The History Of Sioux County, J. W. Warnshuis
The History Of Sioux County, J. W. Warnshuis
Memoirs
In 1879, Rev. J. W. Warnshuis (1840-1901) wrote a series of recollections about early Sioux County history, which were published in serial form in the Dutch-language newspaper De Volksvriend. Warnshuis describes the settlement of the county, its geography, its leaders, and its religious and educational institutions. He writes extensively about the grasshopper plagues, explaining their life cycle and suggesting methods to prevent their destruction.
Warnshuis served as an area pastor in the Reformed Church and as a Bible instructor and minister at Northwestern Classical Academy.
Translated by Dr. Paul Vander Kooi.

The author is manifestly a true and wise lover of his country, fondly cherishing all Scottish associations, and feeling sore at heart the fact that the …

A Treatise On The Constitutional Limitations Which Rest Upon The Legislative Power Of The States Of The American Union, Thomas M. Cooley
Books
In the Preface to the first edition of this work. the author stated its purpose to be, to furnish to the practitioner and the student of the law such a presentation of elementary constitutional principles as should serve, with the aid of its references to judicial decisions, legal treatises, and historical events, as a convenient guide in the examination of questions respecting the constitutional limitations which rest upon the power of the several State legislatures. …

Limits To State Control Of Private Business, Thomas M. Cooley
Articles
The present purpose is to inquire whether, in the matter of the regulation of property rights and of business, legislation has not of late been occupying doubtful, possibly unconstitutional grounds. The discussion in the main must be limited to fundamental.-principles, aided by such light as legal and constitutional history may throw upon them, since the express provisions of the constitutions can give little assistance. They always contain the general guaranty of due process of law to life, liberty, and property, but in other particulars they for the most part leave protection to principles which have come from the common law. …

SNOW-STORM ON MOUNT SHASTA. 521 SNOW-STORM ON MOUNT SHASTA. MOUNT SHASTA, situated near the northern extremity of the Sierra Nevada, rises in solitary grandeur from a lightly sculptured lava plain, and maintains a far more impressive and commanding individuality than any other mountain within the limits of California. Go where yon will within a radius of from fifty to a hundred miles, there stands the colossal cone of X Ja U-C *- and age. A few tufaceous and brecciated beds are visible in eroded sections near the summit, but pumice and obsidian, usually so abundant in other volcanic regions throughout …

Dear Mr. Muir,
It has been such a long time since I received your good and kind letter that I am now almost ashamed to write an answer to it. And yet, although I have not answered it before this, the reason is not because I never thought about you. And I hardly think that it would be wisdom for me to try and excuse myself by hiding behind the refuge of no time. For I think that your answer would be that I might have so redeemed the time as to have …

1875.] WILD WOOL. 361 WILD WOOL. MORAL improvers have calls to preach. I have a friend who has a call to plow, and woe to the daisy sod or azalea thicket that falls under the savage redemption of his keen steel shares. Not content with the so-called subjugation of every terrestrial bog, rock, and moor-land, he would fain discover some method of reclamation applicable to the ocean and the sky, that in due calendar time they might be made to bud and blossom as the rose. Our efforts are of no avail when we seek to turn his attention to …

Yosemite Valley,
Jun. l0th, 1873.
Dear McChesney:
I have just finished a ramble through the handsome gardens of Ruskin that you gave me. Page after page is studded with flowers like a glacier meadow, and most of his chapters of hill and dale make a handsome landscape in spite of his numberless boundaries and human-carved rocks.
Few of our modern writers are so strikingly suggestive as Ruskin. His pungent steel-tempered sentences compel one to think, and his errors and absurdities are so clearly expressed that they do good rather than harm.
Ruskin …

Yosemite Valley January 9th 1873
Dear McChesney
I have just finished a ramble through the handsome Ruskin you have me Ruskin is great but not a great man, only a great ready-to-burst bud of a man, He is fettered & bounded though his chain is [longer?] His tether seems at times to break all together & he roams over all this world & what he takes to be the next, but after all, one never can feel that he is free-, his widest world, his highest sky is inclosed by a hard definite shell, making us think of a …

Kneeland.; 36 On the Glacieks of the Yosemite Valley. Samuel Kneeland. [February 21, By De. There have lately come into my possession some interesting, and I think, conclusive observations as to tlie former great extent of the glacier system of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in the neighborliood of the Yosemite Valley. They seem to throw light upon the causes Avhich formed the valley, or rather, by way of exclusion, upon the forces which, did not form it. Before calling your attention to these observations, which have recently been made by Mr. John Muir, a gentleman who has made the region …

This is about the limit of what I feel capable of doing for the public - the moiling squirming fog breathing public. But for my few friends I can do more because they already know the mtn harmonies & can catch the tones I gather for them though written in a few harsh & gravelly sentences. Here you demand an account of work accomplished for either friends or public, well this is all.
