Martin Van Buren And The Internal Improvements Question, Paul R. Alwine
Martin Van Buren And The Internal Improvements Question, Paul R. Alwine
Student Work
The purpose of this study is to reflect the impact of Martin Van Buren exerted upon the much debated question of Federal responsibility for financing road and canal construction. Van Buren's early life of hardship and his struggle to lift himself, virtually by hid "bootstraps", from the ranks of mediocrity is omitted. Emphasis has been directed to service in the New York Senate, the United States Senat, Secretary of State under Andrew Jackson, Vice-President and as President. The Future President of the United States (1837-1941) served as an advocate for the various forces opposing the trend towards greater Federal control …

J.C. Denious: Public Servant And State Promoter Of Southwestern Kansas, Larry N. Lane
Fort Hays Studies Series
This biographical study is primarily concerned with the political, economic, and social activities and interests of Mr. Denious while he served in the capacity of State Senator and Lieutenant Governor. In the course of state growth and development, it is unfortunate that important contributions by certain dedicated public servants are little known or remembered. In a small way, it is the purpose of this study to help rectify this situation.

The United States And Great Britain On The African Slave Trade, 1842-1862., Richard J. Bilger
The United States And Great Britain On The African Slave Trade, 1842-1862., Richard J. Bilger
Student Work
The African slave trade to the United States lasted for over two hundred and forty years, but it was in the course of the last twenty years from 1842-62 that the United States and Great Britain became mutally involved in its suppression. During this period, the United States and Great Britain emerged as the prime movers in the suppression of the slave trade. In the years just prior to and during the Civil War the two nations moved from an attitude of discord to one of cooperation. It is therefore the purpose of this thesis to present a drama of …

The Alternative Amendment Process: Some Observations, Paul G. Kauper
The Alternative Amendment Process: Some Observations, Paul G. Kauper
Michigan Law Review
The alternative method of formal amendment of the Constitution raises unresolved questions of interpretation. As a contribution to the formulation of procedures for the implementation of this method Senator Ervin has introduced a bill dealing with the matter in considerable detail. In dealing with the subject I propose to discuss not only the convention procedure provided in article V, and in this connection point up some considerations respecting Senator Ervin's bill, but also some basic questions relating to the formal amendment process and the role assumed by the Supreme Court in the process of constitutional change.

Article V: The Comatose Article Of Our Living Constitution?, Robert G. Dixon Jr.
Michigan Law Review
Capacity for steady--even startling-development and relative incapacity for formal change, are twin features of American constitutionalism often noticed but seldom analyzed conjointly. Even the most stalwart supporters of the status quo do not want an unamendable Constitution, but disagreement as to how change should be effected, and the scope of it, runs deep. Indeed, this is the central problem of Marbury v. Madison. That case was the effective innovator of judicial review, our "real" system for developmental constitutionalism. Interestingly, it also was one of the quite rare instances when a seemingly simple constitutional text was at issue (scope of Supreme …
