Early Life History Of Yellow Perch In Eastern South Dakota Lakes, Shannon Fisher
Early Life History Of Yellow Perch In Eastern South Dakota Lakes, Shannon Fisher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Yellow perch Perea flavescens are a popular South Dakota sportfish; however, inconsistent recruitment creates highly variable and unpredictable perch fishery quality. Before fishery managers can begin to develop and assess strategies to stabilize yellow perch recruitment, a better understanding of their early life history is required. I selected two natural lakes with differing yellow perch population types and monitored brood stock, spawning habits, and larval and juvenile life history patterns during 1995 and 1996. Pelican Lake was selected as a representative yellow perch population exhibiting inconsistent recruitment and Pickerel Lake as a population with relatively consistent recruitment. Yellow perch tended …

Virginia Celebrates The Yorktown Centennial Of 1881, Julie Anne Sweet-Mcginty
Virginia Celebrates The Yorktown Centennial Of 1881, Julie Anne Sweet-Mcginty
Master's Theses
This study chronicles the planning, execution, and aftermath of the Yorktown Centennial of October 1881 in Yorktown, Richmond, and Norfolk. Beyond its original expectation of memorializing the one hundredth anniversary of the last major battle for independence, as the first nationally prominent celebration to occur on Southern soil after the Civil War, it made reconciliation among the states a significant aspect of the occasion. Also, it marked the first national gathering after the assassination of President James A. Garfield as well as the occasion for the first public speech given by the new President, Chester A. Arthur. The presence of …

Public Research And Private Development: Patents And Technology Transfer In Government-Sponsored Research, Rebecca S. Eisenberg
Articles
This article revisits the logical and empirical basis for current government patent policy in order to shed light on the competing interests at stake and to begin to assess how the system is operating in practice. Such an inquiry is justified in part by the significance of federally-sponsored research and development to the overall U.S. research effort. Although the share of national expenditures for research and development borne by the federal government has declined since 1980, federal funding in 1995 still accounted for approximately thirty-six percent of total national outlays for research and development' and nearly fifty-eight percent of outlays …
"Only A Girl": Christine Frederick, Efficiency, Consumerism, And Women's Sphere., Janice Williams Rutherford
"Only A Girl": Christine Frederick, Efficiency, Consumerism, And Women's Sphere., Janice Williams Rutherford
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Christine Frederick was a home efficiency expert who worked out of her home experiment station, Applecroft, in Greenlawn, New York, from 1910 to 1939. She advocated the application of scientific management, technology, and consumer awareness to homemaking. Frederick came of age during a time when feminism was opening a window of opportunity for middle-class, educated, white women. By the time she graduated from Northwestern University, the nineteenth-century doctrine of separate spheres was being challenged. Charlotte Perkins Gilman's critique of the single-family home had been published, the woman suffrage campaign would gain new momentum within the next few years, and women …

Under Blue Skies : The Social Construction Of Intellectual Disability In Western Australia, Errol Cocks (Ed.)
Under Blue Skies : The Social Construction Of Intellectual Disability In Western Australia, Errol Cocks (Ed.)
Research outputs pre 2011
Research into the history of people with intellectual disabilities in Western Australia has been a sporadic undertaking. Scholarship to date has been mainly institutional in character and often undertaken as an adjunct to the study of mental illness. The people themselves have remained mostly invisible. In 1989, the Editors conceived of a social history research project in which, for the first time, an attempt would be made to document the lives of people with intellectual disabilities in Western Australia The project would also aim to describe the institutional, social, political and professional history we identify with mainstream historical scholarship...

The Voice Of Edith Cowan: Australia's First Woman Parliamentarian 1921-1924, Harry C.J. Phillips
Research outputs pre 2011
On 12 March 1996 the Honourable Justice French, as Chancellor of Edith Cowan University, led a rededication ceremony of the Edith Cowan Clock Tower. This occasion, the seventy-fifth anniversary of Edith Cowan's election to the Legislative Assembly, was immediately followed by a breakfast at the nearby Parliament of Western Australia. During the evening a touring exhibition of Edith Cowan's life was launched titled "A Tough Nut to Crack". Then five days later Professor Geoffrey Bolton spoke at St George's Cathedral to celebrate a "Life of Service" by Edith Cowan.
The Voice of Edith Cowan is another contribution to the anniversary. …
Poverty And Social Control In Early Modern England: Exeter, 1558-1625., Connie S. Evans
Poverty And Social Control In Early Modern England: Exeter, 1558-1625., Connie S. Evans
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Poverty has always been, and continues to be, one of the most pressing social problems, and one to which a number of solutions have been proposed through the ages. The present work is an examination of the problem and the responses to it in early modern England, and is set in the local context of the city of Exeter. Prior to the reign of Elizabeth I, the majority of poor law legislation was punitive in nature. rather than rehabilitative. That the nature of poor law legislation changed under Elizabeth was due to a number of factors, not least of which …

The Development Of Community Mental Health Nursing Services In Western Australia : A History (1950-1995) And Population Profile, Phillip M. Maude
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This descriptive• study discusses the development of community mental health (CMH) in Western Australia (WA) and describes the current practising population of CMH nurses. The study explores literature pertaining to the emergence of the CMH movement and the deinstitutionalisation of the mentally ill. A conceptual framework was developed by adapting Lewin's change theory. CMH nurses practising in WA (n= 130), were invited to participate in the study and were asked to complete a survey questionnaire. This resulted in a 66% response rate (n = 86). Quantitative data was analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Open ended …
