Y La Ciudadanía, Rebecca Scott

Book Chapters

In this article, Scott takes a microhistorian approach as she looks at the ways in which three Cubans of color (Rafael Iznaga, Bárbara Pérez and Gregoria Quesada), from the same rural neighborhood, sought to define and attain citizenship during and immediately after the Cuban War of Independence from 1895-1898. Juxtaposing oral and written sources, Scott shows how such evidence can be both complementary and contradictory, and how each source should be examined in light of the others.

Rafael Iznaga fought in the war as a soldier of the Liberation Army, and returned with prestige and status. While his life can …

An Integrated Approach To Teaching Washington State History In A Seventh Grade Humanities Block, Erika Lee Martin Jan 2003

An Integrated Approach To Teaching Washington State History In A Seventh Grade Humanities Block, Erika Lee Martin

All Graduate Projects

For the 2002-2003 school year, Sultan School District (WA) made the decision to move the Washington State History course from the high school level to be taught at the middle school level, specifically in the seventh grade Humanities block for a semester. This decision was made to be in compliance with the future state Social Studies requirements. Since the Humanities course was already based on the theory of integrating Geography with Language Arts, a new curriculum needed to be developed to incorporate the new Washington State History material. A team of teachers decided to take this task on and develop …

C.C. Pat Fleming: Houston, Texas, Landscape Architect, Paige Allred Phillips Jan 2003

C.C. Pat Fleming: Houston, Texas, Landscape Architect, Paige Allred Phillips

LSU Master's Theses

C. C. Pat Fleming practiced landscape architecture in Houston and the surrounding South from the 1920s through the 1990s. He came to be considered one of Houston’s preeminent landscape architects, and his role in the profession cannot be overlooked. This thesis traces the evolution of Fleming’s design style over the course of his career, analyzing a selected cross section of his works against three design movements that occurred during his lifetime: the Beaux-Arts tradition, the Colonial Revival movement, and the Modernist movement. For investigating the work of Pat Fleming, the method of historical research is used. A historical context study …

Island Of Tranquility: Rhetoric And Identification At Brigham Young University During The Vietnam Era, Brian D. Jackson Jan 2003

Island Of Tranquility: Rhetoric And Identification At Brigham Young University During The Vietnam Era, Brian D. Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

The author argues that beyond religious beliefs and conservative politics, rhetorical identification played an important role in the relative calmness of the BYU campus during the turbulent Sixties. Using Bitzer's rhetorical situation theory and Burke's identification theory, the author shows that BYU's calm campus can be explained as a result of communal identification with a conservative ethos. He also shows that apparent epistemological shortcomings of Bitzer's model can be resolved by considering the power of identification to create salience and knowledge in rhetorical situations. During the Sixties, BYU administration developed policies on physical appearance that invited students to take on …

The Quest For Identity: A Conversation With John O'Leary, Robert Callahan

Constructing the Past

This article describes a discussion that the author had with John O'Leary, an Irish poet. It discusses the nature of what it means to be "Irish" and "Irish-American" and talks about how many modern people of Irish descent are focusing more on the ancient Irish traditions rather than the stereotypical Irish-American images of famine victims and green beer.
