The Value Of Hebeler Children's School, Janet Lucille Smith

All Master's Theses

This thesis consists of a historical review of laboratory schools at Central Washington University. It is supplemented by the results of two informal surveys of in-service teachers who graduated from Central, along with present and retired faculty, administrators, teachers, and others connected and concerned with the education of teachers (see Appendices A and B). The surveys focus on the perception of the role of laboratory school experience in teacher preparation. Also included are interviews and correspondence with persons connected to Central and its laboratory schools (see Appendix C). Recommendations were given for opportunity to explore, study and identify the roles …

The Keepers And The Kept: The First Hundred Years Of The Tennessee State Prison System, 1830-1930. (Volumes I And Ii)., Larry D. Gossett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Tennessee built its first state penitentiary in Nashville in 1830 on Sixteenth and Church Streets on land that is now a downtown parking lot. Revisions in the criminal code made many offenses punishable by imprisonment instead of corporal or capital punishment, and the convict population grew steadily. Continuing concern was expressed by the General Assembly that the penitentiary be self-supporting, and much effort was expended at all levels of government to accomplish that end. This study covers the history of approximately the first one hundred years of the Tennessee State Prison System. It begins with an overview of the criminal …

The History And Influence Of Black Baseball In The United States And Indianapolis, Scott Clayton Bower Mar 1991

The History And Influence Of Black Baseball In The United States And Indianapolis, Scott Clayton Bower

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

When Americans discuss the history of baseball, names like Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Connie Mack, and Walter Johnson are mentioned. But what about men like Rube Foster, Buck Leonard, C. I. Taylor, Josh Gibson, and Oscar Charleston? Most American baseball fans know little about black baseball and the lives of black players. A study of black baseball, focusing on the Negro leagues, answers some of the questions baseball fans and historians might ask out of ignorance. How did baseball become segregated? How did the Negro leagues evolve? What was life like for black baseball players? How was the …

The Clan Of Toil: Piney Woods Labor Relations In The Trans-Mississippi South, 1880-1920. (Volumes I-Iii)., John Reed Tarver

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Lumber boomed in the Reconstructed South, an industrial binge that, by 1920, changed the landscape, first removing the forest then replacing its subsistence economy with consumerism. Men with money made fortunes in lumber. West of the Mississippi and south of the Missouri, it became a bonanza by 1880. Within these boundaries, black and white farmers and field hands sought "public work" in sawmills and log fronts. Most were unskilled. Steam power changed their lives, although all did not respond alike. They kept their folk ways, consistent with the new industry, despite their bondage to machines. Although most workers voluntarily entered …

California Pioneers In Speech Pathology: 1915 Through 1951, Looking Back For The Future, Sandra L. Singleton Edd Jan 1990

California Pioneers In Speech Pathology: 1915 Through 1951, Looking Back For The Future, Sandra L. Singleton Edd

Dissertations

Speech pathologists are the only professionals educated and trained to treat human communication disorders. They work in a variety of settings such as schools, hospitals, and private practice. Despite the essential and integrated role speech pathology holds in society, it is continually threatened by internal concerns and external pressures. Regardless of the issues, those who cannot find resolve often call for leadership. When current situations do not yield solutions readily, an historical perspective may serve to provide answers or guidance. Historical documentation was available in detail regarding the foundation of speech pathology in Iowa and Wisconsin, in addition to published …

Building The Meat Packing Industry In South Omaha, 1883-1898, Gail Lorna Didonato Aug 1989

Building The Meat Packing Industry In South Omaha, 1883-1898, Gail Lorna Didonato

Student Work

An article by Gregory R. Zieren was brought to my attention as I was completing this study. I Dealing with recently published works on the packing industry, it critiques books that have been my constant companions over the last two years. Zieren writes, "Despite the local focus [Chicago], none of the works is parochial in its scholarly concerns, and all of them broaden our understanding of the urban and social history of one the nation's quintessential working-class districts." Chicago was the environment for the development of the modern industry and, for almost a century, was the world's leading packing center. …

The Law Of Pretrial Interrogation, Department Of Justice Office Of Legal Policy

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The existing rules in the United States governing the questioning of suspects in custody are based on the Supreme Court's five to four decision in Miranda v. Arizona. The Court in Miranda promulgated a new, code-like set of rules for custodial questioning, including the creation of a right to counsel in connection with custodial questioning, a requirement of warnings, a prohibition of questioning unless the suspect affirmatively waives the rights set out in the warnings, and a prohibition of questioning if the suspect asks for a lawyer or indicates in any manner that he is unwilling to talk. These …

The Sudbury Area To The Great Depression: Regional Development On The Northern Resource Frontier, Peter Vaino Krats Jan 1988

The Sudbury Area To The Great Depression: Regional Development On The Northern Resource Frontier, Peter Vaino Krats

Digitized Theses

An historical study of the Sudbury area of Northern Ontario raises important questions about the interplay of frontier North and settled South. Did progress in the "Nickel Belt" rely on outside-directed staples exploitation, or did local initiative play any part? What sort of society emerged--urban or rural, chaotic or tranquil? Questions such as these guide this thesis, which adopts a narrative coverage of local events from prehistory to the Great Depression. Changes in the resource sectors, administration and society are emphasized, for these best reflect the successive stages of areal development from a Northern "wilderness" to a modern region.;This broad-ranging …

Study Of The Pioneers Of Providence, Utah And Their Children, Hazel Mclean Tibbitts Jan 1988

Study Of The Pioneers Of Providence, Utah And Their Children, Hazel Mclean Tibbitts

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis poses a number of questions about the pioneers and their decendants: Where did the pioneer settlers of Providence come from? What skills and resources did they bring with them to "tame" the wilderness? Did they come as family units or as single men? What happened as the community grew and the resources were limited? Where did the settlers go or what did they do as the land became scarce? Was limited land the reason for the movement out of the community or were there other considerations? What effects did emigration have on the family ties of the second …

This article describes how certain administrative documents written in Venice during the Holy Roman Empire, dubbed relazioni, had a profound effect on the famous historian Leopold von Ranke, and the development of his extremely objective historiography. Von Ranke collected many of these relazioni, and they can be found in the Ranke Library at Syracuse University.

The Ronson Ship: The Study Of An Eighteenth-Century Merchantman Excavated In Manhattan, New York In 1982, Warren Curtis Riess Jan 1987

The Ronson Ship: The Study Of An Eighteenth-Century Merchantman Excavated In Manhattan, New York In 1982, Warren Curtis Riess

Doctoral Dissertations

During a pre-construction archaeological investigation at 175 Water Street, Manhattan, New York in 1982, excavators discovered an eighteenth-century merchant ship. The port side of the ship was excavated and recorded and the bow was taken apart and saved. Since that time historical and archaeological studies have been conducted to interpret the site to glean information about eighteenth-century technology and economics. The remains of this ship are particularly important because no draft or other remains of early eighteenth-century transatlantic merchantmen have been discovered.

The ship appears to be a Virginia-built ship which sailed between the Chesapeake and England or Scotland carrying …

William Walker In Nicaragua: A Critical Review In Light Of Dependency Literature, Patrick N. Sweeney Jun 1986

William Walker In Nicaragua: A Critical Review In Light Of Dependency Literature, Patrick N. Sweeney

Graduate Thesis Collection

William Walker's expedition should be a fertile source of examples of such incipient dependency. This is because that expedition was grounded in the political desires of Manifest Destiny and the pragmatic economics of a cross-isthmus connection between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans during the crucial years just before the U.S. Civil war. Walker's actions caused a war in Central America, brought the United States and England to the brink of war, effected a significant economic relationship, and influenced diplomatic relations between Nicaragua and the U.S. for years afterward. Because of these various actions and reactions, this episode in inter-American relations …

Law, Legalism, And Community Before The American Revolution, Bruce H. Mann Jun 1986

Law, Legalism, And Community Before The American Revolution, Bruce H. Mann

Michigan Law Review

The connections between law and community are difficult to identify, let alone explain. It may be best to begin by seeing how law and the ways people used it changed, and then attempt to relate those changes to the surrounding economy and society. One must, of course, be wary of finding what one looks for. Nonetheless, as with objects against a dark background, it is sometimes easier to see things when they move than when they remain still. To illustrate the interactive nature of legal change and community, I will draw on examples from Connecticut before the Revolution - not …

No Need Of Gold — Alcohol Control Laws And The Alaska Native Population: From The Russians Through The Early Years Of Statehood, Stephen Conn, Antonia Moras Apr 1986

No Need Of Gold — Alcohol Control Laws And The Alaska Native Population: From The Russians Through The Early Years Of Statehood, Stephen Conn, Antonia Moras

Books & monographs

Based on two earlier works by the author — "Alcohol Control in Village Alaska and Town Law" and "Town Law, Village Law" — this history traces the use of legal resources to control alcohol consumption among the Alaska Native population from the period of Russian domination through Alaska statehood in 1959 and makes a detailed examination of alcohol-related issues in Bethel in the decade immediately following statehood.
