The Firing Of Admiral Denfeld: An Early Casualty Of The Military Unification Process, David Bruce Dittmer
The Firing Of Admiral Denfeld: An Early Casualty Of The Military Unification Process, David Bruce Dittmer
Student Work
The defense establishment of the United States underwent many changes after its magnifent victory in World War II. Budget cuts and a rapid demobilization that President Truman descrived as "disintegration" shruck the Armed Forces to less that a quarter of their wartime strength in less than two year, just as the world's geopolitical landscape was hardening into the bi-polar relationship of the Cold War. Adding to the resulting confusion was Truman's successful effort to unify the three services in an overarching National Military Establishment which eventually became the Department of Defense... This thesis attempts to show that Admiral Denfeld's Congressional …

Research Manuscript Series
Broad open spaces, beautiful roses, and ancient trees today characterize the Santa Clara University campus and the surrounding tree shaded neighborhood. Along those quiet streets of the Old Quad many students and area residents go for walks in the City's relatively clean air. Beyond the sound of jets taking off from the nearby airport or the occasional wail of a siren Santa Clara is a tranquil place, seemingly unchanged for decades. Yet, this is a deceiving view as it is a community that has radically changed since the end of World War II. Over the past half century, Santa Clara …

The Animal Research Controversy: Protest, Process & Public Policy, Andrew N. Rowan, Franklin M. Loew, Joan C. Weer
Experimentation Collection
The controversy today regarding the use of animals in research appears on the surface to be a strongly polarized struggle between the scientific community and the animal protection movement. However, there is a wide range of opinions and philosophies on both sides. Mistrust between the factions has blossomed while communication has withered. Through the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, the animal movement grew in numbers and financial resources, and developed much greater public recognition and political clout. The research community paid relatively little attention to the animal movement for much of this period but, alarmed by several public relations coups …

"Wherein Lies Personal Identity": The Reception Of Locke And Richardson And The Language Of Self In The Letters And Journals Of Exceptional Eighteenth Century American Women, Carolann O'Malley Davis
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation adds a new chapter to the history of the social revolution that accompanied the American Revolution, specifically the revolt against patriarchalism. It is my contention that exceptional women initiated a private revolution to gain recognition of a new personal identity. This private revolution led to the rejection of the system of private government of man over woman, patriarchalism.
I identified seven women, Eliza Lucas Pinckney, Abigail Adams, Esther Edwards Burr, Mercy Otis Warren, Eliza Southgate Bowne, Anne Willing Bingham and Anne Home Shippen, who were especially representative of a network of women who developed a self-consciousness. For these …
