Edward Henry Harriman BY JOHN muir Garden City New York DOUBLEDAY, PAGE & COMPANY 1918 ┬╗A7tf Edward Henry Harriman k F ALL the great builders ΓÇö the famous doers of things in this busy world ΓÇö none that I know of more ably and manfully did his appointed work than my friend Edward Henry Harriman. He was always ready and able. The greater his burdens, the more formidable the obstacles looming ahead of him, the greater was his enjoyment. In the case of Forbes et al. v. Chuoco Tiaco, decided by the Supreme Court of the Philippine Islands July 30, 1910, 8 Off. Gaz., p. 1778, some of the most interesting, important, and fundamental questions were presented and determined for the time being, but not settled, it is reasonably safe to say until passed upon by the Supreme Court of the United States. The questions involved were whether the Governor General of the Philippine Islands has the power to expel resident Chinese aliens without a hearing or an opportunity to be heard, and whether the Governor, if he exceeded …

Cordova, Alaska, August 16th, 1910.Mr. John Muir,Los Angeles, California; My dear Friend;- Yours of the 4th inst. came by the last mail and I answer by return boat. I am very sorry you cannot see your way clear to come and see the Miles and Childs Glaciers this season. From all the data I can gater I am satisfied that this is an exceptional season with them. There was a tremendous snow-fall last winter and the glaciers, especially Childs, is coming forward very rapidly. It is pushing the Copper River over to the opposite bank in spite of the high water …

Cordova, Alaska;June 14th, 1910.John Muir, Martinez, Cal.,My dear Friend,Yours of May 31st came by the last steamer and I reply by its return. I am sincerely sorry if I made a mistake in the facts of the climb. I aimed to be absolutely truthful in the story as far as my memory goes. And still, while acknowledging that you must be correct in the matter of our not crossing the glacier on the way up because--well, because you are you, I cannot make my recollection of it come other than as I told it. You should have felt at liberty …

I regret to [say?] that your attacks on Secretary Ballinger [include?] his attitude in the Hetch Hetchy matter, which I believe to be entirely correct and patriotic. I am convinced by Mr. Muir and by the recent report of my friend Director George Otis Smith of the U.
