A Community Study Of Coalville, Utah, 1859-1914, Norma Eileen Pyper Thompson
A Community Study Of Coalville, Utah, 1859-1914, Norma Eileen Pyper Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is about a small Mormon community, Coalville, Utah, during the time period 1859 to 1914. Coalville is located in the northeastern section of the state of Utah in Summit County on Interstate 80.
Although Coalville remained small in population, it is worthwhile to study its origins, the people who built its institutions, its social life and economy and how it developed from a mere camping spot on the road between Salt Lake to Wyoming into a stable community. Coalville's development was significant to the growth and culture of Utah.
The founders experienced the usual pioneer struggles to conquer …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
During the Great Depression artists working in programs funded by the federal government roamed the nation wielding brushes, jotting notes, and pointing cameras in an attempt to define and characterize American society. Never before and not since has this country conducted so intensive a survey of itself, or one so controversial. Federal patronage of the arts occurred during an anxious period of political and cultural turmoil, a turmoil inherent in the story of the Arts Projects themselves. The very structure, organization, composition, execution, and objectives of the arts agencies mirror the tensions of the age. The artists' selection or avoidance …

The Supreme Court In Politics., Terrance Sandalow
Reviews
Despite all that has been written about the bitter struggle initiated by President Reagan's nomination of Robert Bork to a seat on the Supreme Court, its most remarkable feature, that it was waged over a judicial appointment, has drawn relatively little comment. Two hundred years after the Philadelphia Convention, Hamilton's "least dangerous" branch - least dangerous because it would have "no influence over either the sword or the purse, no direction either of the strength or the wealth of the society, and can take no active resolution whatever"'-had come to occupy so important a place in the nation's political life …

Keeping The Faith: Douglas Southall Freeman, 1886-1953. (Volumes I And Ii)., John R. Peacock Iii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This is a study of the life and career of Douglas Southall Freeman (1886-1953), whose careful scheduling of every minute of every day allowed him to pursue two full-time careers--one as a historian and one as editor of a major daily newspaper. In both occupations his views were shaped by the traditional values he acquired in this youth--religious conviction, reverence for heroes, devotion to duty, self-control, fortitude, industry, thrift. Growing up in Virginia during the era of the Confederate celebration, Freeman came to admire one hero above all others--Robert E. Lee, a man whose character best exemplified his own moral …

California Pioneers In Speech Pathology: 1915 Through 1951, Looking Back For The Future, Sandra L. Singleton Edd
Dissertations
Speech pathologists are the only professionals educated and trained to treat human communication disorders. They work in a variety of settings such as schools, hospitals, and private practice. Despite the essential and integrated role speech pathology holds in society, it is continually threatened by internal concerns and external pressures. Regardless of the issues, those who cannot find resolve often call for leadership. When current situations do not yield solutions readily, an historical perspective may serve to provide answers or guidance. Historical documentation was available in detail regarding the foundation of speech pathology in Iowa and Wisconsin, in addition to published …

Vincentian Missions Among Native Americans, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
The founders of the American Vincentians, Felix De Andreis and Joseph Rosati, considered the conversion of the Native Americans one of the main purposes of the American mission, although this was not an official objective. Efforts to this end were relatively few due to a lack of personnel and resources, and the more urgent need to serve American Catholics. In 1824, while ministering to Catholics in the Arkansas Territory, John Mary Odin and John Timon said mass among the Kappas-on-Arkansas (Quapaw). In 1837, other Vincentians went to the Osages in what is now Oklahoma. These two ventures were considered major …

Student Work
An article by Gregory R. Zieren was brought to my attention as I was completing this study. I Dealing with recently published works on the packing industry, it critiques books that have been my constant companions over the last two years. Zieren writes, "Despite the local focus [Chicago], none of the works is parochial in its scholarly concerns, and all of them broaden our understanding of the urban and social history of one the nation's quintessential working-class districts." Chicago was the environment for the development of the modern industry and, for almost a century, was the world's leading packing center. …

Boundaries and Water: Allocation and Use of a Shared Resource (Summer Conference, June 5-7)
Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors David H. Getches, Lawrence J. MacDonnell and Charles F. Wilkinson.
Boundaries and Water: Allocation and Use of a Shared Resource is the topic of the Center's annual summer program on water this June. Most of the major rivers in the western United States are shared between two or more states. Often tribal governments play an important role in water allocation and use decisions. International considerations also may be involved in some cases. These interjurisdictional issues extend to groundwater as well as surface water.
This conference will provide the …

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries most Indian reform groups were church-centered and were run by whites who had long been involved in the formulation of Indian policy. These people, whom one historian has labeled "old campaigners," thought of themselves as the "Friends of the Indian," and their individual interests focused on specific facets of national Indian policy. Founded in 1879, the Boston Indian Citizenship Committee sought political advancement for Indians. In 1882, the Indian Rights Association emerged to protect Indians1 legal rights. A year later, the Women’s National Indian Association was founded to build missions and promote …
