Reservation Leadership And The Progressive-Traditional Dichotomy: William Wash And The Northern Utes, 1865-1928, Davis Rich Lewis
History Faculty Publications
In the early twentieth century, Indian Bureau officials noted an increasing incidence of tribal factionalism parallel to changes in Indian reservation leadership. They described this factionalism in terms of a progressive-traditional dichotomy. Modern scholars have unintentionally fallen into this semantic trap. This article explores the complexity of individual motivations and factional politics among the Northern Utes through the life of William Wash and suggests that such cultural middlemen offer a more complete picture of reservation politics.

The Special Artist In American Culture: A Biography Of Frank Hamilton Taylor (1846-1927), Nancy Louise Gustke
The Special Artist In American Culture: A Biography Of Frank Hamilton Taylor (1846-1927), Nancy Louise Gustke
Doctoral Dissertations
As a Special Artist (newspaper illustrator) for papers such as the New York Daily Graphic and Harper's Weekly, author and illustrator of numerous guidebooks, and astute recorder of Philadelphia, Frank Hamilton Taylor left a unique visual and written record of late nineteenth, early twentieth century American life. His work provided the growing, increasingly literate urban middle class with information about their country from the excitement of the Centennial Exposition to the tragedy of lives lost at sea. In addition, Taylor's documentation of leisure pursuits, particularly in the Thousand Islands area of New York, helped define what constituted recreation for the …

The National Conference of the Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL) is a legislature in every way but one. It drafts uniform acts, debates them, passes them, and promulgates them, but that passage and promulgation do not make these uniform acts law over any citizen of any state. These acts become the law of the various states only ex proprio vigore - only if their own vitality influences the legislators of the various states to pass them.

Review Of Cardozo: A Study In Reputation, By R. Posner, Richard D. Friedman
Review Of Cardozo: A Study In Reputation, By R. Posner, Richard D. Friedman
Reviews
Judge Richard Posner has written a genial book about one of our greatest judicial icons, Benjamin N. Cardozo.1 He seeks not only to assess the merits of Cardozo's writings, both on and off the bench, but also to measure, and determine the causes of, Cardozo's reputation. The book is an outgrowth of a lecture series,2 and it reveals its origins in at least two ways. First, the book attempts to reach a mixed audience, composed of both lawyers and laypeople, and in this aspect it is very successful. Nonlawyers, I believe, will have little difficulty following Judge Posner's essential arguments, …
Reformers' Regress: The 1991 Texas Workers' Compensation Act., Jill Williford
Reformers' Regress: The 1991 Texas Workers' Compensation Act., Jill Williford
St. Mary's Law Journal
The revision of the Texas Workers’ Compensation Act will affect most Texas taxpayers and workers. The Act, entering into force January 1, 1991, significantly restructures the preexisting seventy-six-year-old system. Before the advent of workers’ compensation systems employees relied on the court and common-law causes of action as the sole means of recovery. In 1913, Texas enacted one of the first versions of workers’ compensation in the United States. The original act created a system to compensate workers for injuries sustained during employment without regard to fault. Initially the act was elective for employers and mandatory for employees but was later …
Changing Eyes: American Culture And The Photographic Image, 1918-1941., Melissa A. Mceuen
Changing Eyes: American Culture And The Photographic Image, 1918-1941., Melissa A. Mceuen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
From 1918 to 1941, fast-paced changes and far-reaching crises occurred in all realms of American life--social, economic, political, cultural, and intellectual. Evidence of the culture's preoccupations showed up not only in written, but also in visual sources. Photographs helped to reveal the values of American culture, and did so with increasing frequency as the photographic process was further improved. Each visual image bore the marks of its culture, yet none provided a completely objective look at reality. For every picture was the product of the personality standing behind the camera. This study examines both the lives and the photographs of …
