[illegible] BuellSUPERINTENDENT OF CITY SCHOOLSandPRINCIPAL OF HIGH SCHOOLJANESVILLE, WISCONSINJanesville, Wis.,April 6, 1908.Mr. John Muir,Martinez, Cal.Dear Sir:-My pupils in physical geography have become so much interested in your work as a student of glaciers that they wish to secure your portrait to hang in the laboratory in which they recite. They have raised the money to buy the portrait and now are quite disappointed that I am unable to obtain it for them, although I have tried to do so through all the usual channels. Will you kindly inform me whether there is published a portrait suitable for framing and, if …

The origin of law schools is lost in antiquity. It is probable there were advocates in Babylonia,1 and schools for the education of judges and scribes (perhaps the ancestral lawyers) in Egypt,2 more than 2000 years B.C. The Civil Code of Deuteronomy was published 621 B.C.,3 and soon afterward schools of the prophets were formed for its study.4 When Ezra left Babylon for Jerusalem (485 B.C.) he "set his heart * * * to teach in Jerusalem statutes and judgments,"5 and the ruins of his school could be seen by the law students at Husal, 500 years later.6 It is …

Dear Muir:
I am very glad indeed that you find Palm Springs so pleasant--- I felt pretty sure you would. I am mighty glad also, that Helen already begins to feel better. Pat her on the back for me and tell her to keep up her lick.
I am just, on my way to the mountains for a few days and shall have to leave this to be signed and forwarded to you. On my return, however, I will forward to you some geographical suggestions and some letters to some of the people who infest that part …

beautiful over there, and a very short distance to walk to get into it. I think it was a great pity you did not visit Tasmania as I am sure you would have got some new specimens; but I hope the last trip was not the final, and that you will soon take it into your head again to visit Australia; and then I will be better prepared to go with you as I will know the geography of Australia better; and then we will break all records for cheap travelling. That trip of ours up to Queensland is …

[Original letter returned to Miss M. Merrill]
Martinez, California,
January 8th, 1902.
Dear Mina Merrill:
You don't know how glad I am to get your New Year's letter - glad and sad. I hear the kind and gentle tones of your voice in it, and see you and your beloved sister as if I were beside you. Old days and present days are as one. For, with loved ones, new places and people, time, distance, and geography are of non effect.
I know your natural sorrow and loneliness. You are lonely, yet not lonely. Your sister still lives with you …

Dear Mina Merrill:
