In Re Radical Interpretations Of American Law: The Relation Of Law And History, A. E. Keir Nash

Michigan Law Review

This Article centers instead upon assessing two types of legal analysis - non-Marxist radical interpretation and "non-reductionist" Marxist theory - which, despite conspicuous differences, share the belief that understanding the American historical experience is a prerequisite to understanding American law. Both approaches also share two other important convictions. One is that a "consensual" or "liberal pluralist" version of American history has little explanatory validity, at least in regard to such major problems as the political and legal breakdown represented by the Civil War, and the law's role in American economic development. They also agree that historical explanations which downplay discussion …

Proposal To Establish A Public Middle School Academy, Leon Lederman Oct 1983

Proposal To Establish A Public Middle School Academy, Leon Lederman

Documents

The objectives of the Academy would be to accept gifted high school juniors and, in three years, provide students completely prepared to enter college as juniors.

It is proposed that the school be very strong in math-science, but it does not take too much thought to realize that it must be almost as strong in English, Social Studies and the Humanities. As a pilot project, an entrance class of 300 students per year with an average population of 800 students may represent a reasonable scale. Some of the virtues of this Academy, as contrasted with a Science High School, are …

A History Of The Village Of Midlothian, Virginia, Emphasizing The Period 1835-1935, Barbara Irene Burtchett May 1983

A History Of The Village Of Midlothian, Virginia, Emphasizing The Period 1835-1935, Barbara Irene Burtchett

Master's Theses

An overview of Midlothian from its beginning and particularly for the century 1835 to 1935 reveals a village (unincorporated) that developed to house and provide necessities for the people working in the coal mines. The same village continued to survive when the mines closed because the railroad that had come through the village to serve the local people, provided both freight and passenger services, jobs, and transportation to jobs in Richmond. As more people bought cars and trucks the railroad service dwindled but continued to provide passenger service for the entire first half of the twentieth century. Richmond took a …

The Justices Of The Peace Of Surrey In National And County Politics, 1483-1570. (Volumes I And Ii)., William Baxter Robison Iii Jan 1983

The Justices Of The Peace Of Surrey In National And County Politics, 1483-1570. (Volumes I And Ii)., William Baxter Robison Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Surrey provides an excellent case study of the role of justices of the peace in national and county politics in England during the years 1473-1570. Ample documentation exists in the central government records and a rich local collection, the Loseley MSS., and the availability of similar studies for the bordering counties of Hampshire, Kent, and Sussex allows fruitful comparisons. Moreover, though the shire was pulled in many directions by overlapping political and ecclesiastical jurisdictions (e.g., shrievalty, lieutenancy, diocese) and by various regional affinities, there was in Surrey a distinct political county community, the integrity of which all of the Tudors …

Roland Q. Leavell: A Biography (Mississippi)., Mary D. Leavell Bowman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Roland Quinche Leavell was born on December 21, 1891, as the eighth of nine boys to conservative, religious parents in Oxford, Mississippi. Raised in Oxford, he followed his mother's wishes and entered the ministry of the Southern Baptist Convention. As a pastor, he not only served well in a number of churches, but became renowned throughout the Convention for his success in evangelism. Because of this success, he won appointment to two of the most prestigious offices in the Convention: Director of Evangelism and president of the Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans. This dissertation is not, however, simply a …

A History Of The Big Trees And Avery School Districts, 1881-1940, David E. Gano Jan 1983

A History Of The Big Trees And Avery School Districts, 1881-1940, David E. Gano

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The history of a school district is usually presented as a local history. This type of history is very thorough in naming names, locating sites, and explaining events as they affected the local scene. History does not occur in a vacuum, and often the explanation for certain behaviors or events lies beyond the local phenomena. It is the intention of this study to present the history of the Big Trees and Avery School Districts within a larger context of national forces which were also at work and sometimes, dominated the events. It is hoped that the effort to bring education …

The Layered Society: Material Life In Portsmouth, Nh, 1680 To 1740 (New Hampshire), Karen Elizabeth Andresen Jan 1982

The Layered Society: Material Life In Portsmouth, Nh, 1680 To 1740 (New Hampshire), Karen Elizabeth Andresen

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation evaluates the material life and economic culture of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, from 1680 to 1740 through an analysis of the probate inventories of the estates of 234 males. It also details the methodology used to determine the twin biases of probate records--that people whose estates were probated were generally older and wealthier than people in the overall population.

The inequality of wealth was fairly static. Using model life tables, a commodity price series derived from Portsmouth goods, and weights to account for differences between the ages and economic status' of the probated and total populations, the Gini Index …

Simulations For Teaching Concepts On Washington State, Cynthia Louise Buettgenbach

All Graduate Projects

Simulation lessons and materials were developed to teach concepts on Washington State to a classroom of fourth grade students. The activities in which the students participated were the following:

1) planned trips to the five geographic regions of Washington State;

2) became part of an Indian tribe and held a meeting with other tribes at Sacajawea Park;

3) played a board game, traveling with Lewis and Clark to the Pacific Ocean;

4) held mock state elections and one legislative session.

Students showed an increased interest in social studies through the simulations.

Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin Jan 1981

Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin

Theses and Dissertations

Recently the need for a more clearly defined structural basis for American local history has become acute. Concepts used in national history often fall short of the needs of local history. As a result, both professionals and amateurs are producing a rash of community histories without the benefit of adequate guidelines.

This thesis draws together a number of concepts useful in the development of American local history as a viable academic field of study. It tests these concepts in presenting the history of community in Winder, a small, rural population set in southeastern Idaho.
