Christian Community And The Development Of An Americo-Liberian Identity, 1824-1878, Andrew N. Wegmann Jan 2010

Christian Community And The Development Of An Americo-Liberian Identity, 1824-1878, Andrew N. Wegmann

LSU Master's Theses

By the mid-nineteenth century, two separate visions of civilization and Christianity existed in Liberia. On the one hand, the settlers – the emigrants sent from the United States to Liberia by the American Colonization Society starting in 1822 – worshiped the external appearance of a Christian mind and “civilized” western body. They revered those citizens who spoke the best American English, lived in the grandest wood-framed houses, and wore the best American clothes. They required total indoctrination of natives into the “religion of the tall hat and frock coat” to maintain a stable, “civilized” American society. On the other hand, …

The Political Assassination Of Edmund Randolph: George Washington's Presidential Affair Of Honor, John C. Kotruch Jan 2010

The Political Assassination Of Edmund Randolph: George Washington's Presidential Affair Of Honor, John C. Kotruch

Master's Theses and Capstones

On 19 August 1795 George Washington ambushed Secretary of State Edmund Randolph in an impromptu tribunal to face the allegation of treasonous corruption in the service of France with evidence covertly provided by Great Britain.

A synthesis of the biographies of Washington and Randolph, histories of Jay's Treaty, the Whiskey Rebellion, the Battle of Fallen Timbers, and the diplomatic correspondence between Great Britain and the United States during the early republic reveals the motivations behind a British plot to manipulate the composition of the United States' government by implicating Randolph. The study dispels the myth that the intercepted French diplomatic …

Western Maine Saints: The First Mormons Of Western Maine 1830--1890, Carole A. York

Master's Theses and Capstones

This thesis is about the forty-nine individuals and ten families who converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in Bethel and Newry, Maine and the missionaries who brought them into the church. The account includes a brief history of these small back country towns, providing the historical context for the early church in Maine, and continues with the experiences of these Saints as they fled from persecution in Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. In February, 1846, the Mormons began the arduous trek to the Great Salt Lake Basin. This thesis shows that these converts, typical of other …

The Development Of Modern Corporate Governance In China And India, Nicholas C. Howson, Vikramaditya S. Khanna Jan 2010

The Development Of Modern Corporate Governance In China And India, Nicholas C. Howson, Vikramaditya S. Khanna

Book Chapters

Corporate governance reform has become a topic of considerable debate both in the US and in many emerging markets. Indeed, the discussion is important because these reforms may have potentially long-standing effects upon the global allocation of capital, and in understanding the ways in which governance norms are communicated across markets and nations in an ever-globalizing world. In this chapter we examine the corporate governance reform efforts of the world's two biggest and fastest growing emerging markets, the People's Republic of China (PRC or China) and India. In the process we find that our understanding of how and why corporate …

Privilege And Property: Essays On The History Of Copyright, Ronan Deazley, Martin Kretschmer, Lionel Bently Jan 2010

Privilege And Property: Essays On The History Of Copyright, Ronan Deazley, Martin Kretschmer, Lionel Bently

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Includes sixteen essays on the origins of copyright.

First paragraph:

What is Copyright History?

History has normative force. There was no history of colonialism, gender, fashion or crime until there were contemporary demands to explain and justify certain values. During much of the twentieth century, ‘copyright’ history (the history of legal, particularly proprietary, mechanisms for the regulation of the reproduction and distribution of cultural products – as opposed to the history of art, literature, music, or the history of publishers and art-sellers) was not thought of as a coherent, or even necessary field of inquiry. It was a pursuit of …

The Care Plan As An Indicator Of Change In Nursing Science Instruction: A Textbook-Based Analysis, Lindsay Bratton-Mullins Jan 2010

The Care Plan As An Indicator Of Change In Nursing Science Instruction: A Textbook-Based Analysis, Lindsay Bratton-Mullins

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Sciences are critical in nursing education to aid the nurse in understanding health and disease processes. Accrediting bodies for nursing education have emphasized that educators teach in ways that encourage critical thinking and, therefore, produce safe-practicing, competent nurse graduates. Nursing care plans best reflect nursing education’s central goals. Because of its longevity of use and familiarity, in this study, the nursing care plan was used as a proxy for nursing science’s learning objectives. This research was a study of the nursing care plan as an indicator for change in nursing science education in the United States to determine if change …

Voice Of Nationalism In Moniuszko's Opera, Marlena. Niewczas Jan 2010

Voice Of Nationalism In Moniuszko's Opera, Marlena. Niewczas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819-1872) is the father of the Polish national opera, and yet he is little known outside Poland. His two masterpieces, Halka and The Haunted Manor, are operatic works that contributed to the development of national music. Moniuszko composed during the middle of the nineteenth century when Poland was under control of the three Powers: Russia, Prussia, and Austria. A study of Polish history reveals the understanding of Moniuszko's position as an artist and the role of his operas. The national elements portrayed in his compositions include Polish dances, such as the polonaise, mazurka, and krakowiak, as well as …

Aristocratic Revolution?, Kenneth. Posner Jan 2010

Aristocratic Revolution?, Kenneth. Posner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis argues that in the wake of the Decembrist Revolt in Russia in 1825, the British Foreign Office was forced to address the tension between two conceptions of stability-one domestic and one international. It contends that the aristocratic ethos of the British diplomatic corps both magnified the fragile social condition of the Russian Empire and organized the political response which subordinated this concern to the international equilibrium of Europe. Ambassadors such as Lord Strangford and Edward Cromwell Disbrowe helped interpret the events of the Decembrist conspiracy while stationed in St. Petersburg and reported back to their Foreign Secretary, George …

Common Origin Of The German Contraptual Organ School And The French Classical Organ School From The Perspective Of Organ Construction, Organ Music And Organ Technique, Margaret R. Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study examines the development of German pipe organ culture and French classical pipe organ culture from a single common origin in the Duchy of Brabant, during 1450-1850, with respect to select major attributes of organ construction, organ music and organ technique. The respective music of Dieterich Buxtehude (1637-1707), Praeludium in G Minor, BuxWV 149, for the North German contrapuntalists, and of Câesar Franck (1822- 1890), Choral No. 3 in A Minor, for the classical French symphonic tradition, is highlighted and appended with suggested technique for each work.

Documenting Cultural Transition Through Contact Archaeology In Tíhoo, Mérida, Yucatán, Rhianna C. Rogers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This dissertation is concerned with the role material culture played in transformation and/or retention of Maya authority, just prior to and after Spanish contact (A.D. 1100-1800s). The primary research data used to discuss this transition was derived from the author's analysis of precolumbian and colonial artifacts from the Ciudadela Structure (YUC 2) in Tíhoo/Mérida, Yucatán-an assemblage originally collected by John Goggin in 1956 and 1957 and currently housed at the University of Florida-Florida Museum of Natural History. As one of the last standing structures in the Maya site of Tíhoo, now buried beneath the Spanish capital city Mérida, the Ciudadela …

Effects Of Variables In Oral History, Lise M. Steinhauer Jan 2010

Effects Of Variables In Oral History, Lise M. Steinhauer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study examines six oral history projects that were conducted over fifty years in Palm Beach County, Florida. The projects recorded the history of African American neighborhoods in Delray Beach and Boca Raton; individual lives in their place and times; the pioneer and Flagler eras in Palm Beach and West Palm Beach; and people, places, and events chosen by oral history students at Florida Atlantic University. As with oral histories generally, those studied inherently contain numerous variables concerning their (1) historical context, (2) format, and (3) participants, which clearly affect the outcome of recorded interviews and their written representations. Among …

Fritz Kuhn, The American Fuehrer And The Rise And Fall Of The German-American Bund, Eliot A. Kopp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

It is not generally known that a pro-Nazi organization, the German-American Bund, held sway among certain segments of American society during the 1920s and 1930s. The organization achieved its greatest successes after the self-proclaimed "American Fuehrer," Fritz Julius Kuhn, took up the reigns of leadership in 1936. Under Kuhn's leadership, the Bund saw a dramatic increase in its membership rolls; it is estimated that over 25,000 dues-paying members belonged to this first-ever National Socialist organization created outside the environs of Nazi Germany. This thesis explores reasons why this blatantly pro-Nazi organization thrived in the bastion of democracy. While most historians …

Giving Voice To Historical Trauma Through Storytelling, Barbara K. Charbonneau-Dahlen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Objectives: This study documented events contributing to historical trauma among American Indian mission boarding school survivors, described residual effects of that trauma, and verified the Dream Catcher-Medicine Wheel model as a culturally appropriate tool that enhanced storytelling. Research Design and Methods: Nine women from two Upper Plains tribes were located through snowball sampling and participant referrals. A descriptive exploratory qualitative approach facilitated them in relating their survival stories. Seven were tape-recorded and two were hand-written on the Dream Catcher-Medicine Wheel, a model specifically designed for this study; this, combined with traditional spiritual grounding ceremonies, enhanced perspective for researcher and participants …

Puente Hecho De Tierra: Un Estudio Comparativo De La Visiâon Indigenista Del Problema De La Tierra En Balâun Canâan, Por Rosario Castellanos, Y "El Problema Del Indio," Por Josâe Carlos Mariâategui, Blaire. Modic Jan 2010

Puente Hecho De Tierra: Un Estudio Comparativo De La Visiâon Indigenista Del Problema De La Tierra En Balâun Canâan, Por Rosario Castellanos, Y "El Problema Del Indio," Por Josâe Carlos Mariâategui, Blaire. Modic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis uncovers a deep and recurring link between two indigenista texts of the 20th Century: Balâun Canâan, by Rosario Castellanos, and "El problema del indio," by Jose Carlos Mariâategui. Mariategui's text, an essay, takes a deductive approach to prove that the "Indian's problem" in Peru is related to the concentration of land in the hands of his oppressors. Using Marxist theory, Mariâategui shows that only through more equitable distribution of land can the indigenous Peruvian's fortunes be improved. Castellanos chooses the years of the Cardenas presidency (1934-1940) for her novel, a work that deals with the legacy of the …

Vision Of Theophilus, Fatin Morris Guirguis Jan 2010

Vision Of Theophilus, Fatin Morris Guirguis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study is a literary and ethnographic examination of The Vision of Theophilus, a fourth century Coptic narrative, as influential counter-narrative and source of counterdiscourse against the narrative created by the historically dominant Egyptian Arab Muslim state. It shows that The Vision has provided the Copts with the means to articulate their identity as different from their oppressors through its function as a repository of Coptic ideology, history and knowledge. Specifically, it has helped them resist the erosion of those aspects of their cultural identity targeted by colonial practices through its promotion of the Coptic language, pride in Coptic history, …

Rhythms Of Rebellion: Artists Creating Dangerously For Social Change, Susan J. Erenrich Jan 2010

Rhythms Of Rebellion: Artists Creating Dangerously For Social Change, Susan J. Erenrich

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

On December 14, 1957, after winning the Nobel Prize for literature, Albert Camus challenged artists attending a lecture at the University of Uppsala in Sweden to create dangerously. Even though Camus never defined what he meant by his charge, throughout history, artists involved in movements of protest, resistance, and liberation have answered Camus’ call. Quite often, the consequences were costly, resulting in imprisonment, censorship, torture, and death. This dissertation examines the question of what it means to create dangerously by using Camus’ challenge to artists as a starting point. The study then turns its attention to two artists, Augusto Boal …

From The Mansion To The University: A History Of Armstrong Atlantic State University, 1935-2010, Janet D. Stone

About Armstrong (Archived)

A scholarly history of the University by Janet Stone, emerita history faculty member. Stone’s chronological narrative elucidates Armstrong’s historical significance and milestones: founded in 1935 as a junior college of the City of Savannah, joined the University System of Georgia in 1959, desegregated in 1962 by Otis Johnson, and relocated to the Southside campus in 1966. Soon after the move, the transition to a four-year college and development of health professions degrees, among others. Stone unpacks the University System of Georgia’s court-ordered desegregation plans for Armstrong starting in the 1970s. Savannah was a special case, home to Savannah State University, …

Culture And Exchange: The Jews Of Königsberg, 1700-1820, Jill Storm Jan 2010

Culture And Exchange: The Jews Of Königsberg, 1700-1820, Jill Storm

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation traces the history of the Jewish community in Königsberg, East Prussia, from its founding in 1700 to the aftermath of the Prussian Emancipation Edict of 1812, as well as the early stages of Jewish embourgeoisement and political integration. My project combines aspects of a traditional communal history with newer trends in Jewish history, including an integrated discussion of economic and cultural life. I argue that the commercial successes of the Jewish mercantile elite in Königsberg, in particular of the Friedländer family, set the stage for the publication of ha-Measef and the local flowering of the haskalah. Moreover, I …

Unbound By Law: Association And Autonomy In The Early American Republic, Kevin Butterfield Jan 2010

Unbound By Law: Association And Autonomy In The Early American Republic, Kevin Butterfield

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation examines how the concept of voluntary membership evolved between the 1780s and the 1830s, a period in which men and women created thousands of groups seeking everything from fraternity to profit to social reform. Before observers foreign and domestic would begin to identify the voluntary association as a defining characteristic of post-Revolutionary American culture, Americans who organized and joined such groups had struggled for decades to determine what membership ought to look like, what rights and duties the act of joining should entail. By the time Alexis de Tocqueville famously noted in 1831 that Americans were "forever forming …

Creating A University: University Of North Florida Faculty And Staff Remember 35 Years, James B. Crooks

Creating a University: UNF Oral History Project

Reflecting upon the past thirty-five to forty years at the University of North Florida, one is struck by several themes which have emerged over time. One theme reflects an initial opposition to the new university which gradually changed over time. In the beginning, the Jacksonville community did not welcome UNF. At the time, the city was the largest in the nation without a state university. There were no alumni to support it and few wealthy benefactors. Trustees at Jacksonville University opposed its establishment. In the early 1980s, the legislative delegation voted to make UNF a branch of the University of …

Eugenic Sterilization In 20th Century Georgia: From Progressive Utilitarianism To Individual Rights, Stephen Michael Smith Jan 2010

Eugenic Sterilization In 20th Century Georgia: From Progressive Utilitarianism To Individual Rights, Stephen Michael Smith

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The science of human breeding, known as eugenics, flourished in America in the first half of the 20th century. The movement's chief proponents included wealthy philanthropists, politicians, doctors, and young middle-class reformers. Sterilization for the purposes of removing defective genes from society was a critical part of the eugenics movement. Progressive reformers used eugenic doctrines combined with utilitarian political philosophy to divest individuals of the natural right to procreation. Involuntary sterilization legislation spread throughout the United States after the 1927 Buck v. Bell Supreme Court decision that gave judicial approval to involuntary sterilization, regardless of due process and equal protection …

The Death Of Suspicion, Fabio Arcila Jr. Jan 2010

The Death Of Suspicion, Fabio Arcila Jr.

Scholarly Works

This article argues that neither the presumptive warrant requirement nor the presumptive suspicion requirement are correct. Though representative of the common law, they do not reflect the totality of our historic experience, which includes civil search practices. More importantly, modern developments - such as urban life and technological advancements, the rise of the regulatory state, and security concerns post-9/11 - have sufficiently changed circumstances so that these rules are not just unworkable now, they are demonstrably wrong. Worst of all, adhering to them has prevented us from formulating a more coherent Fourth Amendment jurisprudence. A new paradigm confronts us, in …
