The New Zealand Jury, Neil Cameron, Susan Potter, Warren Young
Law and Contemporary Problems
In New Zealand, the recent history of the jury has been one of fairly steady decline. This is particularly so of the civil jury, which has become virtually extinct with little realistic prospect of revival.

Historians And John C. Calhoun: One Hundred And Fifty Years Of Historiography, John Gregory Jacobsen
Historians And John C. Calhoun: One Hundred And Fifty Years Of Historiography, John Gregory Jacobsen
Student Work
In a public career spanning forty years, South Carolinian John C. Calhoun served in a variety of offices from state legislator to United States vice president. A central antebellum figure, he presents something of an enigma. Historically, Calhoun has been identified with the South and slavery, both of which he defended vigorously. Yet his significant, if challenging, contributions to American political and constitutional thought have proven to be his most enduring legacy. In the century and a half since his death, he has been the focus of a vast number of historical works ranging from multi-volume biographies to narrowly-focused interpretive …

Re-Inventing American Childhood: How Did The Nineteenth Century Heart Of The Home Become The Twentieth Century Child Of The State?, Judith Sealander
Re-Inventing American Childhood: How Did The Nineteenth Century Heart Of The Home Become The Twentieth Century Child Of The State?, Judith Sealander
ICS Fellow Lectures
Professor Sealander outlines the major subject of 1 her current book-in-progress: state efforts to regulate children's work, education, health, and welfare. She demonstrates how a byzantine welter of laws and policies transformed the attitudes about children that Americans were supposed to support. Asking ''What have been the consequences of a twentieth century public reinvention of childhood," she suggests that by end of the twentieth century, coming of age had become a public ritual. It was and is one frequently in conflict with an earlier nineteenth century rhetoric that • glorified families, increased the responsibilities of mothers, and sentimentalized children as …

A Profile Of Virginia Businesswomen During The Civil War Era, Robyn Mundy
A Profile Of Virginia Businesswomen During The Civil War Era, Robyn Mundy
Master's Theses
This thesis examines the role of white Virginia businesswomen during the Civil War era, focusing on the three specific communities of Norfolk, Lynchburg, and Staunton. The primary questions addressed are: who were these women; why did they own their own businesses; and how successful were they? After searching the available business directories for each city, the R. G. Dun & Company credit ledgers provide descriptions of business owners, including some of these women, which, along with the manuscript census, give a socio-economic profile of Virginia businesswomen. After the conflict, the numbers of businesswomen increased and the firms they owned became …
Uncertain Identities : Aristocratic Women Of English Renaissance Drama, Kimberly Ann Turner
Uncertain Identities : Aristocratic Women Of English Renaissance Drama, Kimberly Ann Turner
Master's Theses
Often, women stand out as being some of the most interesting and ambiguous characters in English drama. In this study, I examine moments in five Renaissance plays in which female characters reject the extreme dichotomies that were used by society to describe women. In the first portion of the paper, I look at the ways in which malcontents are similar to unconventional female characters in that they both challenge existing patriarchal structures. Secondly, I explore the characters of Mellida, Sophonisba, and Desdemona who begin to assert their own desires, while at the same time, they continue to embody more traditional …
