More Than The Vote: The Nineteenth Amendment As Proxy For Gender Equality, Tracy A. Thomas
More Than The Vote: The Nineteenth Amendment As Proxy For Gender Equality, Tracy A. Thomas
Akron Law Faculty Publications
This essay first details the origins of women's political demand for the vote as part of a comprehensive social reform. It then discusses the four strands of the comprehensive early women's rights agenda for gender equality focused on the political state, domestic family, economic industry, and religious church. Finally, it connects the suffrage activism with demands for an equal rights amendment to realize the full civil rights of equality envisioned by and for women. This long view of women's rights shows it was never only about the vote; rather, the vote stood as a shorthand for a complete revolution of …
Gulf Coast Marine Laboratories Past, Present And Future, Donald F. Boesch
Gulf Coast Marine Laboratories Past, Present And Future, Donald F. Boesch
Gulf and Caribbean Research
I spent my nearly 50—year career in marine science working at marine laboratories, most of that as a chief executive officer. So, it is appropriate that my reflections are about marine laboratories, rather than my own science. After relating my career course, I turn my attention to the history and development of marine laboratories along the U.S. coast of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). Surprisingly, the region’s first laboratory was actually constructed in 1903 at Cameron, LA, but operated less than a decade before closing. It was not until after World War II that the university—affiliated marine laboratories of today …

What Rome Really Adopted From Ancient Greece, Christian J. Vella
What Rome Really Adopted From Ancient Greece, Christian J. Vella
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Roman conquest of the Greek city-states and the appropriation of many aspects of its culture, especially architecture and art, is well known. But what of the many great philosophies that began in the various city-states of Ancient Greece? This piece is made in attempt to answer this question. The scope of these sources will start with the beginning of the Western Philosophical Tradition, with Thales of Miletus and the Milesian, all the way up to, but not including, the foundation of the Christian Philosophical Tradition. After the year 146 BC if a philosopher is born in a Greek-City state, …

Practices Of Intellectual Labor In The Republic Of Letters: Leibniz And Edward Bernard On Language And European Origins, Michael C. Carhart
Practices Of Intellectual Labor In The Republic Of Letters: Leibniz And Edward Bernard On Language And European Origins, Michael C. Carhart
History Faculty Publications
For a project on the origins and migrations of the European nations, Leibniz wanted to see a comparative lexicon purporting to derive the Germanic languages from Asiatic sources. Friends in nearby Gotha were known to have the book; its author had corresponded with Leibniz a few years earlier. But actually getting the book was more difficult than one might expect. In addition to the actual logistics and manners of scholarly communication in the late seventeenth century, this essay shows what scholars were trying to accomplish by establishing the prehistoric origins of the modern nations.

"It's More Than Just Religion:" Teaching History In A Catholic School, Colleen Fitzpatrick
"It's More Than Just Religion:" Teaching History In A Catholic School, Colleen Fitzpatrick
Journal of Catholic Education
This study explores how one teacher, Rebecca, makes sense of teaching history in a Catholic school. This Catholic school had a clear religious mission and did not have required curriculum or high-stakes tests. Yet, findings indicate that Rebecca did not attend to the religious mission in her teaching and, in absence of curricula or high-stakes tests, she relied heavily on the textbook. Findings demonstrate the need for a greater understanding of what curricular content is being taught and learned in Catholic elementary and secondary schools and how it aligns with the mission and purpose of Catholic schools.
Search For Identity In Post-War Lebanon: Arab Vs Phoenician, Ibrahim A. Ghalioum
Search For Identity In Post-War Lebanon: Arab Vs Phoenician, Ibrahim A. Ghalioum
Communication
This study uses textual analysis and network mapping in order to understand the rhetoric surrounding Phoenicianism in modern day Lebanon, using 1,336 data points from a political discussion forum. The ability of rhetoric grounded in science to persuade others of genetically essentialist views is examined, as well as the ability of social constructionism to naturally resist such rhetoric. We identify common themes found in our data set, the use of science based ethos in Phoenicianist rhetoric, and the growth (or lack thereof) of the Phoenicianist network in order to answer this question. Our research indicates that science based rhetoric and …

A Survey Of Prediction And Classification Techniques In Multicore Processor Systems, Cristinel Ababei, Milad Ghorbani Moghaddam
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In multicore processor systems, being able to accurately predict the future provides new optimization opportunities, which otherwise could not be exploited. For example, an oracle able to predict a certain application's behavior running on a smart phone could direct the power manager to switch to appropriate dynamic voltage and frequency scaling modes that would guarantee minimum levels of desired performance while saving energy consumption and thereby prolonging battery life. Using predictions enables systems to become proactive rather than continue to operate in a reactive manner. This prediction-based proactive approach has become increasingly popular in the design and optimization of integrated …
Automation In Graphic Design, Robert M. Doehling
Automation In Graphic Design, Robert M. Doehling
Honors College Theses
Advances in technology have had dramatic impacts throughout history on a myriad of industries outside of the technology industry itself. These changes are showcased through a brief examination of the changes within the graphic design industry since the recorded birth of the graphic. With the advent of popularized artificial intelligence seen in the modern day, many are predicting the end of graphic design. Through an analysis of current automated design products within the consumer market and a dive into the research alongside design automation professional Peter O’Donovan, it is evident that the role of the graphic designer will most likely …

A Historical Approach To Understanding Explanatory Proofs Based On Mathematical Practices, Erika Oshiro
A Historical Approach To Understanding Explanatory Proofs Based On Mathematical Practices, Erika Oshiro
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation focuses on mathematical explanation found in proofs looked at from a historical point of view, while stressing the importance of mathematical practices. Current philosophical theories on explanatory proofs emphasize the structure and content of proofs without any regard to external factors that influence a proof’s explanatory power. As a result, the major philosophical views have been shown to be inadequate in capturing general aspects of explanation. I argue that, in addition to form and content, a proof’s explanatory power depends on its targeted audience. History is useful here, because from it, we are able to follow the transition …

Place: Anecdote, Theory And Practice, And A Young Princess?, M Punt
Place: Anecdote, Theory And Practice, And A Young Princess?, M Punt
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This article proposes that attention to the place of art and practice facilitates both a subject-to-object and object-to-object consideration of the artwork in a way that draws anecdote, history and theory together into a single perspective. It assumes an expansion of a number of established theoretical frameworks (new historicism, apparatus theory, object-oriented ontology and actor network theory), melding anecdote, theory and arts practice in a thick description of a single academic practice that encompasses theory, history and artworks. This expansion is contained by the consideration of apparatus theory, as it is understood and used in film studies, to the examine …

William Penn, William Petty, And Surveying: The Irish Connection., Marcus Gallo
2019 Faculty Bibliography
William Penn was an instrumental and controversial figure in the early modern transatlantic world, known both as a leader in the movement for religious toleration in England and as a founder of two American colonies, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. As such, his career was marked by controversy and contention in both England and America. This volume looks at William Penn with fresh eyes, bringing together scholars from a range of disciplines to assess his multifaceted life and career. Contributors analyze the worlds that shaped Penn and the worlds that he shaped: Irish, English, American, Quaker, and imperial. The eighteen chapters …
Immanuel Kant: Philosophy Of Perception, John Shannon Hendrix
Immanuel Kant: Philosophy Of Perception, John Shannon Hendrix
Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications
In an early treatise, Attempt to Introduce the Concept of Negative Magnitudes into Philosophy (Versuch, den Begriff der negative Grössen in die Weltweisheit einzuführen, 1763), Immanuel Kant developed a theory about thoughts that are fleeting, negated or cancelled, obscured or darkened. As certain thoughts become clearer, the other thoughts become less clear and more obscured (Verdunkelt). Kant’s concept was influenced by the petites perceptions of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. He invoked Leibniz in establishing that only a small portion of the representations which occur in the soul, as the result of sense perception, are clear and enduring.
The Other Of Jacques Lacan, John Shannon Hendrix
The Other Of Jacques Lacan, John Shannon Hendrix
Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications
Language in the symbolic of Lacan is defined by the Other, which is the “intersubjectivity of the ‘we’ that it assumes,” as described in Écrits. The subject enters language in relationship to the other in perception, the per-ceived object or person, as recognized by the other. As described by Lacan, “What constitutes me as subject is my question. In order to be recognized by the other, I utter what was only in view of what will be [the future ante-rior of what I shall have been for what I am in the process of becoming].”
