Dinner In The City: Reclaiming The Female Half Of History: Christine De Pisan's The Book Of The City Of Ladies And Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party, Marsha M. Pippenger
Master of Humanities Capstone Projects
Although separated by more than 500 years, Christine de Pisan's "The Book of the City of Ladies" (1405) and Judy Chicago's "The Dinner Party" (1979) were created to validate and defend women and women's achievements and to move them from the periphery of the historical canon to the center, alongside accomplished men of history. Both are responses to misogynist beliefs and texts of their times. In this essay I present the historical basis of misogyny as well as events that led the two women to create their pieces. I illuminate the parallels between "The Book of the City of Ladies" …
Rachid Boudjedra binds ingeniously fictional and real history and, beyond historic forgery, this author succeeds in transcribing the authentic events of his country. This article exposes one of the novelist’s historic conceptions through which the reader apprehends History : detailed visions alternate and blend with globalizing visions. For this author, nothing must be abandoned or put aside; by analyzing his novelistic writing, a fictional mosaic, we will come to understand his perspective on History.

The Development Of Southern Association For College Student Affairs: Setting A New Course For Success, Bobbie Jean Wescovich-Mann
Theses and Dissertations
There have been numerous studies conducted concerning how various businesses, management groups and library science organizations address the preservation of their history, the development of goals, the evaluation of those goals and how these lead to the positive development of their organization. However, to date, the researcher has been unable to locate research that has been conducted to assess how Student Affairs associations preserve their history and how they evaluate the effectiveness of their goals or even if they do evaluate their goals. Based on research conducted through in-depth interviews, review of the data raises questions regarding the way SACSA …

Dermatology 75 Years Ago., Lawrence Parish, Joseph A Witkowski
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
It seems that the practicing dermatologist in 2007 is being attacked on all fronts. The Food and Drug Administration has mandated a cumbersome program for monitoring isotrentinoin usage, its analogue barely comes under scrutiny. iPledge is just a plain nightmare. The acumen of the board certified dermatologist is being challenged by Maintenance of Certification proposals because other specialties are doing it; yet, the neighborhood pharmacist is unhampered in dispensing all sorts of advice about treatment. The insurance clerk thrives on denying medication, prescribed by the physician, using flawed reasoning or else suggesting that a ten days’ supply of medicine should …
The Convenient Alliance: President Reagan And Pope John Paul Ii, Cold Warriors, Tighe P. Flatley
The Convenient Alliance: President Reagan And Pope John Paul Ii, Cold Warriors, Tighe P. Flatley
Senior Honors Projects
Historians and non-scholars alike have long regarded the work of President Reagan and Pope John Paul II to be a tremendous force in helping to end the Cold War. In 1992, Time Magazine cited the relationship as a “Holy Alliance”, a political partnering of two men who, after surviving separate assassination attempts merely six weeks apart, saw their role in global politics as a divine signal to promote the free world and take down communism internationally. By the time the President and the Pope first met at the Vatican in 1982, the two were privately discussing Cold War politics. They …

A History Of Urban Coyote Problems, Robert M. Timm, Rex O. Baker
A History Of Urban Coyote Problems, Robert M. Timm, Rex O. Baker
Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
We summarize previously published information on coyote attacks on humans in North America. This problem has developed primarily in urban and suburban areas of southern California since the early 1970s, and the frequency of attacks and other human safety incidents is increasing. Similar attacks are now known from at least 18 states in addition to California and from 4 Canadian provinces, with the majority of attacks occurring since the early 1990s. We review early explorers’ and settlers’ accounts of coyotes in the Los Angeles area, as well as development of coyote control programs during the 20th century. We also describe …
Dorothea Dix : Student, Reformer And Crusader, Megan Kokontis
Dorothea Dix : Student, Reformer And Crusader, Megan Kokontis
Constructing the Past
Dix began her prison reform work by visiting prisons across the country, and two systems emerged as the models of reform. Dix sought a total reform of the system, of both its physical structures, and more importantly, its programs and systems. In order to have a better understanding of the prison systems, Dix traveled throughout the country, visiting prisons, meeting with wardens and evaluating the various systems for their effectiveness. From 1841 to 1843, she visited state prisons, evaluating their respective benefits. Despite her efforts to remain objective, her opinions were always colored by her deeply held religious convictions. Finally, …

Property, Contracts, And Politics, Mark Tushnet
Property, Contracts, And Politics, Mark Tushnet
Michigan Law Review
Rebecca Scott is a historian, not an economist. Describing how a dispute over a mule's ownership was resolved, Professor Scott reproduces a receipt two claimants left when they took the mule from the plantation whose manager claimed it as well (p. 185). By contrast, analyzing property relations in the pre-Civil War American South, economic historian Jenny Wahl observes, "[E]conomic historians tend to [use] ... frequency tables, graphs, and charts." The differences in visual aids to understanding indicate the various ways historians and economists approach a single topic-the relation between markets and politics, the latter defined to include the deployment of …

Presidential Campaign Songs Of The Progressive Era : The Political Language Of Personality, Luke Gullickson
Presidential Campaign Songs Of The Progressive Era : The Political Language Of Personality, Luke Gullickson
Constructing the Past
The Progressive Era’s emphasis on political personalities stands in contrast to most other eras in American history, including our own, and the resultant political discourse encouraged a rich and charismatic political atmosphere. The presidential campaign songs from this era are a testament to this atmosphere. Since these songs were written during the campaigns, for the specific purpose of swaying voters, they can be seen as cultural constructs and as political propaganda. They provide insight into the political atmosphere of the era: into the language that was used to discuss the issues and the rhetoric that was effective at mobilizing public …
Sumptuary Legislation And The Fabric Construction Of National Identity In Early Modern England, Rachel Shulman
Sumptuary Legislation And The Fabric Construction Of National Identity In Early Modern England, Rachel Shulman
Constructing the Past
The sumptuary legislation is quite specific, outlining exactly which fabrics were permitted for each social class and in what types of clothing. For example, Elizabeth’s 1562 proclamation asserted, “None shall wear in his apparel any silk of the color purple, cloth of gold tissue, but only the King, Queen . . . except dukes and marquises who may wear in doublets and sleeveless coats cloth of gold of tissue not exceeding £5 the yard, and purple in mantles of the Garter.” The language of exclusion reflects the common conceptions of social hierarchy in early modern England. The most lavish accoutrements …
