Party Lines Drawn By The Spectator, Emily W. Zehmer
Party Lines Drawn By The Spectator, Emily W. Zehmer
Honors Theses
The concept of political parties as they existed in England during the reign of Queen Anne has been the source of considerable conflict among Stuart historians. The traditional view, postulated by G. M. Trevelyan, is that the Tory and Whig parties were organized in the 1670's as outgrowths of the Cavalier and Roundhead factions of the Civil War, changing very little in the process. The Tories were a "solid phalanx of squires and parsons," whereas the Whigs were united not by class or vocation but by their agreement on various political issues: religious toleration for all Protestants, war with France …

Random Recollections Of Campaigning With Colonel Roosevelt, John Proctor Clarke
Random Recollections Of Campaigning With Colonel Roosevelt, John Proctor Clarke
The Courier
Justice of the Supreme Court of New York John Proctor Clarke (1856-1932) wrote the following reminiscences of Theodore Roosevelt's New York gubernatorial and presidential campaigns many years after the events and expressly for the Roosevelt family. Clarke was aNew York corporation attorney at the time of the campaigns and one of the company of Roosevelt supporters who traveled with the campaign trains.
The anecdotal memoirs give an interesting perspective to turn-ofthe-century political campaigns. They are naturally favorable to Roosevelt and serve to add flavor to a man who already is known as one ofour more human presidents. While the memoirs …

George Reynolds: The Early Years, Grant R. Hardy
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this writing is to present a biography of George Reynolds from 1842 through 1872. This study was made using the historical approach of doing research. The primary sources were the "Journal of George Reynolds" in six volumes and personal interviews with his living descendants. Other unpublished documents were discovered, such as copies of letters and short sketches, and were used in the writing.
