Preserving The Progressive Spirit In A Conservative Time: The Joint Reform Efforts Of Justice Brandeis And Professor Frankfurter, 1916-1933, David W. Levy, Bruce Allen Murphy Aug 1980

Preserving The Progressive Spirit In A Conservative Time: The Joint Reform Efforts Of Justice Brandeis And Professor Frankfurter, 1916-1933, David W. Levy, Bruce Allen Murphy

Michigan Law Review

On January 28, 1916, President Wilson sent the name of Louis D. Brandeis to the Senate for confirmation as a Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Wilson's act surprised many Americans and sparked one of the bitterest confirmation struggles in the history of the Republic. The nomination and the confirmation that followed also created a painful and highly personal dilemma for the new Justice. This dilemma led Brandeis to a private arrangement that opened an unusual and revealing chapter in the story of the extra judicial activities of American justices. Even more important, the arrangement constitutes a noteworthy episode …

The Development Of The Omaha Municipal Airfield, 1924-1930, Leslie R. Valentine May 1980

The Development Of The Omaha Municipal Airfield, 1924-1930, Leslie R. Valentine

Student Work

In 1920, American aviation was still in its infancy, a description applicable to every aspect of the industry. The airplanes of this period were delicate, curious, contraptions. Still, these fragile craft, dwarfed by the magnitude of today’s ships, were amazingly efficient, agile, and thrilling methods of transportation. Few realized then what importance these airplanes would have in the future.

Alcohol Control And Native Alaskans — From The Russians To Statehood: The Early Years — Alcohol Control In Village Alaska, Stephen Conn Apr 1980

Alcohol Control And Native Alaskans — From The Russians To Statehood: The Early Years — Alcohol Control In Village Alaska, Stephen Conn

Reports

A persistent thread throughout the legal history of Alaska since Russian contact with the Great Land until the present has been deployment of available legal resources to curb drinking by Alaska Indians and Eskimos. The long-held social belief on the part of white colonialists and government agents that Alaska Natives could not drink and became wild persons when intoxicated was translated into an unrelenting legal practice of focusing law and available legal resources on control of Native drinking and prosecution of those who supplied Natives with drink. / Even during four periods of territory-wide prohibition, the prohibition was enforced against …

The Confederate Defense Of Mobile, 1861-1865. (Volumes I-Ii)., Arthur William Bergeron Jr Jan 1980

The Confederate Defense Of Mobile, 1861-1865. (Volumes I-Ii)., Arthur William Bergeron Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The people of Mobile, Alabama, supported the secession of their state from the Union in January 1861, and thousands of her able-bodied men served in the Confederate army from 1861 to 1865. Recognizing the city's strategic importance as a port and major railroad center connecting the eastern and western sections of the new nation, the Confederate government moved quickly to provide adequate defenses for Mobile. Confederate soldiers occupied and began to strengthen Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines, which guarded the main channels leading into Mobile Bay. The Confederate Navy Department converted several steamers into gunboats and began construction of four …

Markets And Merchants: Economic Diversification In Colonial Virginia, 1700-1775, Peter Victor Bergstrom Jan 1980

Markets And Merchants: Economic Diversification In Colonial Virginia, 1700-1775, Peter Victor Bergstrom

Doctoral Dissertations

While the literature detailing the intricacies of the colonial tobacco trade is extensive, and often quite persuasive, its conclusion that Virginia's economy began and ended in the production of tobacco is misleading. Virginia's expansion into previously unsettled lands, and the tremendous increase in the size of its labor force during the first three quarters of the eighteenth century did produce a gigantic growth in the tobacco trade, but it had other effects as well. Grain and meat products along with naval stores and iron contributed little to the colony's economic output in 1701, yet by 1774 they accounted for better …

The Transplantation And Transformation Of The English Shire In America: Essex County, Massachusetts, 1630-1768, Harold Arthur Pinkham Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

This study of Essex County, Massachusetts, emanates from a dissatisfaction with the disjointed and segmented histories available for the counties of colonial Massachusetts. Because little effort has been made to examine towns systematically, to place localities within the context of the larger.

A Drift Towards Nostalgia: The River Trip As Journal Of A Changing View Of American Wilderness, Richard D. Davis Jan 1980

A Drift Towards Nostalgia: The River Trip As Journal Of A Changing View Of American Wilderness, Richard D. Davis

Master's Theses

As early as the 1820s and 1830s, observers of the American scene, such as George Catlin, John James Audubon, and Alexis de Tocqueville, were expressing misgivings over the rapid settlement of the American West. In their concern over the passing of pristine landscapes and native cultures was a note of nostalgia for an earlier time, the era of exploration, whose journals echoed the freshness of discovery and spoke of the beauty and inexhaustible promise of the New World. The elegiac tone has become more explicit in our own time. In the works of twentieth century writers is seen a haunting …
