Aliens And Equal Protection: Why Not The Right To Vote?, Gerald M. Rosberg May 1977

Aliens And Equal Protection: Why Not The Right To Vote?, Gerald M. Rosberg

Michigan Law Review

A constitutional right of at least some aliens to vote does not seem to me at all unthinkable. Throughout much of the nineteenth century and part of the twentieth, aliens enjoyed the right to vote in a great many states. The states that extended the franchise to aliens plainly did not believe that they were acting under constitutional compulsion. But given our present understanding of the mission of the equal protection clause, much can now be said in defense of such a constitutional right. My purpose here is to outline the case that might be made for the right of …

The Formative Years, Lee W. Lenz

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Letters exchanged between Susanna Bixby Bryant, the founder of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, and several leading southern California botanists and horticulturalists (especially Ernest Braunton, Willis Linn Jepson, and Theodore Payne) in 1925–1926 document her steps toward creating a botanical garden devoted to the native California flora.

In The Beginning, Lee W. Lenz

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

This article traces the early history of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, California, starting ca. 1867 with the Portolà Expedition. The expedition was the first to record the site where the botanic garden later came to be located, in Santa Ana Canyon, northeastern Orange County. Successive changes in land ownership eventually led to the Bixby family purchasing the land in 1875. Susanna Bixby Bryant, the founder of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, acquired the land in 1925.

Mathematics In America: The First Hundred Years, Judith V. Grabiner Jan 1977

Mathematics In America: The First Hundred Years, Judith V. Grabiner

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

There are two main questions I shall discuss in this paper. First, why was American mathematics so weak from 1776 to 1876? Second, and much more important, how did what happened from 1776-1876 produce an American mathematics respectable by international standards by the end of the nineteenth century? We will see that the "weakness" -at least as measured by the paucity of great names- co-existed with the active building both of mathematics education and of a mathematical community which reached maturity in the 1890's.

Survey Of The History, Development, And Medical Uses Of Chinese Acupuncture, Kendell G. Hansen Jan 1977

Survey Of The History, Development, And Medical Uses Of Chinese Acupuncture, Kendell G. Hansen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

It is difficult to pick up a magazine, medical or otherwise, that does not include an article about the Chinese method of diagnosis and treatment known as acupuncture. This ancient technique, about which there is so much current interest, is reputed to have originated nearly 30 centuries ago when a Chinese warrior emperor made the observation that certain arrow wounds caused pain to disappear in remote parts of the body.

During World War II, the new China of the Red Army rediscovered the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of wounded or sick soldiers during combat conditions. Today, Chinese medical …

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

In the years 1960–1977, Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden fully embraces its role as teaching institution and as advocate and guardian of the native California flora. Simon, and Robert F. Thorne.

The Anatomy Of A Conqueror: The Image And Reality Of Lucius Aemilius Paullus, William Reiter Jan 1977

The Anatomy Of A Conqueror: The Image And Reality Of Lucius Aemilius Paullus, William Reiter

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The present study is largely historiographical in nature, its principal aim being a better understanding of Lucius Aemilius Paullus, consul of 182 and 168, and one of the crucial figures in Rome’s conquest of the Mediterranean. Paullus is most often represented as a man of pristine virtue and philhellenic persuasion, and his resulting image has clouded both the man and the events in which he was involved. In order to obtain a less biased view, careful consideration is given to the treatment of Paullus as found in Polybius, Livy, and Plutarch; and, finally, the attempt is made to provide a …

The Effects Of The Norman Conquest On Anglo-Saxon Aristocracy, Cynthia L. Puryear Dec 1976

The Effects Of The Norman Conquest On Anglo-Saxon Aristocracy, Cynthia L. Puryear

Honors Theses

In 1066, William the Conqueror successfully invaded England. He established himself as king and began to implement his policies for complete control over the subjugated territory. The Norman invasion did not involve a large influx of people: but, rather a conquest by a man who acquired the country for himself and distributed the land to his followers. The old English aristocracy, mainly composed of the king's thegns, virtually disappeared with the conquest and was replaced by a new aristocracy.

The near disappearance of the English aristocrats and their replacement by Normans holding land in return for military service was an …

Nebraska And Rural Electrification Through 1940, Roberta K. Barndt Dec 1976

Nebraska And Rural Electrification Through 1940, Roberta K. Barndt

Student Work

Since Nebraska is primarily an agricultural state, the struggle to bring electricity to its rural areas played an important role in the long-standing battle to decrease the disparity between living standards in rural and urban America. During the first two decades of the twentieth century, telephones and automobiles lessened rural isolation while increased utilization of tractors and other technological innovations rendered farm labor less tedious. Nevertheless, without electricity, the one modern innovation that more than any other brought comfort and convenience within the reach of the urban masses, living and working conditions on the farm remained comparatively primitive. Farm families …

Jus Non Scriptum And The Reliance Principle, Stanley L. Paulson Nov 1976

Jus Non Scriptum And The Reliance Principle, Stanley L. Paulson

Michigan Law Review

On the Continent, a general theory of customary law has been developed-what I term the Continental theory; it identifies formation and validity as the central issues in the analysis of custom and customary law. Yet the Continental theory, notwithstanding its longevity and continuing favorable reception among international lawyers, is ridden with problems. In particular, as I argue in the following section, the theory fails for want of a coherent position on the formation issue. In the course of my argument, I suggest a classification of the norms of customary law in terms of a generic category broader in scope than …
