FROM MUELLER TO MILLER: DETERMINING STANDARDS FOR DECISIONS REGARDING CRITICALLY ILL NEWBORNS. Tanaz Farzan Danialifar (Sponsored by Geoffrey Miller). Section of Neurology, Department of Pediatrics, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. The controversy surrounding selective nontreatment of critically ill newborns has been ongoing for over three decades. Since ancient times ill, premature, or deformed infants have been treated discriminatorily, and infanticide has been a historically acceptable practice. With medical, moral, and legal progress, infanticide has disappeared and been replaced with selective nontreatment. This raises new ethical concerns such as best interests, quality of life, wrongful life, and parental …

Building A Meritocracy: The American Precedent For Wealth Redistribution, Micah D. Bobo
Building A Meritocracy: The American Precedent For Wealth Redistribution, Micah D. Bobo
Undergraduate Economic Review
This work investigates the use of wealth redistribution mechanisms in establishing and promoting meritocratic practices in early United States history. From the fifteenth to eighteenth century, the reward system used in exploration, colonization incentives, and land redistribution techniques are examined. During the eighteenth and nineteenth century, the effects of industrialization and education on social mobility are reviewed. Finally, the social and economic factors resulting in southern secession, particularly slavery, are examined. While the concept may be unpopular in modern society, wealth redistribution mechanisms were essential to cultivating merit-based social mobility and overall societal stability throughout the period covered.

Places Of Significance In Itelmen Country: Sacredness, Nostalgia And Identity In Kamchatka, Russia, Tatiana S. Degai
Anthropology
"This research was conducted among Itelmen people, a small indigenous group who live on the Kamchatka peninsula in the Russian Far East. The thesis explores places of significance and sacred places of Itelmens who traditionally occupied most of the peninsula. At present the majority live on the Western coast of Kamchatka on the Okhotsk Sea shore. Providing some historical background, outcomes of colonization and western presence, and description of contemporary Itelmen worldview, this study offers an overview of Itelmen concepts of perceiving, knowing, appreciating and "animating" places. These concepts are formed primarily on the basis of a sense of loss …
Heraclius And The Evolution Of Byzantine Strategy, Bob Ekkebus
Heraclius And The Evolution Of Byzantine Strategy, Bob Ekkebus
Constructing the Past
The Byzantine military strategy expressed in the 10th century treatise On Skirmishing marked a decisive shift in Byzantine strategy and an entirely new mindset in approaching war. What is unique about this strategy is that it was not created during a war against the Arabs, but before they existed as a military power. The foundation was laid during the Emperor Heraclius's Persian campaigns of 622-628. To demonstrate the key contributions of Heraclius, these Persian campaigns shall be analyzed and compared with the advice prescribed in On Skirmishing. Also, the military events recorded by Theophanes of the 7th and 8th centuries …

Can A Nazi Be A Hero?, Emily Paras
Constructing the Past
This paper centers on John Rabe, a German businessman and Nazi, who, according to several historians, helped save roughly 250,000 lives during the Rape of Nanking. He did this by establishing and serving as director of the “International Safety Zone.” This paper’s research question is how did Rabe reconcile his Nazi beliefs with his heroic actions during the massacre? This paper will argue that Rabe’s heroic actions were not inconsistent with his membership in the Nazi Party.
Subordinate Woman Or Favored Leader: Portrayals Of Mary Magdalene In Christian Canonical & Non-Canonical Gospels, William S. Miller
Subordinate Woman Or Favored Leader: Portrayals Of Mary Magdalene In Christian Canonical & Non-Canonical Gospels, William S. Miller
Constructing the Past
By comparing these Christian texts, both canonical and non-canonical, I will examine similarities and differences between the texts with regard to Mary Magdalene and interpret her textual representations. While comparing these criteria, I will simultaneously show that the two general representations symbolize a disagreement between two major sects in early Christianity on the roles of women in religion.

The Remains Of Alexander The Great: The God, The King, The Symbol, Lauren O'Connor
Constructing the Past
Each site, Siwah, Aegae, and Alexandria, represents a particular facet of Alexander—the god, the king, the symbol—and it is clear who would have benefited from putting forth and standing behind each side of the man. The meanings associated with the three potential burial sites and the intentions of each site’s main supporters offer a complex and telling view into Alexander and the post-Alexander world.
Clara Schumann: A Woman Of Her Time, Gina Tangorra
Clara Schumann: A Woman Of Her Time, Gina Tangorra
Constructing the Past
Clara Schumann was the wife of the composer Robert Schumann, the mother of seven children, a famous concert pianist, and a talented female composer in a time when few women were active in both the private and public spheres. This paper seeks to present a more objective view of Clara Schumann beyond the superficial labels of wife, mother, pianist, and composer. By closely examining her early married life to Robert through the marriage diaries, as well as letters between the couple and Clara’s own personal diary, a more complex and often conflicted woman emerges from these pages.

Establishing Creative Writing Studies As An Academic Discipline, Dianne J. Donnelly
Establishing Creative Writing Studies As An Academic Discipline, Dianne J. Donnelly
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The discipline of creative writing is charged "as the most untheorized, and in that respect, anachronistic area in the entire constellation of English studies (Haake What Our Speech Disrupts 49). We need only look at its historical precedents to understand these intimations. It is a discipline which is unaware of the histories that informs its practice. It relies on the tradition of the workshop model as its signature pedagogy, and it is part of a fractured community signaled by its long history of subordination to literary studies, its lack of status and sustaining lore, and its own resistance to reform. …

John Dewey And The Question Of Race: The Fight For Odell Waller, Sam F. Stack Jr.
Education and Culture
John Dewey and the Question of Race: The Fight for Odell Waller Abstract: In an attempt to better understand the complexity of American racism and democracy, this paper explores racism through the plight of an African American sharecropper, Odell Waller, and the reaction and involvement of John Dewey, America’s most liberal democratic philosopher of the 20th century. This exploration delves into the nature of American justice in one of the most difficult struggles in our history, the late years of the Depression and the early years of World War II. Furthermore, the paper traces Dewey’s limited discussion of race and …

Parsing The Plagiary Scandals In History And Law, Arthur Austin
Parsing The Plagiary Scandals In History And Law, Arthur Austin
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] “In 2002 the history of History was scandal. The narrative started when a Pulitzer Prize winning professor was caught foisting bogus Vietnam War exploits as background for classroom discussion. His fantasy lapse prefaced a more serious irregularity—the author of the Bancroft Prize book award was accused of falsifying key research documents. The award was rescinded. The year reached a crescendo with two plagiarism cases “that shook the history profession to its core.”
Stephen Ambrose and Doris Kearns Goodwin were “crossover” celebrities: esteemed academics—Pulitzer winners—with careers embellished by a public intellectual reputation. The media nurtured a Greek Tragedy —two superstars …

The Japanese Revolutionaries: The Architects Of The Meiji Restoration, 1860-1868, Dana Kenneth Teasley
The Japanese Revolutionaries: The Architects Of The Meiji Restoration, 1860-1868, Dana Kenneth Teasley
Student Papers (History)
Scholars have offered many conflicting interpretations of the Japanese Meiji Restoration of 1868, but few have put forth a comprehensive analysis as to the nature of the protagonists and the motivation of those who initiated this revolutionary movement. Although historical interpretations of the Restoration and its heroes have ranged from a romantic and generalized theory of economic struggle to focused studies of individuals whose motivations were singular, the true character of the samurai revolutionaries behind the Restoration is the issue here. Of those samurai who, acquired knowledge of Western civilization and technology, took part in the Restoration, and witnessed the …

Historical Archaeology Of Marion Creek, Alaska: Placer Gold Mining And The Capitalist World-System, James W. Whitney
Anthropology
"Archaeological investigations of two placer gold mining sites on Marion Creek, Alaska, a tributary of the Koyukuk River, challenge the myth of the independent prospectors of the last frontier and reveal their dependence on the capitalist world-system. The Grassy Mound Cabin site (CHN-024) consists of a small cabin and trash scatter representing individual placer mining dated to the first decade of the 20th century. The Marion Creek Mining Complex site (WIS-286) is a multi-feature site reflecting capital and labor-intensive mining from multiple occupations during the first and second decades of the 20th century. The historical context of gold mining in …

The Importance Of Intelligence In Combating A Modern Insurgency, Kevin Reamer
The Importance Of Intelligence In Combating A Modern Insurgency, Kevin Reamer
Journal of Strategic Security
Throughout history the world has been plagued by insurgencies. While the underlying causes of each new insurgency have been different, they are all similar in certain areas. This similarity entails that the effective countering of an insurgency can be turned into a science with a set of guidelines to follow based on conditions on the ground. Guidelines are important because insurgencies are flexible and to defeat them the counterinsurgency must be equally flexible if not more flexible. Good intelligence is critical to the success of an insurgency. With their small, poorly equipped forces, the leaders of insurgencies need to know …
