Alien Rights In The United States In Wartime, W C. Hunter
Alien Rights In The United States In Wartime, W C. Hunter
Michigan Law Review
The large number of aliens in the United States presents one of the many problems with which the Government has had to deal in the present war. Technically every immigrant from Germany and Austria-Hungary who has not taken out papers of naturalization and who therefor still owes allegiance to the Fatherland is an enemy alien. But while the great majority of these aliens are naturally sympathetic with German war aims, or at least are not ready to give their wholehearted support to the Allies, they are not a source of danger to the United States. Only a small section have …

Reminiscence Of John Muir By Griswold, M.S., M. S. Griswold
Reminiscence Of John Muir By Griswold, M.S., M. S. Griswold
Reminiscences about John Muir (1915-c.1923)
Waukesha, Wis. March 30, 1917. Prof. William Frederic Bade, Boston, Mass. Dear Sir: Conforming to your courteous request made to me in yours of the 20th instant, I cheerfully submit the following as some of my recollections respecting John Muir, the late great naturalist of California. My acquaintance with him personally was in connection with my college life at the State University, at Madison, Wisconsin. It began about April 1, 1861, at which time I returned to my classes at Madison, having by reason of ill health been home on my father's farm during the previous year. On my return …

Reminiscences about John Muir (1915-c.1923)
JOHN MUIR ADDRESS DELIVERED BY CHARLES R. VAN HISE UPON THE OCCASION OF THE UNVEILING OF A BRONZE BUST OF JOHN MUIR BY THE SCULPTOR C. S. PIETRO THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN Music Hall, December 6, 1916, JOHN MUIR It is as a human being ever striving upward that I would portray John Muir. From his early boyhood to his old age this spirit dominated him. As a child in Scotland, at every opportunity, in spite of parental prohibitions, and notwithstanding the certainty of punishment upon his return, he would steal away to the green fields and the seashore, eagerly …

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)
ΓÇö*s?'l% 120 Trout Family History In due time, when the wheat crop was harvested and known to be by far the finest and most abundant of all the previous years and the price also good, you may be sure there was a thankful and happy people, who never afterwards had a renewal of any thing approaching that trying year's experience. From the foregoing the reason will be manifest why I was diverted from my preaching purpose formed at Williamsville. Paul was under necessity to preach. My necessity lay another way. I was the oldest son and my father's namesake, so …

Riverby, West Park, N.Y.November 11,1914My dear Mr. Muir,Here I am living in the little cottage at "Riverby", formerly occupied by Mr. Burroughs's son and family, and just a stone's throw from the big house where Mr. and Mrs. Burroughs live, and they take their meals with me. It is charming here by the river, and is even prettier than my little chalet at Pelham where you came for that flying visit on J. B's seventieth birthday. We heard this summer that you were not very well, then later we heard that you were better, but of late we have heard …

[1]Menlo Park, 2 June, 1914My dear Maecenas:Your kind word is cheering, & would be more so but for the disquieting hint about your health. You are most kind to think still of going with me for a short sojourn in the wilderness. You would find me a poor camper & woodsman. I have generally cont[illegible]ed to have somebody with me to do the work.-I enclose for you a page I have comp[illegible]ed with infinite [illegible]ortions & variations. Its half scriptural, half [illegible]ic arcadian charm would appeal to you --- if I have communicated it.I am getting [illegible]. My doctor tells …

Menlo Park, 12 April. 1914Dear Friend, If I have shabbily failed to write, it was not thoughtlessness, but because I wanted to write too much, and also because I've [really?] had little [chance?] to communicate. I just want you to know that I think of you fondly every day; that I am pushing ahead in the spirit [illegible] the part who says that"tasks in hours of insight willedMay be in hours of gloom fulfilled!I have been in many ways too absorbed to write to any publisher yet & have little idea what arrangements can be made.
