Susan Mehrtens' Note:
We have in this tape the recollections of one of the most prolific authors in the field of mouse mutants, an indefatigable co-worker of Margaret Dickey, Margaret Green and currently, Muriel Davison. Full of scientific terms, this tape reveals clearly Lane's thorough absorption in the field to which she has devoted nearly the last forty years of her life. Toward the end of this tape, Lane alludes to Earl Green's sexist attitude, which other women have also mentioned to me on and off tape. Lane also waxes eloquently here about her efforts to establish a hiera'rchy within …

The Sisters And The Soldiers, Virginia Walcott Beauchamp Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
The Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph’s Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland ministered to both sides before and after the Battle of Gettysburg. This was amid expectations that the conflict would destroy their house and challenges in maintaining their students’ safety. Before the battle, the sisters provided food and a place to rest for the Union soldiers and the same for the Confederates after the Union army departed. They clothed, fed, and nursed members of each force after the battle. Such charity provided an antidote to anti-Catholic prejudice, which helped the sisters themselves when they were the defendants in a spurious …

Environmental Litigation In Historical Perspective, Samuel P. Hays
Environmental Litigation In Historical Perspective, Samuel P. Hays
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
During the past several decades, litigation has played a major role in the attempt by citizens to realize environmental objectives. Its impact has been elaborated extensively in the vast array of writing in law journals as well as in the cases themselves. Most analyses have focused on specialized subjects of either substantive policy or legal procedure. In this brief Essay I attempt a more comprehensive overview involving two background factors- the growth of environmental values since World War II and the response of governmental institutions to the resulting demands placed upon them. Among these institutions were the courts. Their role …

American Studies: Civil War, The Correlation Of Literature And History Studies In High School, Arlene Kellogg
Theses
Courses in history can be nothing but memorizing facts, and courses in literature can be writing without roots . The author proposes a correlated curriculum for high school American literature and history, specifically in the Civil War time frame to change this situation.
The purpose of this curriculum, "American Studies: Civil War," is to make the history of our country live for the student, giving him/her a feeling for the mood of the times and motivating him/her to become politically active as a young citizen.
To validate the proposal, the author has interviewed experts in the fields of literature, history …

In establishing a' new kind of educational institution which is heavily dependent on public funding, it is incumbent to describe the goals and the means as clearly as possible. We do this here in several steps: We define the general objectives, the specifications and finally, the general philosophy.
