The Shanachie (CTIAHS)
In this issue: The 1918 Influeza Pandemic; Think what it must have been like in 1918; War-weary world beset by even more deadly illness; Military camps were breeding places of influenza; Connecticut toll; Plague entered state through seaport of New London; Hopelessly in the grip; School becomes hospital; Shortage of coal, cars, phone operators. Editor's note: This issue of The Shanachie is devoted entirely to recollections of Connecticut in 1918-1919 when Americans dealt with two huge tragedies: World War I and the misnamed “Spanish” Flu Epidemic. They were able to deal with that by declaring and meaning, “we are all …

Reflections On The Evolution Of Smart Polymers, Elizabeth R. Gillies
Reflections On The Evolution Of Smart Polymers, Elizabeth R. Gillies
Bone and Joint Institute
© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim Since Staudinger's recognition that polymers were long chain molecules with covalent bonds between repeating units, the field has evolved tremendously. In addition to their many structural roles, polymers have been developed to exhibit “smart” stimuli-responsive behavior. This article will describe the evolution of selected classes of smart polymers including those responsive to changes in pH, temperature, light, and mechanical stimuli, as well as self-immolative polymers and their application in drug delivery, sensors, and actuators. It will also highlight key advancements in polymer chemistry that enabled rapid progress over the past ∼20 …

Acoustics To Quantum Materials: A Centennial History Of The Department Of Physics, University Of Arkansas, Rajendra Gupta, Paul C. Sharrah
Acoustics To Quantum Materials: A Centennial History Of The Department Of Physics, University Of Arkansas, Rajendra Gupta, Paul C. Sharrah
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The department of physics at the University of Arkansas was established in the 1907-08 academic year, although physics was taught from the very start of the University in 1872. The department celebrated its centennial in 2007-2008. Acoustics to Quantum Materials is a centennial history of the department covering the period 1907-08 to 2007-08. While the emphasis is on this period, instruction of physics over the period 1872-1907 is covered in two prologues, and the period 2009-18 is briefly covered in an epilogue. The first research laboratory to be established was in the area of acoustics. Subsequently, the department’s faculty have …
More Than The Vote: The Nineteenth Amendment As Proxy For Gender Equality, Tracy A. Thomas
More Than The Vote: The Nineteenth Amendment As Proxy For Gender Equality, Tracy A. Thomas
Akron Law Faculty Publications
This essay first details the origins of women's political demand for the vote as part of a comprehensive social reform. It then discusses the four strands of the comprehensive early women's rights agenda for gender equality focused on the political state, domestic family, economic industry, and religious church. Finally, it connects the suffrage activism with demands for an equal rights amendment to realize the full civil rights of equality envisioned by and for women. This long view of women's rights shows it was never only about the vote; rather, the vote stood as a shorthand for a complete revolution of …

Mad: Conservative Mothers And The Political Transformation Of The 1970s In Detroit, Michigan, William A. Taylor
Honors Papers
In 1972, a group of thirteen white mothers founded an educational research organization that would become the Mothers Alert Detroit (MAD). Although primarily known for its role in Detroit's anti-busing movement, MAD was involved in a series of local disputes in the Detroit Public Schools. Through its tenure in the 1970s, MAD opposed efforts to desegregate the public schools, implement sex education courses, reform school textbooks, and increase the mill levy to fund the school system.
I argue that the local political activism of MAD was informed by a conservative gender ideology. Mothers comprised the organization’s leadership and rank-and-file. These …

The Contributions Of Cyrus, Darius I, And Artaxerxes I To The Decree To Restore And Build Jerusalem, P. Gerard Damsteegt
The Contributions Of Cyrus, Darius I, And Artaxerxes I To The Decree To Restore And Build Jerusalem, P. Gerard Damsteegt
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
The question in Daniel 9:25 of who issued the “commandment,” “word,” “decree,” or “command to restore and build Jerusalem,” (NKJV)1 , has occupied Bible scholars for centuries. Three major interpretations have emerged about the decree to rebuild Jerusalem. The first view states that the decree was issued by the Persian King Cyrus the Great (reigned 559-530 BC). The second view was that King Darius I (reigned 522-486 BC) issued the decree. The third view associates the decree with King Artaxerxes I Longimanus (reigned 465-425 BC). Today most scholars hold to the first or second view, the traditional Adventist view supports …

“If God Gives Me Strength, I Shall Be In The Cities”: Ellen G. White, “Outpost Centers,” And Mission Work In Cities, D. J. B. Trim, A. L. Chism
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
In December 1952, the sprawling metropolis of London, Europe’s largest city, was brought to a standstill for five days by an extraordinary conjunction of meteorological event and pollution. Winter fogs were a London commonplace, immortalized in nineteenth- and early twentiethcentury literary works such as Charles Dickens’s novel Bleak House and Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories; but this was the ultimate London fog. For five successive cold December days, a heavy natural fog, the product of winter weather, combined with sulfurous fumes from vehicle exhaust, the smokestacks of factories and power plants, and from the city’s millions of chimneys out of …

Brothers, Sing On: The Story Of Nuance, Kyle Reynolds
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
For this project, I have elected to create a documentary detailing the chronological history of the University of Akron’s all-male contemporary pop a Cappella group, Nuance. The Documentary is titled: “Brothers, Sing On: the Story of Nuance” as a reference to the song “Brothers, Sing On!” by Edvard Grieg, and was named such because of the theme of brotherhood I have showcased in the documentary. I have been a member of Nuance since the Spring Semester of 2018 and have served as the president of the group since Spring Semester 2019. Nuance was founded in 2004, making it one of …
Kim Williams: Professionalizing Domesticity In Montana And Abroad, 1923-1986, Emmett Ball
Kim Williams: Professionalizing Domesticity In Montana And Abroad, 1923-1986, Emmett Ball
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Kim Williams was a renowned writer and naturalist living and working in Missoula, Montana in the 1970s and 80s. She gained national recognition for her regular guest appearances on National Public Radio’s program “All Things Considered,” where she offered home-spun lessons on frugality, naturalism, and happiness through simplicity. Williams’s professionalization of domesticity was the culmination of a lifelong battle in an attempt to reconcile her own personal conception of femininity against her conflicting aspirations for a professional career and a familial, domestic life. There is little scholarship analyzing Williams’s personal life, and no known scholarship has attempted to condense her …
The Eastern Goochland Greenway: Connecting Goochland's Past, Present, And Future, Scott A. Newhart
The Eastern Goochland Greenway: Connecting Goochland's Past, Present, And Future, Scott A. Newhart
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects
The Eastern Goochland Greenway Plan proposes a shared-use trail that is nested within the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) conceptualization of a statewide trail system called the James River Heritage Trail (JRHT). The JRHT includes shared use bicycle and pedestrian facilities as well as water trail access points that would connect pre-existing trail systems to new proposed trails that are parallel with and in close proximity to Virginia’s James River corridor and all of the natural, cultural, and historic resource opportunities that the surrounding areas offer. Specifically, the Eastern Goochland Greenway aims to serve two major purposes; to …

The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the United States. The El Paso Women’s History Coloring Book Volume II celebrates this anniversary and women’s achievements, while also acknowledging that much work still remains to be done regarding women’s and voting rights.
This new bilingual (Spanish and English) coloring book builds upon the El Paso Women’s History Coloring Book, published in March 1991. The original coloring book was created by Eva Ross, a retired teacher and former Equity Program Specialist of the Ysleta Independent School District. This second volume was developed as a free educational resource. …

Rebuilding The Texas Railroad Commission, James W. Coleman
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
This article explains how the Railroad Commission of Texas became the world’s most prominent oil and gas regulator and how it can become the world’s role model again. It explains how the Railroad Commission built the world’s modern oil and gas industry by stopping oil and gas waste and ensuring stable prices. And it describes the crisis now facing the industry—overproduction of oil and gas is wasting resources that will be worth more in the future. The United States is emerging from the biggest oil and gas boom that the world has ever seen and its production now dwarfs that …

Islam, the religion of 1.2 billion people around the world, provides its followers guidance on how to live according to God’s teachings. The word “Islam” means submission, and in this context, refers to voluntary submission to will and teachings of God. The word Islam stems from the same root word as “peace” salām, by submitting to God one finds inner peace in this world and eternal peace and happiness in the next.
Gulf Coast Marine Laboratories Past, Present And Future, Donald F. Boesch
Gulf Coast Marine Laboratories Past, Present And Future, Donald F. Boesch
Gulf and Caribbean Research
I spent my nearly 50—year career in marine science working at marine laboratories, most of that as a chief executive officer. So, it is appropriate that my reflections are about marine laboratories, rather than my own science. After relating my career course, I turn my attention to the history and development of marine laboratories along the U.S. coast of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). Surprisingly, the region’s first laboratory was actually constructed in 1903 at Cameron, LA, but operated less than a decade before closing. It was not until after World War II that the university—affiliated marine laboratories of today …
