A Book From The Library Of Christoph Scheurl (1481-1542), Gail P. Hueting Apr 1988

A Book From The Library Of Christoph Scheurl (1481-1542), Gail P. Hueting

The Courier

This article examines a book written in 1530 by the German jurist and humanist Christoph Scheurl, a book which now resides in the Syracuse University Special Collections. The book is actually an amalgamation of nine total works, ranging in diverse topics such as royal weddings, wars (Italy and Spain in particular), genealogy, health, and theology. Originally in favor of Martin Luther's reforms, Scheurl remained a Catholic after the Church's division, and one of the works argues against Luther's views.

William Courtenay's England : An Aristocratic Bishop In The Fourteenth Century, Michael P. Gwaltney Apr 1988

William Courtenay's England : An Aristocratic Bishop In The Fourteenth Century, Michael P. Gwaltney

Honors Theses

Despite religious controversy that threatened the church and

endangered the state, William Courtenay, as an aristocratic bishop,

succeeded in preserving the traditional structure of the medieval

English Church. During the second half of the fourtheenth century,

England sustained reversals abroad in the renewed war with France.

The military setbacks aggrevated the domestic unrest, which existed

under the uncertain leadership of senile Edward III and then young

Richard II. Church and state in medieval society were so closely

interwoven by means of a cohesive religion that "any substantial

alteration of the church system could have led to a revolution of a …

The Twentieth-Century Revolution In Family Wealth Transmission, John H. Langbein Feb 1988

The Twentieth-Century Revolution In Family Wealth Transmission, John H. Langbein

Michigan Law Review

The main purpose of this article is to sound a pair of themes about the ways in which these great changes in the nature of wealth have become associated with changes of perhaps comparable magnitude in the timing and in the character of family wealth transmission. My first theme, developed in Part II, concerns human capital. Whereas of old, wealth transmission from parents to children tended to center upon major items of patrimony such as the family farm or the family firm, today for the broad middle classes, wealth transmission centers on a radically different kind of asset: the investment …

An Historical, Theoretical And Empirical Analysis Of Direct Foreign Investment In The United States During The Twentieth Century, Steven Louis Widener Jan 1988

An Historical, Theoretical And Empirical Analysis Of Direct Foreign Investment In The United States During The Twentieth Century, Steven Louis Widener

Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis employs both aggregate data and a dissaggregated sample of 135 non-U.S. multinational enterprises to analyze the extent of direct foreign investment (DFI) in United States manufacturing since 1900, its characteristics and causes. This research revealed that: (1) DFI originates primarily from other developed capitalist countries, (2) most DFI is relatively recent, accelerating markedly after 1970, (3) from the perspective of relative interpenetration of DFI, U.S. imperial power versus its major trading rivals has waned since 1970, (4) there is a strong tendency for the parent firm to penetrate the market through acquisitions of existing U.S. firms, and (5) …

Yilgarn: Good Country For Hardy People: The Landscape And People Of The Yilgarn Shire, Western Australia, Lyall Hunt (Ed.) Jan 1988

Yilgarn: Good Country For Hardy People: The Landscape And People Of The Yilgarn Shire, Western Australia, Lyall Hunt (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

This study of the environment and people of the Yilgarn region of Western Australia grew from a decision of the Shire of Yilgarn to commemorate the centenary of the discovery of commercial deposits of gold in the district in 1887-1888. The idea stemmed from the vision of Mr Romolo Patroni who saw the need to record the experiences of Yilgarn pioneers. He convinced the shire council under Cr Kenneth Beaton, president, 1972-1982, to publish a history of the district. The plan was fostered by Cr John Panizza, who became shire president in 1982 and brought to fruition by Cr Patroni …

History Of Jews At Oberlin College: A Mirror Of Change, Andrea R. Meyer Jan 1988

History Of Jews At Oberlin College: A Mirror Of Change, Andrea R. Meyer

Honors Papers

In searching for the first Jewish student at Oberlin College, I discovered and subsequently researched the life of, 1920 graduate Marion Benjamin Roth who started the Oberlin branch of the Menorah Society, a Jewish literary and cultural group. Mrs. Roth, whom I interviewed, started the group because she was concerned about the environment for Jewish students. In letters to Rabbi Wolsey in Cleveland she discussed her perceptions of life for Jewish students at Oberlin soon after her arrival.

Marion Benjamin later reflected that Jewish students needed to have "some place that they could get together if they wanted; to discuss …

Aids: An Overview, Loretta Mclaughlin Jan 1988

Aids: An Overview, Loretta Mclaughlin

New England Journal of Public Policy

"We stand nakedly in front of a very serious pandemic, as mortal as any pandemic there ever has been," said Halfdan Mahler, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO). "I don't know of any greater killer than AIDS, not to speak of its psychological, social and economic maiming. Everything is getting worse and worse with AIDS and all of us have been underestimating it, and I in particular. We're running scared. I cannot imagine a worse health problem in this century." When asked to compare AIDS to other epidemics, such as smallpox, that have infected and killed over the course …

Academic Freedom And Academic Values In Sponsored Research, Rebecca S. Eisenberg Jan 1988

Academic Freedom And Academic Values In Sponsored Research, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Articles

In this Article I examine the traditional American conception of academic freedom and analyze its implications for universities formulating policies on the acceptance of sponsored research. I begin by reviewing the basic policy statements of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) on academic freedom to identify both the academic values implicit in those statements and the assumptions about institutional relationships and individual incentives underlying their prescriptions for advancing those values. I then evaluate the validity of those underlying assumptions in contemporary sponsored research and argue that academic freedom as traditionally conceived might no longer effectively advance academic values in …

The Fire-Eaters, The South, And Secession. (Volumes I And Ii)., Eric Harry Walther Jan 1988

The Fire-Eaters, The South, And Secession. (Volumes I And Ii)., Eric Harry Walther

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study is a collective biography of nine prominent secessionists: Nathaniel Beverley Tucker, William Lowndes Yancey, John A. Quitman, Robert Barnwell Rhett, Laurence M. Keitt, Louis T. Wigfall, James D. B. DeBow, Edmund Ruffin, and William Porcher Miles. It explores both the variety of personalities drawn to the secession movement and what motivated them to advocate the creation of a Southern Confederacy. By examining individuals, each chapter dramatizes a particular aspect of southern radicalism. Although the chronological focus is on the secession crisis and the decade preceding the Civil War, the scope of this study includes the entire nineteenth century. …
