Forgotten Soldiers: Burials On The Texas Frontier And Shifting Perceptions Of Military Interment, Anthony Schienschang Ii

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

This research examines the interrelation between civilian and military burials on the Texas frontier in the 1850s with further discussion about the drivers for changing military burial practices. A soldier’s life on the Texas frontier is briefly outlined along with some of the difficulties facing service members living in border forts. Special focus is placed on examining the socio-economic differences between officers and enlisted personnel, as well as the recording of deaths on the frontier. As a case study, the condition of the proposed location of the Fort Gates cemetery is explored and brief analysis of data gathered from the …

Doing Their Bit: Children And Young Adults Fight The War, Marvin Mayer, Vicki Betts Jan 2018

Doing Their Bit: Children And Young Adults Fight The War, Marvin Mayer, Vicki Betts

Presentations and Publications

When one thinks of war, horrible images of death and destruction come to mind. Among those images, children frequently are shown as victims. But there are many ways children can be affected by war, even when they are thousands of miles away from the actual conflict. This article exposes some of those effects on children in Smith County, Texas.

Plant Endemism And Geoendemic Areas Of Utah, Stanley L. Welsh, Nephi Duane Atwood Jan 2018

Plant Endemism And Geoendemic Areas Of Utah, Stanley L. Welsh, Nephi Duane Atwood

Books by Faculty of the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum

Abstract

This summary of Utah's plant endemics is based large part on a paper dealing with differences and similarities of the Great Basin and Colorado Plateau presented by Welsh to a meeting of the Range Society of America at Montrose, Colorado, in May of 2004, and a second presentation to the Colorado Native Plant Society in September of 2007. Discussed in those presentations were brief considerations of topography and geomorphology, geology, hydrology, vegetation, migrational aspects, endemics and disjuncts, and peculiar habitats of plants in the Great Basin of Utah and in the Colorado Plateau. This work expands on those considerations …

Dis/Inheritance : Love, Grief, And Genealogy In Faulkner, Daisuke Kiriyama Jan 2018

Dis/Inheritance : Love, Grief, And Genealogy In Faulkner, Daisuke Kiriyama

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation is devoted to the close examination of two novels of William Faulkner, Absalom, Absalom! and Go Down, Moses. I find in them the repression and return of prohibited emotions and a consistent pattern of “the race between the pursuing white man and the fleeing black man.” I explore how these are related to the Faulknerian conception of time and the establishment and disruption of the conventional Southern notions of race, class, gender, and sexuality. The white man’s pursuit, performed in various forms, ultimately aims to prove his mastery and masculinity, racial superiority, or everything that whiteness means to …

Narratives Of Place And Land: Teaching Indigenous Histories In Australian And New Zealand Teacher Education, Richard Manning, Neil Harrison Jan 2018

Narratives Of Place And Land: Teaching Indigenous Histories In Australian And New Zealand Teacher Education, Richard Manning, Neil Harrison

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This article offers a trans-Tasman critique of approaches to the teaching of history in New Zealand and Australia. Taking knowledge out of place and time and presenting it in textbooks is a conflicted task for schooling in both countries. The disembodiment of knowledge in history books has led students to the proclamation that the teaching of history in schools is ‘boring’ and irrelevant to their lives. The authors seek a way out of this dilemma in proposing that the teaching of Indigenous history in schools must recognise that Indigenous historical narratives are intimately tied to the ecologies of places – …

An Embodied Analysis Of Humankind's Development And History As Viewed Through Our Art And Theatre, Mikayla Burr Jan 2018

An Embodied Analysis Of Humankind's Development And History As Viewed Through Our Art And Theatre, Mikayla Burr

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

Our theatre practices are just as diverse and rich as everything else in our history and often are products of the climate in which they are created. Medieval European churches utilized the stage to convey their truths to peasants and church services can be described as nothing less than a spectacle. Complete with flying set and prop pieces and grand entrances with echoing chants made for quite a sight. In this way theatre was a teaching tool. In Native American ritual practices, the dances and chanting were often meant to bring upon a literal climate change, asking the spirits to …

Adam Smith On The Future Of Experimental Evolution And Economics, Maria Pia Paganelli Jan 2018

Adam Smith On The Future Of Experimental Evolution And Economics, Maria Pia Paganelli

Economics Faculty Research

Experimental evolution is difficult to apply to humans because of the need to study possible changes over many generations. A similar method, though, may see history as a substitute for experiments. The 18th century economist Adam Smith uses methods compatible with the logic of experimental evolution, through the assumption of human homogeneity and the study of history, to explain endogenous variations of preferences and institutions.

The Birth Of The Movement To Prohibit The Unauthorized Practice Of Law, Laurel A. Rigertas Jan 2018

The Birth Of The Movement To Prohibit The Unauthorized Practice Of Law, Laurel A. Rigertas

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Despite its omnipresence in the field, there is no comprehensive history of the legal profession's effort to prohibit the unauthorized practice of law ("UPL"), by persons or entities who do not have a license to engage in such work. Drawing on original historical research, this article provides the most comprehensive view, to date, of the birth of the modem movement to prohibit the unauthorized practice of law. While bar associations' efforts to prohibit the unauthorized practice of law exploded nationwide in the 1930s, they sowed the seeds for the movement during the several decades preceding the Great Depression. Focusing on …

Bas Bleus, Divorceuses, Deceitful Prostitutes Or “Live Allegories” Of Change? Parisian Working-Class Women And The Revolution Of 1848, Natasha A. Gardonyi Jan 2018

Bas Bleus, Divorceuses, Deceitful Prostitutes Or “Live Allegories” Of Change? Parisian Working-Class Women And The Revolution Of 1848, Natasha A. Gardonyi

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis acts as both a history of the roles that Parisian working-class women played as writers, society members and insurgents during the revolutionary year of 1848, and an analysis of why they were vilified in the press as bas-bleus, divorceuses, deceitful prostitutes and more extensively as the individuals responsible for the failure of the revolution. It argues that women became “live allegories” of the changes that Paris was experiencing in the first half of the nineteenth century, particularly when a small minority of women radicalized from late April to June. These women galvanized anxieties that men and the upper …

The Flying Tigers: Transnational Memories Of A World War Ii Collaboration, Kaho Yasuda Jan 2018

The Flying Tigers: Transnational Memories Of A World War Ii Collaboration, Kaho Yasuda

Honors Papers

In 1941, under the leadership of General Claire Lee Chennault, the Flying Tigers- a volunteer group of fighter pilots and crewmen from the United States- traveled to Southwestern China to support the Chinese Nationalist military in their resistance against the Japanese. How do the United States and China remember the Flying Tigers, and how is the memory shaped by domestic and international politics? Drawing from media coverage, museums, popular media, and memoirs, this thesis traces the evolution of the memories of the Flying Tigers in the U.S. and China from 1941 to the present. I argue that from the war …

Understanding The Geologic Record In A Seventh-Day Adventist Perspective, Samuel A. Abdala Jan 2018

Understanding The Geologic Record In A Seventh-Day Adventist Perspective, Samuel A. Abdala

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

In his classical collection of biographies titled Parallel Lives, Plutarch tells of the mischievous Procrustes, whose defeat was counted among the feats of the Athenian hero Theseus. Procrustes had the curious habit of inviting any passerby traveler to rest at his abode, only to meticulously impose upon his guest the requirement that the guest be made to proportionally fit the bed that he had provided for him. If the guest were too short, he would be stretched (needless to say, to his death) until the body met the bed’s length. If the guest were too tall, he would be executed …

The Leap In Place: Rethinking Key Concepts In The History Of Composition And The Return Of Lore., David Stubblefield Jan 2018

The Leap In Place: Rethinking Key Concepts In The History Of Composition And The Return Of Lore., David Stubblefield

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation attempts to affirm a key set of practical terms in order to guide Composition Pedagogy. These terms include error, language, voice, teacher neutrality, and rationality. In recent years, many of these terms have been discredited theoretically; however, they remain dominant in textbooks and in our actual teaching practice. The result has been a significant divide between theory and practice, resulting in a cognitive dissonance between our classroom activities and our scholarly activity. However, by presenting each of these terms as dynamic and performative, this dissertation invites the field to find productive practical possibilities inside of them. Moreover, the …

Oscar Brousse Jacobson: The Life And Art Of A Cosmopolitan Cultural Broker, Anne Allbright Dec 2017

Oscar Brousse Jacobson: The Life And Art Of A Cosmopolitan Cultural Broker, Anne Allbright

History Theses and Dissertations

As a graduate student studying art at Yale, Oscar Brousse Jacobson (1882–1966) pinned his career on the hopes of someday opening an art school in the American West. Jacobson was a Swedish immigrant, but he felt a deep connection to the West because he spent much of his youth on a ranch in Kansas and roamed the greater Southwest by horseback during the late 1800s. Jacobson believed that after he completed his graduate studies in New England, he would eventually return West. He planned to bring great works of art, produce his own paintings, instruct young artists, and foster art …

Wildlife Policy And Conservation: An Interdisciplinary Historical Perspective, Catherine C. Macdonald Dec 2017

Wildlife Policy And Conservation: An Interdisciplinary Historical Perspective, Catherine C. Macdonald

Open Access Dissertations

It is widely recognized that historical data about human interactions with the natural world is critical to understanding anthropogenic environmental change over time (McNeill, 2001). However, the potential contribution of interdisciplinary historical perspectives to wildlife conservation problems remains largely unexplored. Human-wildlife interactions are informed by a variety of factors, including the scientific and ecological literacy of human populations, human values, the availability of habitat and resources for human and animal populations, and the types of resource conflicts taking place (or likely to take place) (Treves et al., 2006). The role of historical interactions in shaping present attitudes and conflicts can …

Vincent De Paul And The Empowerment Of Women, Louise Sullivan Dec 2017

Vincent De Paul And The Empowerment Of Women, Louise Sullivan

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

The year 2017, marking the 400th Anniversary of the birth of the Vincentian Charism, has proven to be one of celebration for the entire Vincentian Family. While thousands of women are taking part in these celebrations around the world, the role women played in the birth and development of the charism is often overlooked. To do so however, is to miss a singularly significant aspect of Vincent de Paul’s genius, namely, the mission of charity he confided to the laity and particularly to women. Vincent de Paul’s life and his works would become what they were and what they continue …

Vincentian Social Justice: A Work In Progress, John E. Rybolt Dec 2017

Vincentian Social Justice: A Work In Progress, John E. Rybolt

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

St. Vincent de Paul has become a “universal” figure, a polymorph or shape-shifter, if you will. As a classic figure, somewhat like Jesus in certain circles, he is represented in various guises: founder, saint, simultaneously traditional and modern, even a revolutionary. Just like Vincent de Paul, the somewhat universal figure, his sons have attempted to follow Christ the evangelizer of the poor. Some have been more successful than others. But I am proud to be among their number: rich or poor in virtue, rich or poor in commitment, rich or poor in initiative or inventiveness.

Portraits, Preservation & Pedigrees: An Introduction To Photographic Portraiture, Photographs As A Means Of Genealogical Research, And A Preservation Case Study Of The Howard D. Beach Studio Collection Of Glass Plate Negatives, Kirsten Feigel Dec 2017

Portraits, Preservation & Pedigrees: An Introduction To Photographic Portraiture, Photographs As A Means Of Genealogical Research, And A Preservation Case Study Of The Howard D. Beach Studio Collection Of Glass Plate Negatives, Kirsten Feigel

Museum Studies Theses

Photography is an established art form that combines the knowledge of chemistry, light, and optics to render an image. Initially, the image is captured on a flat surface coated with emulsion and combined with an exposure to sunlight or another illuminating source. Today, images are captured by digital methods. Artistically, the photograph may reveal sceneries of landscapes, of treasured belongings and of people, as they are seen to the human eye. Photographic portraiture is the oldest style of photography next to landscape imagery, due to commercial photographers setting up studios and experimenting with photography’s many cameras, plates, and emulsions. In …

Blood Over Soil: The Misconception Of Nazi Environmentalism, Kevin Cranney Nov 2017

Blood Over Soil: The Misconception Of Nazi Environmentalism, Kevin Cranney

History & Classics Student Scholarship

Most people do not immediately think of environmentalism when they hear the term “Nazi.” Nazis were racist imperialists who killed millions of people. Is it possible for the genocidal policies of the Third Reich to be compatible with green politics and nature preservation? Several historians and sociologists during a period of anti-green backlash and Nazi revisionism in the late 20th century argued that environmentalism was, indeed, a central part of National Socialism. Citing environmentally progressive Nazi legislation combined with elements of the “Blood and Soil” element of Nazi ideology, these individuals made a case that Hitler and the Nazis were …

Once More, With Feeling: Tra 17 And Original Intent Of Subpart F, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Nir Fishbien

Articles

For the first time since 1913, Congress is considering abandoning the principle that U.S. residents should be subject to tax on all income “from whatever source derived.” Specifically, the proposed tax reform legislation, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, would completely exempt from U.S. taxation dividends from controlled foreign corporations. This is therefore a good occasion for considering the reasons we tax those dividends in the first place.

Fall/Winter 2017: If These Bricks Could Talk, St. Norbert College

St. Norbert College Magazine 2013-2018

Boyle Hall has seen its share of larks, learning – even love affairs. As we closed in on the venerable landmark’s first century (celebrated at the start of this semester) we invited members of the St. Norbert community to share their memories of a building in which every living alum of the college has taken at least one class. We enjoyed these so much – romances, follies, lessons for a lifetime, a poem – that we thought you should see them, too. And, we would like to hear your own experiences of a building that first opened its doors to …
