Law And History, C. J. Friedrich Oct 1961

Law And History, C. J. Friedrich

Vanderbilt Law Review

Law is frozen history. In an elementary sense, everything we study when we study law is the report of an event in history, and all history consists of such records or reports. It therefore cannot be my task to develop a sermon on the importance of historical records for the understanding of the law; the tie is too intimate and too obvious to need laboring." The work of Professor Maine on 'Ancient Law,'" wrote Professor T. W. Dwight in his Introduction to that book in the sixties of the last century, "is almost the only one in the English language …

The Early History Of Buckingham County, James Meade Anderson Apr 1955

The Early History Of Buckingham County, James Meade Anderson

Master's Theses

This paper is an attempt to bring together unrelated facts concerning the history or Buckingham County, Virginia. lt is sincerely hoped that one may find the way of life of the early settlers and that this brief history can account (1700-1850), will relate the story or typical Americans in their struggle to establish a foundation that time has tested and found solid.

Buckingham County, in the heart of Virginia is one of the most fascinating counties of the Commonwealth. There are three different possibilities from which the county could have received its name. The most prominent idea is that it …

Kennebec Yesterdays, Ernest Cummings Marriner Jan 1954

Kennebec Yesterdays, Ernest Cummings Marriner

Colby Books

A “social history of the Pine Tree State…especially…the Kennebec Valley” inspired by Marriner’s long-running Sunday evening radio program “Little Talks on Common Things,” broadcast by Waterville’s WTVL beginning in 1948.

From the foreword:

To my amazement I found hundreds of people interested in the social history of the Pine Tree State. Material has always poured in faster than I could use it. Out of trunks and boxes stored away in attics, came letters and diaries, account books and legal documents. Scrap books prepared by patient hands many decades ago were opened for my inspection. Yellowed newspapers, tied in neat bundles …

A Historical Study Of The Exploration Of Utah Valley And The Story Of Fort Utah, Ray C. Colton Jan 1946

A Historical Study Of The Exploration Of Utah Valley And The Story Of Fort Utah, Ray C. Colton

Theses and Dissertations

The exploration of Utah Valley and the history of Fort Utah is the story of the conquest and colonization of the American frontier. Discovered in the days of Western expansion, the Valley was identified with the principal factors in the development of the Intermountain West. It heard the chant of the gray robed Franciscan priests, became a favorite haunt of the trail blazing fur trapper and trader, was the site of the ancient rendezvous of the Indian, saw the gold seekers trudge wearily on to California, and with the founding of Fort Utah served as the springboard of Southern Utah …
