Christian Missions And Colonial Empires Reconsidered: A Black Evangelist In West Africa, 1766-1816, Edward E. Andrews
History & Classics Faculty Publications
The article presents an exploration into the work of the late 18th-century West African Anglican missionary Philip Quaque and the relationship between imperialism and religion during the colonial era. The author points out and criticizes the dominant historiographical trend of over-conflating White imperialism with Christian missions. Quaque's life and writings are examined, highlighting the lack of forced cultural conversion within his missionary activities. Discussion is also given regarding the complex identity dynamics within Quaque as a Christian and as an African.

From Mueller To Miller: Determining Standards For Decisions Regarding Critically Ill Newborns, Tanaz Farzan Danialifar
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
FROM MUELLER TO MILLER: DETERMINING STANDARDS FOR DECISIONS REGARDING CRITICALLY ILL NEWBORNS. Tanaz Farzan Danialifar (Sponsored by Geoffrey Miller). Section of Neurology, Department of Pediatrics, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. The controversy surrounding selective nontreatment of critically ill newborns has been ongoing for over three decades. Since ancient times ill, premature, or deformed infants have been treated discriminatorily, and infanticide has been a historically acceptable practice. With medical, moral, and legal progress, infanticide has disappeared and been replaced with selective nontreatment. This raises new ethical concerns such as best interests, quality of life, wrongful life, and parental …

Spatial Reconfigurations: Bodily Terrains And Their Suppression On The New York Waterfront: The Greenwich Village Piers 40-53 1936-1998, Mark Curley
Masters
There has been seismic change on the New York waterfront since World War II. The shipping industry of longshoremen on the rough docks, has given way to mothers with babies in a bucolic landscape. The former condition existed within Kristeva's theories of abjection (1982), and today we have a suppression of that abjection through the municipal authority of the Hudson River Park Act (1998). This control of space is integral to gentrification. The abject condition existed as a changing zone of spatial occupiers and colonies, who demarcated their territories as bodily terrains on the edge of the city. Due to …
Renewable Energy In Rural Alaska: Two Case Studies And Their Implications, Jesse L. Logan
Renewable Energy In Rural Alaska: Two Case Studies And Their Implications, Jesse L. Logan
Arctic and Northern Studies
"This thesis argues that the costs of electricity in rural Alaska are ecological, economic, and social, and asks whether or not renewable energy can reduce these costs. Two case studies are examined: a wind-diesel hybrid system in Kotzebue, Alaska, and an Organic Rankine cycle geothermal system in Chena Hot Springs, Alaska. In both cases it is found that when compared to the status quo (fossil fuel generated electricity), renewable energy technologies have reduced these costs. Historically, the funding for energy projects in Alaska has shifted from private enterprise investment to state and federal support. This is important in the debate …

THE RISE OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE IN THE SIXTIES: PAVING A NEW ENTRANCE TO THE HOUSE OF MEDICINE. Anne K. Merritt (Sponsored by John H. Warner). Section of the History of Medicine, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. This thesis investigates how emergency medicine evolved in the United States in the 1960s. Three case studies, Alexandria Hospital, Hartford Hospital, and Yale-New Haven Hospital, demonstrate the changes in emergency medicine at a small community hospital, a mid-sized teaching hospital, and an urban academic institution, respectively. The government, the media, the American public, and the medical community brought emergency medical care …
Can A Nazi Be A Hero?, Emily Paras
Can A Nazi Be A Hero?, Emily Paras
Constructing the Past
This paper centers on John Rabe, a German businessman and Nazi, who, according to several historians, helped save roughly 250,000 lives during the Rape of Nanking. He did this by establishing and serving as director of the “International Safety Zone.” This paper’s research question is how did Rabe reconcile his Nazi beliefs with his heroic actions during the massacre? This paper will argue that Rabe’s heroic actions were not inconsistent with his membership in the Nazi Party.

An Environmental Biography Of Bde Ihanke-Lake Andes: History, Science, And Sovereignty Converge With Tribal, State, And Federal Power On The Yankton Sioux Reservation In South Dakota, 1858–1959, David Nesheim
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Lake Andes sits at the center of the Yankton Sioux Reservation in south-central South Dakota and might be described as a prairie pothole, except it encompasses nearly 5,000 acres when full of water, stretching twelve miles long by a mile to a mile and a half wide in a quasi-crescent shape. Originally carved out by a receding glacier during the Wisconsin glaciations, for its entire history the lake has gone dry during low precipitation -- a cycle interrupted after the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) commissioned several artesian wells beginning in 1896. As the lake expanded, the U.S. Fish Commission …

Section I analyzes the legal framework and history of collective bargaining in Illinois, and Section II follows with a similar analysis for Virginia. Each section includes current data about public sector employees and union activity in the two states. Section III follows with a discussion of possible explanations for the differences in the law of the two states. Section IV looks at the lessons from this analysis for state and federal lawmakers, unions, employers, and labor relations advocacy groups.

John Dewey And The Question Of Race: The Fight For Odell Waller, Sam F. Stack Jr.

John Dewey and the Question of Race: The Fight for Odell Waller Abstract: In an attempt to better understand the complexity of American racism and democracy, this paper explores racism through the plight of an African American sharecropper, Odell Waller, and the reaction and involvement of John Dewey, America’s most liberal democratic philosopher of the 20th century. This exploration delves into the nature of American justice in one of the most difficult struggles in our history, the late years of the Depression and the early years of World War II. Furthermore, the paper traces Dewey’s limited discussion of race and …
