John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

To Emily Putton

Yosemite Valley,
April 2, 1872.

Dear friend Emily:

Your broad pages are received. You must never waste letter time in apologies for size. The more vast and prairie-like the better. But now for the business part of your coming. Be sure you let me know within a few days the time of your setting out so that I may be able to keep myself in a findable, discoverable place. I am, as, perhaps, I told you, engaged in the study of glaciers and mountain structure, etc., and I am often out alone for weeks where you couldn't …

Letter From John Muir To [Ralph Waldo] Emerson, 1872 Mar 26., John Muir

John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

Yosemite Valley March 26th 72. Evening ---- -----Dear Emerson Yosemite is waving & throbbing in that kind of storm called Earthquake throbbing while I write. This morning at half past two oclock I was shaken most suddenly from sleep to blessed life. My cabin was full of strange sounds, & was rocking, crazing, swedging, shuddering in so boisterous a way that in crossing the floor I had to stagger & steady as if walking the deck of a schooner in waves. I had never experienced this kind of storm. Nevertheless I was not in doubt one moment for as the …

John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

Oakland, Feb. 4, '72.

Dear John,

The rain falls so gently, I seem to feel the ferns uncoiling, the social companies of poulsatilla whispering to each other.just under ground, 'The morning is near', Hepaticas getting ready for their leap into the arms of Spring, under its influence. Jus-t such a rain as fills every moss urn in our northern woods and makes the Eypnum beds so green,so green.
Strange, is'nt it, that those woods, that beech trunks and hemlock thickets should seem so much more spiritual, than any creature of this occidental world. Hope used to say, when for the …

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

88 the wonders of the yosemite valley. The Eecent Earthquake in Yosemite. Readers of the preceding pages will remember the many proofs of old and existing volcanic eruptions in the region of the Sierras; and recently {here has been in this region some severe earthquake disturbance. The earth has been rent in long and deep, but narrow, fissures ; rocks, trees, animals and dwellings have been swallowed up or destroyed, and great destruction of property, and not a little terror, have been the result of these tremblings, which even now have not ceased. Confining ourselves here to the Valley, the …

A Semi-Centennial Discourse Before The First Congregational Society In Bridgewater, Delivered On Lord's Day, 17th September 1871, Richard Manning Hodges

Histories of Bridgewater & Local Institutions

The Rev. Richard Manning Hodges served as minister of the First Congregational Society in Bridgewater (at the time called the South Parish and now known as the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Bridgewater, MA) from 1821 to 1833, after having been ordained there in 1821. On the fiftieth anniversary of his ministry and after a long career in Cambridge and Somerville he returned to his first settlement to address the congregation.

This volume of approximately sixty pages is a complete text of both his discourse and the other elements of a Unitarian religious service of the 1870’s period. The …

I most devoutly disbelieve. This so-called development theory yet it is far from being necessarily absurd or ridiculous there is a great deal of misapprehension and confused misunderstanding among people in general concerning it.
I perceive in Chas Darwin not a visionary enthusiast nor malicious enemy to revealed religion but a profound and righteous philosopher an earnest seeker after truth at the un[ ]gled fountains of pure nature. The mind of Darwin is not itself satisfied with his own theory. He has had excellent opportunities for observation. This great intellect is brooding over the vast ocean of organic …

and you know how much work that brings along with it, but it is pretty well along now and I think will be very comfortable when finished. I have been doing rather more then my usual amount of digging making and planting this spring, my tree's and bushes are growing finely and I think repay for all the trouble, my health is rather poor but I manage to be around and help along a little. I keep a girl to do my work and go out of doors a good deal. Maggie has been out here twice lately she …
