Education For Victory: An Analysis Of Social Studies Education In American Secondary Schools During World War Ii, Rachael E. O'Dell Oct 2016

Education For Victory: An Analysis Of Social Studies Education In American Secondary Schools During World War Ii, Rachael E. O'Dell

Student Publications

Secondary schools during World War II were viewed as a vital component of the war effort on the home front. The nation’s youth were seen as important potential contributors to the war effort, and were educated as such. The atmosphere of total war especially affected social studies classes at this level. An analysis of contemporary educational journals and supplementary teaching materials reveals that secondary school students were virtually indoctrinated with democratic and patriotic values in their social studies classes in wartime schools. Social studies classes thus functioned as a route through which students could be encouraged to participate in the …

A Milestone On The Road To Independence? Singapore’S Catastrophic 1954 Floods, Fiona Williamson Oct 2016

A Milestone On The Road To Independence? Singapore’S Catastrophic 1954 Floods, Fiona Williamson

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

A combination of torrential and prolonged rains, high tides, and insufficient flood control caused some of the worst flooding known in Singapore in the first two weeks of December 1954. Early 1950s Singapore was a British Crown Colony and part of the Federation of Malaya. It was a particularly tense time politically, with the rise of nationalist movements and an ongoing state of “emergency” declared by the British government in response to a perceived communist threat supported by some members of the Chinese community. The 1954 floods were a disaster that piled more pressure onto an already stressed community. More …

Eight black African men from East, West, Southern, and Central Africa, describe the manifestation of their soccer fandom for the English team they support as well as their favorite local African club team. Based on the observations gathered through participant observations and interviews, …

Children's Book and Media Review

Micay is a 12-year-old Incan girl known in her village as “The Ugly One” because of a large scar that runs along the right side of her face. Because of being bullied relentlessly by the boys in the village, she has become secluded and tries to avoid others so as not to shame them with her ugliness. But all that changes one day when a stranger comes to town and gives her the gift of a baby macaw. As the macaw (named Sumac) grows bigger and more handsome (and also occasionally defends Micay from her bullies), Micay also grows in …

Book: My Autobiography, Aylea Stephens Sep 2016

Book: My Autobiography, Aylea Stephens

Children's Book and Media Review

Book: My Autobiography is the story of books as told from the perspective of a unique character, Book itself. Between black and white illustrations and an occasional quote about books, Book describes its history from the days of storytelling before writing was invented to the burning of books. It discusses the invention of paper and the alphabet, the evolution of copying books to the printing press, the development of libraries, and the potential future of books in the digital age. All of these things help provide a broad, simple overview of the history of books, writing, and storytelling.

Bo At Ballard Creek, Sydnee Burr

Children's Book and Media Review

When Mean Millie asked a gold miner for a favor, he had no idea she would hand him a swaddled, blond haired, tiny bundle and recite the name of an Alaskan orphanage. Outside the orphanage gates, the two gold miners who agreed to the task fell in love with the baby's charm, were disappointed by the strict damp look of the place, and enthusiastically decided to raise the child themselves. They named her Bo, and set out on their way to raising a child on the Alaskan frontier.

Beyond Courage: The Untold Story Of Jewish Resistance During The Holocaust, Liz Kazandzhy

Children's Book and Media Review

If someone thought that Jews went to their deaths “like lambs to the slaughter” during the Holocaust, this book will certainly prove them wrong. From the very beginning when Hitler first introduced anti-Semitic legislature, to the very end when WWII came to a close, Jews throughout Europe resisted physically, mentally, and even spiritually in order to stay alive and put an end to the evil that was being perpetrated around them. This book presents story after story of courage and resistance of Jewish men, women, and even children throughout Europe during the Holocaust. It includes accounts about hiding and fleeing …

Hidden Like Anne Frank: 14 True Stories Of Survival, Liz Kazandzhy Sep 2016

Hidden Like Anne Frank: 14 True Stories Of Survival, Liz Kazandzhy

Children's Book and Media Review

As the title alludes, this book is a compilation of survival stories that are similar to Anne Frank’s. These true stories are told by the survivors themselves, all Jews from the Netherlands, who were forced into hiding during World War II when they were just children. Each recollection is unique, since backgrounds, experiences, and outcomes differed for every individual, but they are bound together by a common culture (both Dutch and Jewish), a tragic history, and themes of courage and kindness of countless people that allowed these children to survive.

Silhouettes Of A Silent Female’S Authority: A Psychoanalytic And Feminist Perspective On The Art Of Kara Walker, Angelica E. Perez Sep 2016

Silhouettes Of A Silent Female’S Authority: A Psychoanalytic And Feminist Perspective On The Art Of Kara Walker, Angelica E. Perez

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

The focus of my research centers on the contemporary work of Georgia-based artist, Kara Elizabeth Walker. In conducting extensive research on the life of the artist as well as three select artworks which recall the antebellum slave era within the south, I argue the explicit presence of the power of the enslaved prepubescent girl and young woman. The three select works that I intend to analyze are Burn, a cut-paper silhouette on canvas created in 1998, The Invisible Beauty, a mixed media piece made in 2001, and Cut, a paper cut-out silhouette made in 1998.

In a …

Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination That Changed America Forever, Pat Frade Sep 2016

Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination That Changed America Forever, Pat Frade

Children's Book and Media Review

Killing Lincoln is a non-fiction (though it reads like historical fiction) account of the end of the Civil War, the assassination of Lincoln, and the capture of John Wilkes Booth and his conspirators (time period between March 4, 1865 thru July 7, 1865). The book is divided into 4 parts: total war, the ides of death, the long good Friday, and the chase. Part 1 describes the final days of the Civil War as Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant are locked in battle. John Wilkes Booth is introduced as a Northerner who is a southern sympathizer and is …

A Connecticut Yankee In Jeff Davis's Court, Jeffrey L. Lauck Aug 2016

A Connecticut Yankee In Jeff Davis's Court, Jeffrey L. Lauck

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

For the past ten weeks or so, I have been interning at Richmond National Battlefield Park. The experience has been like no other. I began the summer with a few goals. First, I wanted to see if working for the National Park Service was everything that my fellow park geeks said it was. Second, I wanted to enrich my understanding of the Civil War by focusing my study on one particular community’s experience in the Civil War (Richmond). Third, as a born-and-raised New Englander, I wanted to see what it was like to spend a summer in Dixie. Finally, …

Dead Center: Polarization And The Democratic Party, 1932-2000, Colin S. Campbell Aug 2016

Dead Center: Polarization And The Democratic Party, 1932-2000, Colin S. Campbell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Polarization forced massive changes in the institutions of Washington throughout the 20th century, and the Democratic Party played a key role throughout. Under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Democratic Party formed the powerful New Deal coalition. The coalition faltered in the turbulent 1960s under the pressures of the Vietnam War and racial unrest. The chaotic 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago dealt the coalition a mortal wound. Young voters and activists gained an outsized voice in the party. Several crushing defeats in presidential elections followed as the party chose unelectable candidates who appealed to the passions of left-wing activists …

A History Of The Audiology Program At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln: 1920 To 2015, T. Newell Decker

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Programs for the hearing impaired have been in existence at the University of Nebraska for many years. However, there is no comprehensive history of these efforts. This work is an attempt to provide a complete picture of these programs and to detail the history and growth of the Audiology Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. When the author came to the University in 1977 audiology was already well established at the University as well as in the State. After joining the faculty, the author served in the capacity of Coordinator of the Audiology and Hearing Science Program from 1977 until …
