Thomas Barnes Cuming, Jr. And The Location Of Nebraska's Territorial Capitol, Nan Viergutz Carson

Student Work

On May 30, 1854, Franklin Pierce, President of the United States, signed into law the Kansas-Negraska Act. This act, long famous in American history, had as its purpose the territorial organization of the continental heart of the United States. Pioneering settlement had populated both coastal regions as well as the east central area lying along the great Mississippi River. Between these separated portions of the United States of America stretched the high plains, an area which had been considered unfit for white civilization for over twenty years, and which, as a result, had been given by the federal government to …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

From the Mormon point of view, ignorance is a sin. Mormons believe that their very salvation is dependent upon the development of their mental and spiritual powers, as evidenced from the two following, typical statements from Mormon sacred literature: "The glory of God is intelligence;" "It is impossible for man to be saved in ignorance."

The United States And The Independence Of Buenos Aires, Eugene R. Craine Mar 1961

The United States And The Independence Of Buenos Aires, Eugene R. Craine

Fort Hays Studies Series

Prior to the era of revolution the people and the government of the United States came into contact chiefly with the border regions of Spain's American empire. Such areas as Florida, Texas, and the Greater Antilles were absorbing the attention of American expansionists. Thus, not only by action but by basic policy, the United Stateswas opposed to contributing to the independence of Buenos Aires.

A History Of Averett College, David Wesley Gray Jul 1960

A History Of Averett College, David Wesley Gray

Master's Theses

The first school in Danville was established by a Presbyterian minister, the Reverend Mr. J. Matthews, in the year 1802. This school lasted only twelve months and was followed by a procession of others which soon perished for one reason or another. In 1823 the Danville Male Academy was organized and became the forerunner of the modern public education system of Danville. Soon after, a number or schools were established for "females." This study is concerned with only one, the school that is now Averett College.

The Influence Of Rivers On The History Of Indiana, Ralph L. Bailey Jul 1960

The Influence Of Rivers On The History Of Indiana, Ralph L. Bailey

Graduate Thesis Collection

This study deals with the influence of rivers on the history of Indiana. It is difficult for us to visualize that some of the small streams that we cross many times with hardly a glance, were once the most important link in a vast chain of commerce. The early settler depended on these streams to get his surplus products to market. A glance at a road map of Indiana will reveal the importance that the early settler assigned to rivers and streams. Can you find any city or town of any size that is not located near a stream of …

A History Of The Danville Military Institute, Robert Erle Edwards Jul 1959

A History Of The Danville Military Institute, Robert Erle Edwards

Master's Theses

As the years roll by, primary sources of historical data are either lost or destroyed. This unfortunate fact has held true in the case of the Danville Military Institute. A number of good pieces of original data have disappeared since the school closed. In order to take advantage of available material before it is lost, this study of the Danville Military Institute was made. This is the first intensive study of the school, which was a credit to its city, its state, and its nation.

A History Of The Nansemond River, Virginia, Peter R. Neal Jun 1959

A History Of The Nansemond River, Virginia, Peter R. Neal

Honors Theses

The northern branch of the Nansemond abounds in scenery of the most picturesque and romantic description, and is well deserving the attention of Nature's admirers. The stream is of fresh water, winding some three or four miles in a northwesterly direction from Suffolk, and its average width is about fifty feet. In ascending its intricate windings, you are surprised at the different aspects presented to view. In some instances, the tall and majestic junipers are entirely submerged at the base, and, as you proceed, an elevation will suddenly appear, as if by magic, rising perpendicularly from the river at least …

Middle East In Crisis: A Historical And Documentary Review, Carol A. Fisher, Fred Krinsky Jan 1959

Middle East In Crisis: A Historical And Documentary Review, Carol A. Fisher, Fred Krinsky

Books

This book had its inception in a common teaching experience. Although it is now almost two years since we were first involved in the preparation of materials on the Middle East for a course in the problems of American democracy, world events continue to remind us of the critical importance of the Mediterranean area. Our students were aware of an increasing variety of proposals for the role the United States should play in easing the tensions in the Middle East, but they were relatively unfamiliar with the general history and geography of the area. Thus they were unable to evaluate …

Mao Tse-Tung And I Were Beggars, Yu Siao Jan 1959

Mao Tse-Tung And I Were Beggars, Yu Siao

Books

This book was written neither in admiration of a hero nor in condemnation of a bandit. I had neither object in view. Moreover, to my mind, the line of demarcation between the bandit and the hero is at times faint. No, in the following pages I have attempted merely to set down an accurate record of certain episodes in my life selected from the storehouse of memory as of certain interest to the public at large and in connection with current events in the Far East. More important than this, I feel it my duty, not only towards my own …

River Basin Surveys Papers, No. 15: Historic Sites Archeology On The Upper Missouri, Merrill J. Mattes, Smithsonian Institution, Bureau Of American Ethnology

US Government Documents Related to Indigenous Nations

Published as a series sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution Bureau of American Ethnology, the “River Basin Surveys Papers” are a collection of archeological investigations focused on areas now flooded by the completion of various dam projects in the United States. The River Basin Surveys Papers (numbered 1-39) were mostly published in bundles with 5-6 papers in each bundle. In collaboration with the United States (US) National Park Service and the US Bureau of Reclamation, the US Department of the Interior, and the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Smithsonian Institution pulled archeological and paleontological remains from several sites prior to …
