Notes From Johannesburg - Dialogues And Itineraries Of The South From Kinshasa: Art, History, And Education, David Andrew
Artl@s Bulletin
This text was originally a brief speech in a debate – Dialogues and Itineraries of the South from Kinshasa: Art, History and Education that took place at Mário de Andrade Library’s Auditorium in São Paulo (Brazil) on October 26th 2016. It draws from questions and discussions in Kinshasa, concerning arts education, the challenges in decolonizing curriculum and methods, connecting them to South African experiences, particularly at the Wits School of Arts (Johannesburg) and also from the Another Road Map School research group workshops.

Miami: Then & Now, Dana Mcgeehan
Library Research Scholars Program 2017-2018
This project consists of an ArcGIS Story Map of Miami-Dade County. Each “then” and “now” photo set will be marked with an icon on the map. The side-bar will show viewers two photos of the same physical space. These photos can be placed side-by-side. These spaces will mostly be buildings, but may also focus on the landscape through maps and how this has changed over time. The “then” photos come primarily from the UM Library’s Special Collections and the Florida State Archives website, floridamemory.com. The “now” photos are ones that I’ve taken myself. A paragraph or two of contextual/background information …
A Study In Sovereignty: Federalism, Political Culture, And The Future Of Conservatism, Clint Hamilton
A Study In Sovereignty: Federalism, Political Culture, And The Future Of Conservatism, Clint Hamilton
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis confronts symptoms of an issue which is eroding at the principles of conservative advocacy, specifically those dealing with federalism. It contrasts modern definitions of federalism with those which existed in the late 1700s, and then attempts to determine the cause of the change. Concluding that the change was caused by a shift in American political identity, the author argues that the conservative movement must begin a conversation on how best to adapt to the change to prevent further drifting away from conservative principles.

The History Of Coffee And Its Concurrent Marketing Strategies, Kristin Rudeen
The History Of Coffee And Its Concurrent Marketing Strategies, Kristin Rudeen
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
This thesis explores how the advertising of coffee has evolved over the past three centuries by comparing the timing of historical events with their concurrent coffee advertisements and the corresponding popularity of coffee and its evolving variations. I have conducted primary research by analyzing coffee advertisements in newspapers, commercials, magazines, and on social media. I have used this research to determine when companies initiated different approaches in order to advertise their coffee. Additionally, I discuss how work culture played a role in the methods coffee producers and companies used to reach their consumers. More specifically, I have identified five different …
Honor, Courage, Commitment: Navy Recruitment Posters In World War Ii, Shelby A. Georges
Honor, Courage, Commitment: Navy Recruitment Posters In World War Ii, Shelby A. Georges
Honors College Theses
Navy recruitment posters from World War II are an important piece of American culture. The iconic signage can be seen in antique stores and textbooks alike. However, these posters provide more than just bold imagery and vintage decor. By analyzing recruitment posters as if they were advertisements and placing them in the context of the time period, many facets of American identity can be understood, especially regarding race, gender, and patriotism. These posters, while they almost never stated the specific outlined duties of Naval careers or requirements for enlisting, advertised to readers under the premise that they understood the guidelines …

An Examination Of Historical, Pedagogical, And Performance Aspects Of The Cimbasso In Standard And Modern Literature, Jens Mikel Peterson
An Examination Of Historical, Pedagogical, And Performance Aspects Of The Cimbasso In Standard And Modern Literature, Jens Mikel Peterson
Open Access Dissertations
The cimbasso is an Italian low brass instrument created during the nineteenth century for the operas of Giuseppe Verdi. Although Verdi’s earlier scores utilized different versions of the cimbasso, Verdi’s last operas Aida and Falstaff employed an updated cimbasso similar to the model used today. The presence of the cimbasso within Italian opera literature undoubtedly advanced throughout the twentieth century because of opera musicians who stayed historically correct to Verdi’s writing. As the cimbasso has gained popularity among opera musicians throughout the world, more specifically, Los Angeles, freelance musicians ultimately motivated film composers to write for the cimbasso in film …

The Progression Of Emotional Trauma From 1688 To 2018: Finding Reality In The Abstract, Jacqueline S. Way
The Progression Of Emotional Trauma From 1688 To 2018: Finding Reality In The Abstract, Jacqueline S. Way
2018 Entries
Since the conclusion of the Second World War, understanding trauma and PTSD in relation to the progression of both history and basic human nature, especially during times of uncertainty, has grown in popularity. The study of PTSD was first introduced by Johannes Hofer, in 1688, as a form of nostalgia, but in recent decades, the definition of emotional trauma has been debated. Siegfried Sassoon, a famous poet during the World Wars, wrote about trauma in terms of its impact. Originally, it was thought trauma could only exist if the world moved in a linear nature, not cyclical. But as society …

Journalism And Human Rights: From The Abolition Of The British Slave Trade, The Aids Crisis, And Injustices Beyond And In-Between, Andrew Henderson
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The conception of human rights is one that is enshrined within the shared, collective history of humanity. Encompassing secular traditions, Asian religions and traditions, and monotheistic religions and perspectives as a base for what would come to evolve into universal human rights. Throughout history these traditions and religions have all played a role in shaping where we are at today in terms of human rights. Yet the road which led to a universal declaration of rights was not paved with ease. From the onset of Aristotle, Plato, Hammurabi, other secular authors, and culminating to the end of the French Revolution …

This research focuses on the Cape Town Free Walking Tours and investigates the importance of the role that tour guides play in mediating space and heritage. Drawing upon literature surrounding tourism, the tourist city, as well as memory and heritage, this study uses a mixed methods approach, both surveying tour participants as well as interviewing tour guides and managers of the Cape Town Free Walking Tours. In addition, this research also draws from my own experience participating in walking tours and making notes through participant observation. This research shows that tourism spaces are created, curated and maintained through a performance …

Maritime Terrorism, Richard Farrell
Naval War College Review
As groups prepare to memorialize the sixth anniversary of 9/11, Americans seem to have forgotten that terrorism has long had a prominent role in American history. Geoffrey Blainey describes American anarchists and assassins in the 1900s who were the equivalent of modern suicide bombers.1 Blainey re- minds us that terrorism killed an American president (William McKinley) in 1901, a hundred years before 9/11.

Lada and Radu are siblings, children of the Wallachian prince, but they couldn’t be more different. Where Lada wraps herself in layers of anger and stark realism, Radu is kind and sensitive. The siblings find common ground in Mehmed, the third son of the sultan. Lada creates a fiercely passionate and loyal relationship with him while Radu harbors strong, forbidden feelings for Mehmed. When Mehmed becomes heir to the throne …
