A History Of The Danville Military Institute, Robert Erle Edwards Jul 1959

A History Of The Danville Military Institute, Robert Erle Edwards

Master's Theses

As the years roll by, primary sources of historical data are either lost or destroyed. This unfortunate fact has held true in the case of the Danville Military Institute. A number of good pieces of original data have disappeared since the school closed. In order to take advantage of available material before it is lost, this study of the Danville Military Institute was made. This is the first intensive study of the school, which was a credit to its city, its state, and its nation.

Mao Tse-Tung And I Were Beggars, Yu Siao Jan 1959

Mao Tse-Tung And I Were Beggars, Yu Siao

Books

This book was written neither in admiration of a hero nor in condemnation of a bandit. I had neither object in view. Moreover, to my mind, the line of demarcation between the bandit and the hero is at times faint. No, in the following pages I have attempted merely to set down an accurate record of certain episodes in my life selected from the storehouse of memory as of certain interest to the public at large and in connection with current events in the Far East. More important than this, I feel it my duty, not only towards my own …

Middle East In Crisis : A Historical And Documentary Review, Carol A. Fisher, Fred Krinsky Jan 1959

Middle East In Crisis : A Historical And Documentary Review, Carol A. Fisher, Fred Krinsky

Syracuse University Press Publications

This book had its inception in a common teaching experience. Although it is now almost two years since we were first involved in the preparation of materials on the Middle East for a course in the problems of American democracy, world events continue to remind us of the critical importance of the Mediterranean area. Our students were aware of an increasing variety of proposals for the role the United States should play in easing the tensions in the Middle East, but they were relatively unfamiliar with the general history and geography of the area. Thus they were unable to evaluate …

An Historical Study Of The Pole Vault, Ray Frederick Kring Jan 1959

An Historical Study Of The Pole Vault, Ray Frederick Kring

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The pole vault is an event performed in track and field athletics wherein the athlete, with the aid of a pole 14 and 15 feet in length, attempts to clear a crossbar resting on two pegs supported by two standards. The standards, or uprights, are placed not less than 12 feet nor more than 13 feet apart. The vaulter cushions his fall in a pit filled with shavings. The object of the event is to vault higher than your competitors.

The purpose of this study is to trace the progress made in the pole vault since man first learned to …

A Historical Study Of The Congressional Career, John T. Caine, Judith Ann Roderick

Theses and Dissertations

John T. Caine, an adept leader in the national and local political arena, was one of the best known and most highly respected men in Utah during the territorial era. Very early in his life he assumed an active role in politics and became one of the early leaders of the Democratic Party in Utah. From the time of his initial election in 1882 as the territorial delegate until his retirement in 1893, he labored in behalf of his constituents. No task proved to be too tiresome or laborious; industry, honesty, and sober self-reliance were personal characteristics of the man …

A Survey Of The Attention Given To Population Problems By Physical And Social Science Societies, Morton K. Ohlson Sep 1958

A Survey Of The Attention Given To Population Problems By Physical And Social Science Societies, Morton K. Ohlson

Economics ETDs

It is the purpose of this thesis to examine the publications of leading physical and social science societies 1946 through 1956 with a view to finding out the degree of importance that they attach to the world's present rate of population growth. As a result of this examination of scientific literature it is the thesis of this paper that the overwhelming majority of social and physical scientists believe that the present rate of growth of the world's population is one of the most contemporary problems. The attention given has been uneven among the scientific societies. Some have devoted an adequate …

A History Of Syracuse, Nebraska, Aileen Lowson Williams Aug 1958

A History Of Syracuse, Nebraska, Aileen Lowson Williams

Student Work

A century ago settlement was just beginning to flourish in Nebraska. One by one communities were appearing on the prairie---Nebraska City, Omaha, and Lincoln, to name only a few. Among these early communities were some which grew and developed, while others died after a few short years leaving little to serve as a monument. Many towns which survived did not attain the goals envisioned by their founders, but remained relatively small agricultural settlements. Syracuse, Nebraska, is such a community. The events which occurred in this community's past have often been told but seldom recorded. yet Syracuse has a story to …
