That the practice of law and the administration of justice are under a fire of popular distrust and criticism of extraordinary intensity requires no proof. A fact of which there is evidence in numerous contemporary books, in almost every magazine, in the daily papers, in the remarks, or the questions, or it may be in the sneers, of one's friends, requires no further demonstration. The only questions of importance to be answered are to what extent this criticism and this distrust are well founded, what are the remedies for such defects as exist, and how and by whom should they …

PRESIDENT BUTLER of Columbia University is reported to have said in an address before the New York Chamber of Commerce in 1911, that "the limited liability corporation is the greatest single discovery of modem times, whether you judge it by its social, by its ethical, by its industrial, or, in the long run--after we understand it and know how to use it,--by its political, effects." 1

Dear Mr. Muir:
I have never got hold of anything more absorbingly interesting than these typewritten pages and they will be read as classics by posterity. But now I want you to take pity on my ignorance and tell me when and where the spelling of pigeon was changed to pidgeon, for it must be there has been an authoritative change or neither you nor the typewriter would use it. On page 40 you say "gave David and I" instead of "gave David and me", but on the whole it is excellently typed.

As perhaps you are aware, from time to time I have published, or rather sold in England, small editions of your books which have been issued by the Century Co. and other forms; for instance the volume entitled "The Mountains of California". My object in writing now is that in looking back though some old correspondence with a Mr. J. B. Miller of Dunbar, I notice a remark that you came from Scotland and as. I understand it are a native of Dunbar, I notice if this is correct? …

Allow me to call your attention to a gross misleading blunder on the inclosed cover of "My first summer on the Sierra". No flock of sheep in the Yosemite was ever in the valley since I first saw it. Please correct by striking out the words "in the Yosemite" and oblige

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)
GRABBING THE HETCH HETCHY. With very few exceptions, the newspapers of the country are protesting against the proposed gift of the Hetch Hetchy valley to the city of San Francisco for a water supply. "Of course the San Francisco newspapers champion the project, and so do a few others. But the- overwhelming sentiment, taking the country through, Is manifestly in opposition. ..This valley is now a national park, reserved for that purpose on account of its marvellous scenic beauty. It is the property of the nation, not of the. city Of San Francisco, nor the stale of California. The engineers …

If you print anything more, let it be the plan of the park which you had on the old illustrated pamphlet, with a brief (1)(2)(3) resume [diacritic] of the arguments on the back of it. I wonder if a postal card with the plan only & below it a statement = "HH Valley to be flooded. Two of three chief camping places withdrawn from public. Then at your right is a rocky shelf about 6 feet high and you climb up a slippery face to find up there a steep pool, not very large round, but full of beautiful specimens of sea weed, and clean caller saut water.
