The Anatomy Of Inequality: Medicine, Mourning, And Socioeconomic Status In Victorian England, Molly G. Decker Jul 2024

The Anatomy Of Inequality: Medicine, Mourning, And Socioeconomic Status In Victorian England, Molly G. Decker

LSU Master's Theses

"The Anatomy of Inequality: Medicine, Mourning, and Socioeconomic Status in Victorian England," examines the historic relationships between socioeconomic inequality, death, and medical practice during the Victorian period, with specific ttention on London and surrounding areas. I argue that the extreme socioeconomic disparities of the time were deeply intertwined with the practices surrounding death, mourning, and medical care. The first chapter, "The Price of Sorrow," explores the elaborate mourning rituals and displays of status among the wealthy and upper to middle-class Victorians, detailing how these practices were not only expressions of grief but also conspicuous displays of social status and wealth. …

A Historical Overview Of Kuwait’S Economic Model And Its Sustainability, Talal Alotaibi, Lucía Morales Jul 2024

A Historical Overview Of Kuwait’S Economic Model And Its Sustainability, Talal Alotaibi, Lucía Morales

Critical Letters in Economics & Finance

Kuwait’s economic and financial system relies heavily on oil and natural gas, accounting for approximately 60% of the country’s gross domestic product. The country’s economic model is heavily dependent on oil, and as such, it is significantly exposed to oil price fluctuations. This critical letter overviews the country’s transition towards a mono-reliant economy. It highlights critical sustainability challenges that emerge due to environmental deterioration and degradation and the international community pressures to address the challenges associated with climate change and the energy transition towards renewable resources.

Towards An Interdisciplinary “Science Of The Mind”: A Call For Enhanced Collaboration Between Philosophy And Neuroscience, Alessandra Buccella, Uri Maoz, Liad Mudrik Jul 2024

Towards An Interdisciplinary “Science Of The Mind”: A Call For Enhanced Collaboration Between Philosophy And Neuroscience, Alessandra Buccella, Uri Maoz, Liad Mudrik

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

In recent decades, the neuroscientific community has moved from describing the neural underpinnings of mental phenomena—as characterized by experimental psychology and philosophy of mind—to attempting to redefine those mental phenomena based on neural findings. Nowadays, many are intrigued by the idea that neuroscience might provide the “missing piece” that would allow philosophers (and, to an extent, psychologists, too) to make important advances, generating new means that these disciplines lack to close knowledge gaps and answer questions like “What is Free Will?” and “Do humans have it?.” In this paper, we argue that instead of striving for neuroscience to replace philosophy …

A History Of The Deutsche Sommerschule Am Pazifik, Sequoia J. Oar Jun 2024

A History Of The Deutsche Sommerschule Am Pazifik, Sequoia J. Oar

University Honors Theses

The number of post-secondary German immersion programs in the United States has decreased from eleven to three since their heyday in the 1960s and the 1970s. The remaining three include: the German Immersion Program at Middlebury Language Schools (est. 1915), the Deutsche Sommerschule am Pazifik (est. 1958), and the Deutsche Sommerschule von New Mexico (est. 1975). These programs provide post-secondary students with immersive German-learning experiences for undergraduate and graduate credit during a summer session each year. Of these schools, the Deutsche Sommerschule am Pazifik stands alone in not having an accessible written history available to the public, which this thesis …

Legacy Effects Of Historical Gold Mining On Floodplains Of An Australian River, Francesco Colombi, Aleicia Holland, Darren Baldwin, Susan Lawrence, Peter Davies, Ian Rutherfurd, James Grove, Jodi Turnbull, Mark Macklin, Greg Hil, Ewen Silvester Jun 2024

Legacy Effects Of Historical Gold Mining On Floodplains Of An Australian River, Francesco Colombi, Aleicia Holland, Darren Baldwin, Susan Lawrence, Peter Davies, Ian Rutherfurd, James Grove, Jodi Turnbull, Mark Macklin, Greg Hil, Ewen Silvester

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The gold rush at the end of the nineteenth century in south-eastern Australia resulted in the mobilization and re-deposition of vast quantities of tailings that modified the geomorphology of the associated river valleys. Previous studies of contamination risk in these systems have either been performed directly on mine wastes (e.g., battery sand) or at locations close to historical mine sites but have largely ignored the extensive area of riverine alluvial deposits extending downstream from gold mining locations. Here we studied the distribution of contaminant metal(loids) in the Loddon River catchment, one of the most intensively mined areas of the historical …

Jane Addams’ Forgotten Legacy: Recreation And Sport, Jerry F. Reynolds Ii Jun 2024

Jane Addams’ Forgotten Legacy: Recreation And Sport, Jerry F. Reynolds Ii

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

The intersection of social work and sport have a rich, yet largely undocumented history. In the early days of the profession, one of its founders, Jane Addams, in addition to many roles, served her community as a defacto athletic director. This commentary provides an historical overview discussing the intersection of social work in sport-based environments and community practice with American immigrants. Highlighted are details concerning populations served, the physical spaces created for sport and recreation, and the program influences generated by Addams. The author’s intent is to provide an impetus to expand the profession of social work in sport-based environments, …

Romani American History: Historical Absences And Their Consequences, Ann Ostendorf Jun 2024

Romani American History: Historical Absences And Their Consequences, Ann Ostendorf

History Faculty Scholarship

American historians have created an historical absence by ignoring Romani people’s presence in evidence from the past. The origins of this “absence-ing” are multifaceted and interrelated, but fundamentally stem from the continued influence of out-of-date and unprofessional ways of thinking and knowing. Examining and understanding “absence-ing” requires a consideration of the nature of the discipline of history as well as a history of the missing historicization of Romani Americans. The consequences of the “absence-ing” of Romani people from American histories have negatively and distinctively influenced four different groups of people: historians of the Americas; historians of Romani people in Europe; …

A Journey To A Black Woman’S (Read Black Girl’S) Joy And Her Story Of Coming Home, Brittany Lauren Brock Jun 2024

A Journey To A Black Woman’S (Read Black Girl’S) Joy And Her Story Of Coming Home, Brittany Lauren Brock

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This is an auto/ethnography about the self-actualizing journey of reclaiming storytelling as my native tongue and my journey to joy. Throughout, using my story and the stories of so many others, I not only lay out the wounds (the pain, the loss, then the hope that comes) within the academy and outside in the world but I also use storytelling as a tool of healing—my tool of healing—to show how I wrote myself free.

When Black women (read Black girls) go through The Reckoning (the moment we realize something isn’t right with how we are perceived by others) …

Never Real Historians, Emily Bluedorn Jun 2024

Never Real Historians, Emily Bluedorn

Masters Theses

Never Real Historians is a graphic inquiry into how surfacing hidden histories can lead to a liberatory and layered design practice. It is both a record of my process and a template for future making and future ancestors. Mining inheritance can be an ambiguously murky territory, full of contradictions, collisions, and tension between the past and present. My hope is that this thesis functions as a model of navigating that terrain, by interacting with storied objects and ephemera, in order to revive forgotten and marginalized histories. By re-examining my own shared and personal inheritances, as an American woman designer living …

Using A Historical Approach To Teach Social Justice: A Classroom Model, Mary L. Troy, Timothy Powers, Emily Lee Chong May 2024

Using A Historical Approach To Teach Social Justice: A Classroom Model, Mary L. Troy, Timothy Powers, Emily Lee Chong

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Social Justice epitomizes the Ignatian ideal of “men and women for others”. Utilizing Ignatian pedagogy, faculty at Jesuit colleges and universities can help students explore and understand the link between historical events and current social justice issues. This article demonstrates and applies a six-step model of utilizing history as a tool for social justice. The model can be adapted for any field of study at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Abortion, Citizenship, And The Right To Travel, Rebecca E. Zietlow May 2024

Abortion, Citizenship, And The Right To Travel, Rebecca E. Zietlow

Employee Rights and Employment Policy Journal

This article considers the changed landscape for abortion rights since the United States Supreme Court’s opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. Before Dobbs, the right to choose an abortion was a fundamental right under federal law, enforceable against all state governments. After Dobbs, the scope of one’s right to choose an abortion depends on the state in which one lives, and if abortion is illegal in their home state, their right to travel to another state where abortion is legal. The right to travel is particularly important for workers who must live in an anti-abortion state because their …

The Destruction Of Louisiana Wetlands: An Environmental History, 1900-2000, Gloria H. Adams May 2024

The Destruction Of Louisiana Wetlands: An Environmental History, 1900-2000, Gloria H. Adams

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Louisiana experienced a loss of almost 1,800 square miles of land during the 1930s, primarily due to the sinking of the state's coastal wetlands. In the early 1970s, both public officials and private residents began to recognize the situation on the coast. State and federal leaders reached a consensus that immediate action was necessary to tackle the issue. Over a span of around four decades, authorities in Louisiana and Washington, D.C. enacted a sequence of legislation and regulations with the intention of safeguarding fragile ecosystems such as the wetlands in the state. In the 1980s, authorities also initiated the development …

Moral Injury In Active Service And Veteran Female Military Combatants, William Curtis Neal May 2024

Moral Injury In Active Service And Veteran Female Military Combatants, William Curtis Neal

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

A topic of concern and discussion in the mental health community, and maybe a special concern from both governmental and civilian practitioners, is the subject of moral injury. Moral Injury has been widely researched over the last 10 years and is a known and discussed condition that is linked to military personnel and veterans who have experienced events while deployed or operating in adverse conditions such as combat. The following descriptive study focuses on one group from which they have been excluded or overlooked in past studies. This creates a gap in the published literature: female servicewomen and veterans. Both …

Students Of Color At Predominantly White Institutions—The Experience, Shamar Barker May 2024

Students Of Color At Predominantly White Institutions—The Experience, Shamar Barker

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Today, many people in society advocate for higher education. Parents, above all, are usually the biggest advocates for education. While this support is necessary, important, and appreciated by all students, especially by minority students, encouragement from our loved ones only signify the tip of the iceberg. This is because of the grueling experience that many students of color face at predominantly white institutions. Only then is the magnitude of said support put to the ultimate test, raising the question of how far support from family and peers really gets you when navigating a system that may not have been tailored …

Spiritual Chemistry: The Theosophic Roots Of Newtonian Alchemy, Jeffery Tucker May 2024

Spiritual Chemistry: The Theosophic Roots Of Newtonian Alchemy, Jeffery Tucker

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

The popularization of mathematics in the Modern Era and the subsequent proliferation of technologies have created a cultural environment in which the meaning of 'science' is often assumed to be self-evident. Philosophically, this presumptive consensus derives many of its arguments from Popperian criteria, which seek to delineate the critical differences between 'science' and 'non-science.' These demarcations imply that 'science' is an empiric reality, discoverable in both its methods and qualities. Although Kuhnian relativism has attenuated the robustness of these assertions, the fact remains that many individuals purport to have an intuitive ability to state definitively, "This is science." Such claims …

The Long-Term Effects Of The Negative Stereotypes On Black Women, Ashley L. Mock May 2024

The Long-Term Effects Of The Negative Stereotypes On Black Women, Ashley L. Mock

Counselor Education Capstones

Black women have historically faced unique experiences in the United States since the era of slavery. The capstone paper is focused on understanding the long-term effects of negative stereotypes when it comes to Black women. The research explores the complex elements surrounding the experiences of Black women, mainly focusing on historical contexts, prevalent stereotypes such as the strong Black woman schema, and the intersecting challenges of gendered racial discrimination. The research delves into the influence of family dynamics in shaping these stereotypes and examines how intersectionality influences Black women’s identity. Furthermore, the research investigates the complicated relationship between negative stereotypes …

See Me Show Me: Black Women Representation In Television Sitcoms, Lauryn Jennings

Master's Theses

Television is a commonplace item within the households of America. It brings the family together as well teaching people about other people. With this Black women have been shown in one-dimensional images that are harmful. Although these stereotypes are old they are still present within modern television sitcoms.

Diversifying The Archival Record Through Community Archiving, Natalie Pan May 2024

Diversifying The Archival Record Through Community Archiving, Natalie Pan

Library Research Scholars Pilot Program Spring 2024

Archives have long marginalized the narratives of oppressed American populations, owing to their lack of representation in mainstream archiving. In turn, communities have opted to create their own archives that become the catalyst for more dialogue surrounding their histories, called community archives. This study looks at how other universities have partnered with their local communities to document richer local histories that help maintain partnerships between the two. Conversing with other community archivists helps to realize the process of making a community archive in their respective institutions, which furthers the relationships between the university and local communities and institutions. By generating …
