The Leveller Influence In The New Model Army From 1647 To 1649, G. Elaine Johnson
The Leveller Influence In The New Model Army From 1647 To 1649, G. Elaine Johnson
Honors Theses
Although the scope of this paper, from February of 1647 to January of 1649, would seem rather limited, the actual impact of Leveller principles and methods was felt during this short span of time. After the final Agreement of the People in early 1649, the movement seemed to center around personal attacks, reiteration of previous ideas, and defensive measures. The establishment of the Commonwealth, under the thumb of Oliver Cromwell, left behind all the Leveller plans of government, which had been discussed and approved by the Agitators and the Army Council.
Other aspects of the Leveller movement, such as their …

Traveller's Comments On Virginia Taverns, Ordinaries And Other Accomodations From 1750 To 1812, James Walter Hosier
Master's Theses
This paper will attempt to point out the comments or the various travellers in Virginia concerning the functions of public houses from 1750 to lP.12. The travellers as individuals had their prejudices, inaccuracies, and contradictions, but their remarks, on tho other hand, help to give a valuable on the scene picture of this area of early Virginia history. Traveller's comments on hospitality and transportation, two areas which greatly influenced the state's public houses, will also be included to form e better perspective, and on occasion laws, newspapers and other articles will be used to clarify and expend various topics mentioned …
British Statutes In American Law, 1776-1836, Elizabeth Gaspar Brown
British Statutes In American Law, 1776-1836, Elizabeth Gaspar Brown
Books
When a dependency severs its formal connection with the mother country - irrespective of the century in which such severance occurs - the act of independence can neither eradicate the past nor solve all problems of the future. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the United States of America discovered that independence from Great Britain in itself did not abolish the need for rules and regulations by which men could anticipate with some degree of certainty the consequences of particular actions. Wholesale adoption of such English statutes as were suited to their condition offered a solution to the …

A History Of The Missionary Activities Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In India, 1849-1856, R. Lanier Britsch
Theses and Dissertations
The East India Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was officially opened in 1851, with the arrival of Elder Joseph Richards from England. He baptized several people, the most important of whom were James Patric Meik and his family, Maurice White, and Matthew McCune and his family. The Meiks and the McCunes contributed a great deal of service to the Church in Calcutta and Rangoon. Both of these families eventaully immigrated to Utah. Elder Richards left Calcutta after a few months there and before his return some months later, was preceeded by Elder William Willes. Willes …
The Contribution Of Medical Women During The First Fifty Years In Utah, Keith Calvin Terry
The Contribution Of Medical Women During The First Fifty Years In Utah, Keith Calvin Terry
Theses and Dissertations
This is the history of those noble women who came into the territory, struggling to relieve the burden of poor medical service. This is an account of how well or how poorly they conducted the art of midwifery. From the first year the pioneers entered the region in 1847, down to 1896 when statehood was achieved, though there were male physicians in the field of medicine, Utah depended on its women. This is a study of their contribution.
The Emergence Of Law And Justice In Pre-Territorial Wisconsin, Donald P. Kommers
The Emergence Of Law And Justice In Pre-Territorial Wisconsin, Donald P. Kommers
Journal Articles
The article discusses the history of law and courts in Wisconsin from the period of French exploration in the 17th century to the 1820s. It focuses on the emergence of a structure of law and justice based on the common law tradition in Wisconsin, and argues this system played a significant role in disciplining its society. Law and courts, according to the article, fostered civility between frontiersmen, making them accustomed to the principles of fair play and equity and the practice of litigation when their interests were threatened. This development brought order to the area and shaped the future course …
