An American Fantasy--The Crucible Of The Frontier: Montgomery County, Iowa, 1870-1920, Charles Emery Richards
Student Work
Throughout the Midwest there was are literally hundreds of small towns, some of them quite cosmopolitan in character because of their urban neighbors, and orthers seemingly more than a hundred years behind the times. These villages were, at one time, all vanguards of the great frontier movement in American history. In spite of their differences today, during their formative years they displayed a commality that allows historians to speculate on the nature of the frontier process. This study is an effort to test Frederick Jackson Turner's theory of individualism and social mobility in a particular Iowa frontier community in the …

The Tripolitan War, 1911-1912, John D. Lyon Jr.
All Master's Theses
This paper presents an analysis of the forces of the "new imperialism" that led Italy to war with Turkey in 1911-1912. The interests of the Powers of Europe and America in the area of the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa are examined. The focal point is a resumé of the military aspects of the Tripolitan War. The concluding chapters deal with diplomatic reactions to Italy's conquest of Tripolitania and the judgment that Italy did not benefit from her imperial adventure.

"A particular method of inspecting data is known to all scholars as the geographic method, based on charting the limits or range of phenomena, features, or traits that have a localized distribution on the earth." Geographers have long been concerned with the distribution of phenomena, whether they be species of trees, refugees, cities, land use, resources, glaciers, farms, ethnic groups, religions, or a myriad of other examples, and distributional analyses are fundamental to the discipline of geography. During the infancy of geography as a discipline, the studies of distributions were mainly descriptive, but as the subject grew and became, more …

The Rise And Fall Of The Farmers' Alliance Of Virginia, Nancy Byrd Manning
The Rise And Fall Of The Farmers' Alliance Of Virginia, Nancy Byrd Manning
Honors Theses
The purpose of this paper is to trace the quick rise and
equally sudden fall of the Virginia State Farmers' Alliance. Emphasis
was given to the unique socio-economic conditions prevalent in Southern
Virginia during the latter part of the nineteenth century which forced
individual farmers into cooperation, and to the vacillating political
situation which precipitated the death of the Virginia Farmers' Alliance.
The structures and activities of the Alliance received particular attention
because they were extremely important in attracting and maintaining
membership.

An experimental group using the critical thinking packet was compared with a control group that used a continuous progress packet that taught only American history.
The dependent variables for the study were the STEP (Sequential Test of Educational Progress), Social Studies portion, and the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal. No statistically significant differences were found between the groups in either American history or critical thinking.
Differences in critical thinking ability, though not significant statistically, …
