Dear Sir:-
Will you kindly give me a seven to ten minnet sketch of the life and works of John Muir, who as I understand is in the employ of the government as geologist and perhaps in other capacities, in our National Parks and Reservations.
From the literary point I have "Wild Parks and Forest Reservations of the West"- "The Yellowstone National …

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)
THE GRAND CANON OF THE COLORADO1 BY JOHN MUIR Author of " The Mountains of California" " Our National Parks" etc. HAPPY nowadays is the tourist, with earth's wonders, new and old, spread invitingly open before him, and a host of able workers as his slaves • making everything easy, padding plush about him, grading roads for him, boring tunnels, moving hills out of his way, eager, like the devil, to show him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory and foolishness, spiritualizing travel for him with lightning and steam, abolishing space and time and almost everything else. …

My Dear Sir
Presuming that you will be pleased to hear from one who accompanied you about 1872 on one of your tips from Yosemite Valley to Lake Mons I now yield to inclination I have had every time during the past thirty years I have been reminded of you. Some of these reminders have been magazine articles I have read over your signature. Once I met a relitive of yours on a railroad train between New Haven and New York. Three years ago coming down the Rhine in Europe I

My dear Muir:
Mrs. Tully tells us, in a letter recounting her delightful visit to you, of a number of animal stories that you related. of course I have heard some of these; but I write for the publishers, in the most formal and official manner, to tell you that we want you to write for The Century a book of these stories, which might lead off with your story of "Stickeen." We have great confidence that such …

Camp Colby, July 5, 1902
Dear Mama:
We are spending the day in camp for the first time since we reached here. That is, this is the first whole day we have stayed in camp for there has been so much to see and so many places to go. I have just finished lunch. It consisted of ten biscuits, seven pickles (small) a big plate full of stewed dried apples, some flour and bacon grease gravy and a big dipper full of strong tea without sugar (sugar has given out) and am still living and feeling as happy and healthy …

Crandall, Tenn.
June 8th, 1902.
Dear Mr. Muir:
I was greatly pleased the other day to receive your charming book "The Mountains of California". I am only slightly acquainted with that beautiful state and shall enjoy reading of its varied and wonderful scenes and the fascinating animal life within its borders, — all the more, too, through the element of personality that the book now possesses for me as a gift from yourself. Two summers ago I camped in the San Bernardino Mts and for a short while enjoyed the company of Mr. Lukens of Pasadena, who, like myself, was …
