Winnebago Nation Of Nebraska Response Patterns, 1865-1911: A Gendered & Generational Analysis, Ashley Morrison
Winnebago Nation Of Nebraska Response Patterns, 1865-1911: A Gendered & Generational Analysis, Ashley Morrison
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
During the era of federal assimilation policy, the Winnebago people asserted their cultural identity and history at every step of allotment and boarding school policy. From their distinct responses, Winnebago men and women defended their autonomy and sovereignty to federal intervention. By examining their unique opinions, a more cumulative understanding of the various tactics the Winnebago people used can be further explored. Gender, education, and generation shaped individual responses. Through demanding an inclusion of women in allotting land to taking children away from the Winnebago Industrial School, the Winnebago people resisted against the paternalistic control of the United States. These …
The Fate Of Universal History: On The Task Of Philosophy Of History Between Kant And Benjamin, Daniel Pepe
The Fate Of Universal History: On The Task Of Philosophy Of History Between Kant And Benjamin, Daniel Pepe
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents a materialist inheritance of the idealist theory of universal history that descends from Immanuel Kant through Early German Romanticism to Walter Benjamin. I show that the division between the idealist and the materialist interpretations of universal history results from their methodologically distinct treatments of the problem of historical violence. Where idealism explains the conceptual coherence of historical processes in a specifically teleological unity (no matter how critically modified), materialist theories of universal history reject such a teleological model of conceptual necessity as historical unity not in order to disregard the issue of history’s coherence, but to articulate …
Abortion, Homosexuality, And Fiscal Conservatism: The Coalescence Of The New Right Around A Partisan Sex Education, Sheridan Macy
Abortion, Homosexuality, And Fiscal Conservatism: The Coalescence Of The New Right Around A Partisan Sex Education, Sheridan Macy
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
A new movement surrounding the implementation of sex education, including programs aimed at youth with the goals of destigmatization of sex, preventing teen pregnancy, and venereal disease began in the 1960s. This launched a debate about what information should be available about sex and sexuality and to whom. Initial debates at the end of the 1960s and in the early 1970s focused on whether or not sex education should be included in schools at all, however, by the mid-1970s and early 1980s, the debate had moved on to what specifically these courses should cover. Born in 1964 and liberalized in …

A European Destiny: A Review Of "The Great Cauldron: A History Of Southeastern Europe" By Marie-Janine Calic, Michael Foley
A European Destiny: A Review Of "The Great Cauldron: A History Of Southeastern Europe" By Marie-Janine Calic, Michael Foley
Other
The Balkans only became the Balkans from the late nineteenth century, a designation that brought with it connotations of otherness, non-Europe, or only sort of Europe. Before that much of southeastern Europe was simply “Turkey in Europe” or the Near East as newspapers tended to call the region. Those parts of the Balkans which were not part of Turkey in Europe were, of course, also ruled by imperial powers, either Austrian or Venetian.
Disasters And The Making Of Asian History, Chris Courtney, Fiona Williamson
Disasters And The Making Of Asian History, Chris Courtney, Fiona Williamson
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Environmental historians have often been drawn to disasters. They have unearthed the often-forgotten stories of erupting volcanoes, raging rivers and rainless skies, and in so doing have reminded their colleagues from more anthropocentric disciplines that the societies, economies and cultures they study are part of broader physical systems. In addition to highlighting the agency of nature, however, disasters have also helped to remind us that environmental history remains at heart a humanistic discipline. It should never be simply a lament for lost natural habitats, but also a discipline which offers a unique prism through which to study people. It is …

Pearls, People, And Power : Pearling And Indian Ocean Worlds, Pedro Machado, Steve Mullins, Joseph Christensen
Pearls, People, And Power : Pearling And Indian Ocean Worlds, Pedro Machado, Steve Mullins, Joseph Christensen
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Pearls, People, and Power is the first book to examine the trade, distribution, production, and consumption of pearls and mother-of-pearl in the global Indian Ocean over more than five centuries. While scholars have long recognized the importance of pearling to the social, cultural, and economic practices of both coastal and inland areas, the overwhelming majority have confined themselves to highly localized or at best regional studies of the pearl trade. By contrast, this book stresses how pearling and the exchange in pearl shell were interconnected processes that brought the ports, islands, and coasts into close relation with one another, creating …
Bitter Fruit, Ronald J. Green
Bitter Fruit, Ronald J. Green
Theses and Dissertations
Pain is a phenomenon like fear, belief, and love -- among the forces that determine the course of our lives long before we are born. These conditions generate the layers of the human soul, marrying one life with others past, present and future.
There is an unconscious consensus on the linearity of time. Our lives, memories, dreams and reflections constantly present a challenge to this general agreement. Life, like time, is a series of interlocking awarenesses. Paths intersect, the actions of individuals deposit change into an internal pool of collective experience. Freud once believed that the past is not fixed …
Resonance Of Bartolome De Las Casas’ Thoughts In Leonardo Boff’S Theology, Ramil R. Marcos
Resonance Of Bartolome De Las Casas’ Thoughts In Leonardo Boff’S Theology, Ramil R. Marcos
Loyola Papers
This paper examines the convergence between Boff’s theology and the thought of Bartolome de las Casas. The aim is to arrive at a way of understanding Trinitarian Theology which is both rooted in and relevant to people’s experiences. The paper highlights the vestiges of this relatively recent theology in the life and work of the great Dominican missionary, Bartolome de las Casas. It presents the striking similarity between the suffering and oppression experienced by the peoples of Latin America and the native Indians to the heart-wrenching contexts of our people today, which was further exacerbated by the pandemic. As such, …

Datam: Digital Approaches To Teaching The Ancient Mediterranean, Sebastian Heath
Digital Press Books
DATAM: Digital Approaches to Teaching the Ancient Mediterranean provides a series of new critical studies that explore digital practices for teaching the Ancient Mediterranean world at a wide range of institutions and levels. These practical examples demonstrate how gaming, coding, immersive video, and 3D imaging can bridge the disciplinary and digital divide between the Ancient world and contemporary technology, information literacy, and student engagement. While the articles focus on Classics, Ancient History, and Mediterranean archaeology, the issues and approaches considered throughout this book are relevant for anyone who thinks critically and practically about the use of digital technology in the …

Friends, Barbarians, Future Countrymen: Clientela And Caesar’S De Bello Gallico, J.T. Godfrey
Friends, Barbarians, Future Countrymen: Clientela And Caesar’S De Bello Gallico, J.T. Godfrey
Honors Papers
Imagine a Roman citizen of the 50s BCE unrolling Caesar’s Commentarii de Bello Gallico. They might expect a dramatic tale of barbarians rushing naked against Roman shields with faces painted blue, blonde mustaches adorning their faces, their hair like horses’ manes flowing in the wind. Our Roman would probably believe Gallic society to be even more mysterious than their battle tactics; after all, they counsel with druids, they count by nights, and they believe in a never-ending cycle of life and death. Although some Romans possibly read Posidonius’ account of Gallic society (which dispels some of these prejudices), most would …

From Nineteenth Amendment To Era: Constitutional Amendments For Women's Equality, Tracy A. Thomas
Akron Law Faculty Publications
A modern movement has renewed efforts to pass the ERA, still believing in the necessity of a constitutional guarantee of the broad legal and social equality of women first advanced 171 years ago. This essay traces the history of the women’s constitutional demands for equality, from its origins in Seneca Falls, the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment, the proposed ERA, and modern efforts for a new amendment to secure gender equality.
My Hall. A Stage Play And My Hall: Excavating, Shaping And Sharing The Memory Of Hale School’S Memorial Hall Through A Site-Specific, Staged Performance. An Exegesis, Julia Jarel
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis provides a case study which investigates the notion that a building which is historically and architecturally significant to a community holds that community’s memories within its walls. It argues that, in collaboration with the members of that community, these memories can be excavated, revealed and woven together to form a piece of site-specific theatre which can then be performed by and for those community members. It proposes that this intergenerational, creative collaboration may enhance the community members’ understanding and appreciation of the significance of the building, its place in the community and their place within it.

Child Naming Practice And Changing Trends In Modern Japan, Noriko Mori-Kolbe
Child Naming Practice And Changing Trends In Modern Japan, Noriko Mori-Kolbe
The Coastal Review
Given name is a cultural component that reflects family life. The present study is a literature-based research on newborn baby naming practice in Japan from 1912-2018. Based on existing literatures on naming, examples and surveys on given names, an overview of a naming pattern in Japan is presented and discussed within a sociocultural framework. Historical observations of baby names include popular female and male names and their recent trends. The study also shows that in Japan computerization has changed learning method, information transmission method and communication modes, and that digital natives name their children in different ways than older generations.
