SURGE
“What are some examples of white privilege?” my professor asked.
I felt an audible tension in the class as this was asked. This is a tricky subject, especially when you’re talking to a class full of mostly white, privileged people (myself included). [excerpt]

Shifting Gear: A Historical Analysis Of The Use Of Supportive Apparel In Powerlifting, Jan Todd, Dominic G. Morais, Ben Pollack, Terry Todd
Shifting Gear: A Historical Analysis Of The Use Of Supportive Apparel In Powerlifting, Jan Todd, Dominic G. Morais, Ben Pollack, Terry Todd
School of Business Faculty Research
In many ways, powerlifting is an odd sport. Competitors do not run or jump; no balls, bats, or rackets are used; and only one competitor "plays" on the lifting platform at a time. Judging can be highly subjective; three judges intently watch as the athlete lifts the loaded barbell nine separate times over the course of the competition. There is no instant replay and most lifts take less than ten seconds to perform. At the end of the lift, each judge throws a switch; if at least two white lights appear, the lift is good; if two or more lights …
History, Governmental Structure, And Politics: Defining The Scope Of Local Board Of Health Power, Pekham Pal
History, Governmental Structure, And Politics: Defining The Scope Of Local Board Of Health Power, Pekham Pal
Fordham Law Review
Local boards of health often issue regulations that have broad effects that surpass the borders of the city or county to which they apply. Promulgation of such rules by board of health members appointed by the executive branch implicates separation of powers concerns; because such regulations may so extensively burden a locality’s citizens, it may be more appropriate for elected officials to adopt these regulations. Indeed, local businesses or other interested parties often bring suit challenging local board of health actions. Courts apply different analytical methodologies to review these challenges, which often leads to incongruent local health agency discretion for …
The Experiment Must Continue: Medical Research And Ethics In East Africa, 1940–2014, Melissa Graboyes
The Experiment Must Continue: Medical Research And Ethics In East Africa, 1940–2014, Melissa Graboyes
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
The Experiment Must Continue is a beautifully articulated ethnographic history of medical experimentation in East Africa from 1940 through 2014. In it, Melissa Graboyes combines her training in public health and in history to treat her subject with the dual sensitivities of a medical ethicist and a fine historian. She breathes life into the fascinating histories of research on human subjects, elucidating the hopes of the interventionists and the experiences of the putative beneficiaries.
Historical case studies highlight failed attempts to eliminate tropical diseases, while modern examples delve into ongoing malaria and HIV/AIDS research. Collectively, these show how East Africans …

Rhode Island Election Tickets: A Survey, Russell J. Desimone, Daniel C. Schofield
Technical Services Faculty Publications
Rhode Island was the first English colony in America to issue printed election ballots, with the first issued in the mid-1740s. America’S Evolution Of Women And Their Roles In The Intelligence Community, Amy J. Martin
America’S Evolution Of Women And Their Roles In The Intelligence Community, Amy J. Martin
Journal of Strategic Security
The role of women in the Intelligence Community has evolved over time and captures the use of their skills to further assist, perpetuate, and lead intelligence operations globally. This paper serves as a historical overview of some of the techniques of the early female spies and highlights the successes of the modern woman’s contributions to the intelligence mission. Emerging female operations officers often face obstacles: dealing with bias within the bureaucracy, issues of female equality within certain cultures, and experiencing slower rates of promotion. This has meant a lack of females in competitive leadership positions. Female mentors and former intelligence …
All Propaganda Is Dangerous, But Some Are More Dangerous Than Others: George Orwell And The Use Of Literature As Propaganda, Samantha Senn
All Propaganda Is Dangerous, But Some Are More Dangerous Than Others: George Orwell And The Use Of Literature As Propaganda, Samantha Senn
Journal of Strategic Security
The true battles of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union were fought on the ideological front: pitting democracy and capitalism against totalitarianism and communism. The Office of Policy Coordination (OPC) of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was formed in the late 1940s to help combat the spread of Communism across Europe and in the United States. Part of the “psychological warfare” included the use of propaganda. Around the same time, British author George Orwell had recently published Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. Both novels, due to the anti-Communist overtones, were adopted by the OPC …
