History Of The Patient’S History: Exploring Origins, Developments, And Debates Of The Art Of Clinical Case-Taking, Joanne Chiao Apr 2014

History Of The Patient’S History: Exploring Origins, Developments, And Debates Of The Art Of Clinical Case-Taking, Joanne Chiao

UROP Posters

The development of patient-centered and narrative medicine in the late modern era transformed interactions between western medical doctors and their patients. The healing process now involved treating not just the illness, but interacting in more complex ways with the whole individual. This limited study focused on the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) publications in the 20th century and examined various historical relationships between and among patient medical history-taking and the patient narrative. Relationships included medical education reforms, diagnostic technology, information technology, and medical science knowledge. These categories and variables, when compared to various historical contexts, provide greater insight …

Politics Of The Cigarette: Smoking, Health, And The Surgeon General (1960-1969), Joanne Chiao Apr 2014

Politics Of The Cigarette: Smoking, Health, And The Surgeon General (1960-1969), Joanne Chiao

UROP Posters

Cigarette consumption reached an all-time national high in the early 1960s. With scientific articles linking cigarettes with cancer, the public questioned whether the personal choice was a hazardous one. As a result, the federal government began investigating the health effects of cigarette smoking and regulating the tobacco industry's labeling and advertising. Under the direction of United States Surgeon General Dr. Luther Leonidas Terry (1961-1965), the Public Health Service (PHS) issued one of the first large-scale initiatives to curtail the power of American Tobacco, the 1964 Smoking and Health: Report of the Advisory Committee to the Surgeon General of the Public …

Applying Freudian Psychological Theory To The Literature And Life Of Fyodor Dostoevsky, Kevin C. Rockwell Apr 2014

Applying Freudian Psychological Theory To The Literature And Life Of Fyodor Dostoevsky, Kevin C. Rockwell

Spring 2014, Dostoevsky

As a writer who famously aimed to capture the essence of humanity in his literature, Fyodor Dostoevsky often created incredibly intriguing, yet quite complex characters to accomplish this goal. Though psychology had not yet grown into an independent discipline during Dostoevsky's tenure as a novelist, as the field began to emerge it became clearer that his literature touched upon many psychological tenets. Specifically, the psychological theories of Sigmund Freud would prove to be very similar to Dostoevsky's writing, prompting many comparisons. This paper aims to apply Freudian psychological theory to Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment and The Double in an attempt …

How D.H. Lawrence Amends Dostoevsky’S Reality, Amanda R. Brown Apr 2014

How D.H. Lawrence Amends Dostoevsky’S Reality, Amanda R. Brown

Spring 2014, Dostoevsky

This paper explores the reception of Dostoevsky by British modernists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Particularly, it focuses on D.H. Lawrence's reaction to Dostoevsky. Outlined in the body of the paper is Lawrence's reality, which is deemed far more radical than Dostoevsky's reality, which is also described in depth. Both Dostoevsky's and Lawrence's world-visions are examined through their portrayal of religion, moral guilt, rationality, and sense of self. Lawrence creates a new religion and characters devoid of guilt. He replaces traditional rationality with a novel system of physical consciousness and portrays genuine characters. On the other hand, …

Flighty Subjects: Sovereignty, Shifting Cultivators, And The State In Darjeeling, 1830-1856, Catherine Warner Apr 2014

Flighty Subjects: Sovereignty, Shifting Cultivators, And The State In Darjeeling, 1830-1856, Catherine Warner

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This paper focuses on the historical experiences of shifting cultivators who lived in the eastern Himalaya in the areas around Darjeeling, Eastern Nepal, and Southern Sikkim in the early 19th century. These groups played an important role in state-formation in the pre-colonial period, as regionally expansive states relied upon them for labor, military levies, and revenue. Shifting cultivators were organized under headmen who dispensed justice, collected taxes, and negotiated with the state on behalf of their clients. The author argues that such groups formed the basis of sovereignty on the frontier, where control over subjects was more significant than control …

The Plight Of Prostitution: A Study Of Sonia Marmeladov In Crime And Punishment, Clare Carroll Apr 2014

The Plight Of Prostitution: A Study Of Sonia Marmeladov In Crime And Punishment, Clare Carroll

Spring 2014, Dostoevsky

Fyodor Dostoevsky's celebrated novel Crime and Punishment (1866) exposes complex moral issues testing the urban population of nineteenth century St. Petersburg. Prostitution is one theme that complicates the novel, and Dostoevsky invites readers to consider the prostitute’s point of view. In 1843, the tsarist Ministry of Internal Affairs appointed “medical-police committees” to regulate prostitution in Russia. Registered prostitutes were typically poor urban women, and they became subject to strict rules. Sonia Marmeladov, an emblem of virtue in Crime and Punishment, endures the horrors of commercialized sex. Though her virtue and religious faith far exceed that of the average person, her …

Periodization Of Robert Mugabe’S Land Policy In Zimbabwe, Kenneth Warhurst Apr 2014

Periodization Of Robert Mugabe’S Land Policy In Zimbabwe, Kenneth Warhurst

Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences

This project explores how Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe handled the culturally vital land issue. Research was conducted using scholarly sources including books and academic articles related to Zimbabwe, Rhodesia, land policy, economic analysis, and governmental legal policies. Information collected was divided into four historical periods based on the major land policies shaping government action. This periodization helps simplify the land issue by contextualizing the vast information surrounding Zimbabwean history. Analysis of government actions during these periods shows the land issue consistently being tied to other goals. The essay argues that Mugabe has used the call of land reform to fulfill …

New Problems, New Day, Beverly Sparks Apr 2014

New Problems, New Day, Beverly Sparks

Journal of Extension

New challenges are constantly on the horizon for America's agricultural producers. Cooperative Extension has, historically, played a significant role in the success of agricultural production and communities across the United States by providing science-based information and education. From Extension's role in addressing devastation affecting cotton production by the boll weevil in the late 1800s, to today's concerns regarding kudzu bugs, it is clear Extension remains not only relevant but is essential to agricultural endeavors. As we ramp up for a world population of 9 billion by 2050, the need for Extension remains.

Missing Mcveigh, Michael E. Tigar Apr 2014

Missing Mcveigh, Michael E. Tigar

Michigan Law Review

The bombing that killed at least 169 people became an event by which time was thereafter measured — at least in Oklahoma. Ninety minutes after the bombing, a state trooper arrested Timothy McVeigh on a traffic charge; within hours, he was linked to the bombing, and the legal process began. Terry Nichols, who had met McVeigh when they were in the army together, was arrested in Herington, Kansas, where he lived with his wife and daughter. The Tenth Circuit chief judge designated Richard Matsch, chief judge for the District of Colorado, to preside over the case. Judge Matsch came to …

The Prediction, Sushma Joshi Mar 2014

The Prediction, Sushma Joshi

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

"The Prediction" was told to writer Sushma Joshi by her father--it is considered a true story. Joshi's family were astrologers till her grandfather's generation, after which their branch of the family stopped practicing astrology. The word "Joshi" is a common surname derived from "Jyotish", which means Vedic astrologers, and is shared by both Brahmin and Newar astrologers in Nepal. Their original surname was "Regmi". The family fled the Mogul invasion 700 years ago, and came from the Kumaon area of the Indian Himalayas (more specifically, Naini Tal's Joshi Muth) to Bajhang, before migrating to Kathmandu to work at the royal …

An Instructional Model To Support Problem-Based Historical Inquiry: The Persistent Issues In History Network, Thomas Brush, John Saye

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

For over a decade, we have collaborated with secondary school history teachers in an evolving line of inquiry that applies research-based propositions to the design and testing of a problem-based learning framework and a set of wise practices that represent a professional teaching knowledge base for implementing a particular model of instruction, problem-based historical inquiry (PBHI). PBHI centers history instruction on decision-making about persistent societal problems as they occur in particular historical periods. In order to prepare future teachers to be better able to implement this model in their classrooms, we have integrated components of this model throughout our secondary …
