United States V. Nixon, Twenty Years After: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly--An Exploration Of Executive Privilege, K. A. Mcneely-Johnson
United States V. Nixon, Twenty Years After: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly--An Exploration Of Executive Privilege, K. A. Mcneely-Johnson
Northern Illinois University Law Review
The following article attempts to conceptualize United States v. Nixon and the strengthened doctrine of Executive Privilege it beget. This is accomplished through the examination of Executive Privilege's historic roots, the events surrounding the Nixon case, the hallmark ruling itself, the shadowy impact upon subsequent administrations, and the tension of secrecy and accountability necessitated by the doctrine. Finally, it concludes with alternatives that would minimize the dangerous potential that exists under the current permutation of the doctrine.

Nothing Lasts Forever: Toward A Coherent Theory In American Preservation Law, Kathryn R.L. Rand
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Part I of this Note examines Grégoire's liberty-based theory of preservation and discusses the three rationales that underlie his theory. Part II examines the development of preservation law in the United States, following it through three stages: patriotic inspiration, aesthetic merit, and community. Part III examines Italy's experience with preservation in order to identify and discuss several problems inherent in preservation law. Part IV suggests preservation rationales for courts and legislators to consider and identifies problems for them to avoid.
Elizabeth Seton: Her World And Her Church, Judith Metz S.C.
Elizabeth Seton: Her World And Her Church, Judith Metz S.C.
Vincentian Studies
The first part of this article gives the political, social, economic, and religious context of the world in which Elizabeth Seton lived. The second part describes the establishment and work of the Sisters of Charity. Education for all was important to early Americans, largely because everyone was supposed to read the Bible. Women had more agency than their European counterparts, although their influence was still mostly confined to the home. They were charged with instilling morality in children, and through them, in society in general. This was reflected in the curriculum of Elizabeth Seton’s school, Saint Joseph’s Academy. The outlook …
The Woman Elizabeth Bayley Seton, 1793–1803, Marilyn Thei S.C.
The Woman Elizabeth Bayley Seton, 1793–1803, Marilyn Thei S.C.
Vincentian Studies
Marilyn Thei’s highly detailed article examines Elizabeth Seton “within the context of her world, amidst life in late eighteenth-century New York City as experienced by women of her class, race, and age.” Thei uses the writing of Elizabeth and her peers as well as sources of feminist scholarship to do this. Elizabeth’s life is often contrasted with lives of women from other races and classes. The topics covered include the extent of Elizabeth’s engagement with the world of fashion and entertainment, the nature of her relationships with her husband and with her dearest friend, her experience of motherhood, her role …

Education And Community Development Among Nineteenth-Century Irish And Contemporary Cambodians In Lowell, Massachusetts, Peter N. Kiang
Education And Community Development Among Nineteenth-Century Irish And Contemporary Cambodians In Lowell, Massachusetts, Peter N. Kiang
New England Journal of Public Policy
As cities undergo dramatic demographic changes, schools become important sites of conflict between the interests of established and emerging communities. This article presents a case study of Lowell, Massachusetts, where the second largest Irish community in the country resided during the 1850s, and which is now home to the second largest Cambodian community in the United States. Analysis of nineteenth-century Irish community dynamics, particularly in relation to issues of public education in Lowell, reveals the significance of religious institutions and middle-class entrepreneurs in the process of immigrant community development and highlights important relationships to ethnicity, electoral politics, and economic development. …
