"They Fought Splendidly!": The Struggle For Port Hudson (Civil War, Louisiana, Military)., Lawrence Lee Hewitt

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the Confederate occupation of Port Hudson, Louisiana, and the Union efforts to capture the bastion during the period August 1862-July 1863. That waterway facilitated the east-west flow of manpower, munitions and foodstuffs between the heart of the Confederacy and the Trans-Mississippi. The United States government recognized the importance of this supply-line and made control of the Mississippi River one of its primary …

The Jury, Seditious Libel And The Criminal Law, Thomas A. Green Jan 1984

The Jury, Seditious Libel And The Criminal Law, Thomas A. Green

Book Chapters

The seditious libel trials of the eighteenth century constitute an important chapter in the history of freedom of the press and the growth of democratic government. While much has been written about the trials and about the administration of the criminal law in eighteenth-century England, little has been said about the relationship between the libel prosecutions and the more pervasive and long-standing problems of the criminal law. We have perhaps gone too far in positing-or simply assuming-a separation between political high misdemeanors and common-run felony cases such as homicide and theft. For there were points of contact between the two: …

Proposal To Establish A Public Middle School Academy, Leon Lederman Oct 1983

Proposal To Establish A Public Middle School Academy, Leon Lederman

Documents

The objectives of the Academy would be to accept gifted high school juniors and, in three years, provide students completely prepared to enter college as juniors.

It is proposed that the school be very strong in math-science, but it does not take too much thought to realize that it must be almost as strong in English, Social Studies and the Humanities.
