The Human And Environmental Impact Of The Radium Dial-Painting Industry, Ian Stewart
The Human And Environmental Impact Of The Radium Dial-Painting Industry, Ian Stewart
Honors Capstones
The discovery and use of radium paint as a means to illuminate household products introduced this carcinogen into American industry in the early 20th century. This paper examines the human and environmental impact of the radium dial-painting industry on Ottawa, Illinois from its introduction in 1920 to 2007. My research shows that the negative effects of radium exposure were not limited to the people who directly handled radium paint. Lack of proper accountability and insufficient cleanup procedures led to the widespread radioactive contamination of Ottawa. Though the USEP A conducted decontamination efforts in the 1990s, radiation was not fully removed …
The Road To Modern India Through World War Ii, The Great Partition, And The Green Revolution, Lydia Dumais
The Road To Modern India Through World War Ii, The Great Partition, And The Green Revolution, Lydia Dumais
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores some of the administrative failings of the British Raj at the twilight of its reign, beginning at the close of World War II with the rising tide of Indian nationalism. After a century of British rule, the call for Indian independence was growing deafening. A discourse had began in India: What defined India, as a people and as a nation? In the struggle for independence from the British the question of national identity became intertwined with religious identity, causing a deep divide between the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League. The road towards independence became a …

This thesis explores the intersection of the formalization of schools and the feminization of teaching in the nineteenth century. Specifically, it shares the perspective of the displaced male teacher who often re-located into newly formed administrative positions in the field of education.
Making Of A Second-Class Citizen: A Case Study Of The Institutionalized Oppression Of Blacks In New Orleans, Andrew Stowe
Making Of A Second-Class Citizen: A Case Study Of The Institutionalized Oppression Of Blacks In New Orleans, Andrew Stowe
Senior Independent Study Theses
New Orleans has been a cultural melting pot since the four centuries since its foundation. Along with all the mixing of cultures and races in the former slave city, racial divisions were created by the governments that controlled the city. This history of inequality and oppression has been a blight on the city's records and this paper will explore the three main injustices that have placed blacks into the role of being second-class citizens. These three issues are race-based violence, environmental injustice, and neighborhood segregation. This paper will chronicle events of the three injustices that have pushed blacks to be …

Whose Britain Is This Anyway: Questioning Race, Class, Immigration And Nationality In Great Britain Between 1948 And 2011, Christina Jayne Cruce
Whose Britain Is This Anyway: Questioning Race, Class, Immigration And Nationality In Great Britain Between 1948 And 2011, Christina Jayne Cruce
Senior Independent Study Theses
This work discusses how questions of race, class, immigration and nationality have changed since 1948. To answer it I looked at the 1981 Brixton race riot and the 2011 UK urban youth riots. I argue that, despite improvements in black and white race relations, British society has continued to discriminate against black-Brits on multiple levels. I have also found that since the 1980s there has been a governmental and, more generally, a societal neglect of the working-class population as a whole. In regards to the findings of other scholars and historians, my work looks at both urban, poor blacks and …

Rats! Foiled Again: A History Of Rodent Control Methods Development At The National Wildlife Research Center, Kathleen A. Fagerstone, Michael W. Fall, Gary W. Witmer, William C. Pitt
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) and its predecessor laboratories have a long history of developing materials and methods for managing rodents and the damage they cause. The NWRC has been influential in exploring, developing, and maintaining legal uses of many traditional field rodenticides such as strychnine and zinc phosphide. Products have been developed for managing rodents in a variety of locales, and for managing a variety of species, from commensal rodents in urban areas, to pocket gophers and mountain beaver in forests, prairie dogs and ground squirrels on rangelands, and nutria and beaver in wetlands. Considerable research has also …
The Moral Dimension Of Employment Dispute Resolution, Theodore J. St. Antoine
The Moral Dimension Of Employment Dispute Resolution, Theodore J. St. Antoine
Articles
Dispute resolution may be viewed from the perspective of economics or negotiation or contract law or game theory or even military strategy. In this Article, I should like to consider employment dispute resolution in particular from the perspective of morality. I do not necessarily mean "morality" in any religious sense. By "morality" here I mean a concern about the inherent dignity and worth of every human being and the way each one should be treated by society. Some persons who best exemplify that attitude would style themselves secular humanists. Nonetheless, over the centuries religions across the globe have played a …
Bringing Clarity To Administrative Search Doctrine: Distinguishing Dragnets From Special Subpopulation Searches, Eve Brensike Primus
Bringing Clarity To Administrative Search Doctrine: Distinguishing Dragnets From Special Subpopulation Searches, Eve Brensike Primus
Articles
Anyone who has been stopped at a sobriety checkpoint, screened at an international border, scanned by a metal detector at an airport or government building, or drug tested for public employment has been subjected to an administrative search or seizure. Searches of public school students, government employees, and probationers are characterized as administrative, as are business inspections and-increasingly-wiretaps and other searches used in the gathering of national security intelligence. In other words, the government conducts thousands of administrative searches every day. None of these searches requires either probable cause or a search warrant. Instead, courts evaluating administrative searches need only …
Entering Nam: A Comparative Study Of The Entrance Experiences Of Volunteer And Drafted Service Members Into The Military During The Vietnam War, Ashley Wilt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many historians have conducted oral history interviews with Vietnam War veterans in an attempt to offer a more personal perspective to the study of the Vietnam War; however, most historians do not consciously differentiate between drafted and volunteer veterans. Identifying whether a veteran was drafted into service or volunteered is critical because the extent to which this service was voluntary or coerced may affect the way a veteran remembers his military service. By conducting oral histories, one can consciously delineate service members who volunteered as opposed to those who were drafted to determine if the veterans‟ experiences change based on …

The Eloquence Of Stone: Propagandistic Function Of Monumental And Funerary Art In Nineteenth Century Paris, Lauren Close
Senior Independent Study Theses
This I.S. concentrates on the role that various socio-economic groups played in the development of a new monumental and funerary art aesthetic in the aftermath of the French Revolution. In particular, this work focuses on the cultural influence of the French military elites, Grands Hommes and the bourgeoisie within the public spaces of nineteenth century Paris.

Models Of Youth Work: A Framework For Positive Sceptical Reflection, Trudi Cooper
Models Of Youth Work: A Framework For Positive Sceptical Reflection, Trudi Cooper
Research outputs 2012
In the post-welfare state, youth workers need models to articulate the purpose and value of their work to politicians and the public, and to explain foundational assumptions about society, young people, values, and mechanisms for personal and social change. Robust on-going discussion about models clarifies the relationship between theory and practice and enables youth work to make use of advances in knowledge in other disciplines, and to innovate constructively when faced with social and political change. Theorisation of models of youth work flourished briefly in the final quarter of the twentieth century. Renewed models of youth work are urgently needed. …

Is Islam The Solution?: The Muslim Brotherhood And The Search For An Islamic Democracy In Egypt, Erica Devine
Is Islam The Solution?: The Muslim Brotherhood And The Search For An Islamic Democracy In Egypt, Erica Devine
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Since the removal of President Mubarak in 2011, the role of the Muslim Brotherhood as a political force within Egypt has grown exponentially. These events have called into question the role the Muslim Brotherhood will play in the creation of a new government in Egypt. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Brotherhood underwent a gradual transformation of its ideology in the direction of democracy and political participation. The influence of such ideologues as Hasan al-Banna, Hasan Isma‘il al-Hudaybi, Umar al-Tilmisani, and Yusef al-Qaradawi provided the foundation for this transition and spurred the movement towards the blending of civil and religious agendas. …

The Evolution Of Cauterization: From The Hot Iron To The Bovie., Michelle F. Deleon, Ms, Charles J. Yeo, Md, Pinckney Maxwell, Iv, Md
Department of Surgery Gibbon Society Historical Profiles
The Bovie electrocautery has become a fundamental tool of modern-day surgery, particularly for its integral role in hemostasis, yet despite this landmark invention and its widespread use, there is very little said about the man behind the machine: William T. Bovie. It would be thousands of years from the inception of cautery in medicine until the birth of Dr. Bovie and his device. However, his work in biophysics and collaboration with Dr. Harvey Cushing would revolutionize surgical practice in the early 20th century and forever ingrain his name into the field of surgery.
Madonna Inn: A Hotel In Context, Galadriel Bree Highhouse
Madonna Inn: A Hotel In Context, Galadriel Bree Highhouse
Master's Theses
This paper examines the political, economic and social influences that contributed to the development of the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. I provide a brief history of the hotel industry and place the Madonna Inn within the historiography and argue that the nexus of three elements in the 1950s and 1960s led to the growth and popularity of the Madonna Inn: fear of nuclear war, growth of the middle class, and the rise of automobile culture in America.

Political Goals And Social Ideals: Dewey, Democracy, And The Emergence Of The Turkish Republic, Charles Dorn, Doris A. Santoro
Political Goals And Social Ideals: Dewey, Democracy, And The Emergence Of The Turkish Republic, Charles Dorn, Doris A. Santoro
Education and Culture
Most historical scholarship on John Dewey’s 1924 educational mission to Turkey has focused on the degree to which the educator and philosopher’s recommendations were actually implemented. By bringing the disciplinary lenses of history and philosophy to bear on Dewey’s mission, this collaborative study differs from previous work by illuminating the disjuncture between Dewey’s conception of democratic localism as essential to an educational system in a vibrant democracy (a social ideal) and Turkish officials’ view of centralized, formal education as a means to promulgate a homogeneous, modern, secular and democratic identity for their new nation-state (a political goal).
