Oral Histories Of World War Ii Glider Pilots, Matthew Carter Bates, Dr. Frank W. Clawson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In an age of supersonic jets and satellite-guided bombs, it is hard to imagine that the United States would ever send American troops behind enemy lines in little more than a plywood box covered with canvas, but during World War II that is exactly what happened. In fact, a team of six to ten men assembled America’s first stealth fighter in about eight hours using only a kit of five oak crates and no power tools (Brennan 1991,16-17). It was called the WACO CG-4A, a glider aircraft that carried the heralded 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions into World War II’s …
From Pork To Mutton: A Zooarchaeological Perspective On Colonial New Amsterdam And Early New York City, Haskell J. Greenfield
From Pork To Mutton: A Zooarchaeological Perspective On Colonial New Amsterdam And Early New York City, Haskell J. Greenfield
Northeast Historical Archaeology
This article analyzes the zooarchaeological remains from historical deposits to increase our understanding of the relationship between diet and ethnicity in early colonial New York City. Excavations at the Broad Financial Plaza recovered faunal remains documenting approximatley two centuries of historical occupation (middle 17th to the middle of the 19th century), a sequence rivaled by few other early colonial North American localities. Several trends are apparent in the data. Relative frequencies of pig remains declined while mutton and cattle increased correspondingly as New Amsterdam became the British colony of New York and as the Dutch residents on the block were …

Prospect Hill: Skeletal Remains From A 19th-Century Methodist Cemetery, Newmarket, Ontario, S. Pfeiffer, J. C. Dudar, S. Austin
Northeast Historical Archaeology
During 1989-90, in response to disruption caused by a building site excavation in Newmarket, Ontario, archaeological and biological information was salvaged from a former church cemetery dating from 1824 or 1827 to 1879. The skeletal remains of 77 indivaduals indicate a population with high infant mortality and little access to medical or dental care. Nevertheless, the autopsy of a young pregnant woman and one gold dental filling indicate there was an incipient interest in biomedical that mechanisms be available to allow the salvage of as much historical and biological information as possible.

Then And Now: The Progress In Hepatitis B Treatment Over The Past 20 Years., Dina Halegoua-De Marzio, Hie-Won Hann
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
The ultimate goals of treating chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is prevention of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and hepatic decompensation. Since the advent of effective antiviral drugs that appeared during the past two decades, considerable advances have been made not only in controlling hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, but also in preventing and reducing the incidence of liver cirrhosis and HCC. Furthermore, several recent studies have suggested the possibility of reducing the incidence of recurrent or new HCC in patients even after they have developed HCC. Currently, six medications are available for HBV treatment including, interferon and five nucleoside/nucleotide analogues. In this …

Creating The Continuum: J. E. Wallace Wallin And The Role Of Clinical Psychology In The Emergence Of Public School Special Education In America, Philip M. Ferguson
Education Faculty Articles and Research
This paper reviews the history of the continuum of services in intellectual disability programs. The emergence of public school special education in the United States in the first two decades of the 20th century is used as a case study of this history by focusing on events and personalities connected to the St. Louis Public Schools. Using Annual Reports from the era along with the abundant publications and personal papers of J.E. Wallace Wallin, the author explores how the growing class of specialists in clinical psychology and psychometrics gained a foothold in the schools as educational gatekeepers for student placements …

The History Of The Department Of Landscape Architecture And Environmental Planning 1939-2014, Utah State University, Laep Department
Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning 75th Anniversary
As the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at Utah State University celebrates its first 75 years of existence, it is appropriate to reflect back on the individuals who have laid the foundation for what the department has become, and to trace its evolution from the first two graduates in 1940 to over 1,500 today. Given the amount of time covered, the plethora of actors involved, and the many stories to be told, it is inevitable that events have been missed. It is hoped, however, that enough is presented to provide a substantial overview of the program’s growth and …

Attempting An Affirmative Approach To American Broadcasting: Ideology, Politics, And The Public Telecommunications Facilities Program, Michael W. Huntsberger
Attempting An Affirmative Approach To American Broadcasting: Ideology, Politics, And The Public Telecommunications Facilities Program, Michael W. Huntsberger
Faculty Publications
The Public Telecommunications Facilities Program (PTFP) was the largest source of capital funding for U.S. public broadcasters for nearly fifty years. Between 1963 and 2010, the PTFP distributed more than $800 million to support the construction of public broadcasting facilities. Though the PTFP itself was generally noncontroversial, the fortunes of the program were complicated by the partisan politics of public broadcasting and federal fiscal policy. This study provides evidence of the ambiguous and contingent nature of the American approach to public broadcasting, and demonstrates some of the problems associated with affirmative efforts by government to advance public communication.

How should historians speak truth to power -- and why does it matter? Why is five hundred years better than five months or five years as a planning horizon? And why is history -- especially long-term history -- so essential to understanding the multiple pasts which give rise to our conflicted present? The History Manifesto is a call to arms to historians and everyone interested in the role of history in contemporary society.

The notion of decreasing pain in surgery stretches back thousands of years with alcohol noted as one of the first anesthetics. Natural elements including coca and opium have been used by various civilizations in an attempt to mute the searing pain of surgery. By the 16th century, physicians around the world began to experiment with nitrous oxide and ether, providing the groundwork for the future of modern anesthesia. The successful application of general anesthesia in surgery was first documented in 1804 by Dr. Seishu Hanaoka (Fig. 1) in Wakayama, Japan, during a breast lumpectomy. During the case, Dr. Hanaoka served …

From Commonwealth To Constitutional Limitations: Thomas Cooley's Michigan, 1805-1886, Robert Allan Olender
SJD Dissertations
In response to what he perceived as the challenges associated with republican governance in the later portions of the nineteenth century, Michigan’s Thomas McIntyre Cooley penned his treatise concerning constitutional limitations on legislative power. In it, Cooley offered a vision of government where courts would check government power and would raise constitutional barriers against the impact of improper influences on legislators. As a student of history, Cooley grounded his beliefs and doctrines in experience, not philosophical reflections. Believing that “the fruits of speculative genius in government are of little value,” Cooley submitted that governing structures and law “must be the …

Criminalization Of Polygamy In Canada: Historical, Legal And Sociological Analysis, Washi Ahmed
Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series
The Canadian Criminal Code criminalizes the act of polygamy pursuant to s.290, and bigamy (another act which is similar to polygamy) pursuant to s.293 under the assumption that such practices have an adverse impact on women and children. However, the history of the criminalization of polygamy in Canada suggests that it was enacted deliberately to marginalize a particular minority group. This paper is divided into four chapters. Chapter I discusses the historical background of polygamy and indicates that the criminalization of polygamy in Canada was an adoption of the American legal approach to Mormonism. Chapter II analyzes the provisions of …

The Ghost Of Ravishment That Lingers In The Land: The Beginnings Of Environmentalism In Seraph On The Suwanee And Go Down, Moses, Elisabeth Anne Wagner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Zora Neale Hurston and William Faulkner are recognized for their environmental writing. However, few scholars have acknowledged the sophisticated environmentalism present in Hurston's Seraph on the Suwanee and Faulkner's fictional depiction of Lafayette County in Go Down, Moses. This thesis seeks to prove that Hurston and Faulkner were keenly aware of the ecological problems of their hometowns through a close reading of each book alongside the environmental history each book was based on, Eatonville, Florida and Lafayette County, Mississippi respectively. Each author's distinct regional environmental knowledge helped Hurston and Faulkner to see larger national and global problems with using land …
