[letterhead]Oakland, California, Oct. 20, 1914Dear Mr. Muir:Yours of 10th inst enclosing check for $500 received. I am not sure as to whether you considered that so beautiful and choice a publication was well worth the amount you sent, [illegible] if out of your goodness of heart you desired to make a gift to our Club House fund of the difference beyond the price of the book which is $150. If the latter is the case which I readily believe on behalf of the Club I thank you heartily for your kindness.I trust that you have fully recovered your usual health …

Home, Oct. 2, 1914.Dear Papa:-I received your letter saying you were going to send my vines and so I have been on the lookout for them. I feel sure they will do well as the ground around this yard is pretty good and there is lots of shade and water. All the things I have planted so far are doing beautifully. If the things you are sending this time grow I may ask for some others, if it is no trouble to you. I would like a nice wistaria root if there are any that could be dug up, a …

PRESIDENT BUTLER of Columbia University is reported to have said in an address before the New York Chamber of Commerce in 1911, that "the limited liability corporation is the greatest single discovery of modem times, whether you judge it by its social, by its ethical, by its industrial, or, in the long run--after we understand it and know how to use it,--by its political, effects." 1

Dear Mr. Muir:
I have never got hold of anything more absorbingly interesting than these typewritten pages and they will be read as classics by posterity. But now I want you to take pity on my ignorance and tell me when and where the spelling of pigeon was changed to pidgeon, for it must be there has been an authoritative change or neither you nor the typewriter would use it. On page 40 you say "gave David and I" instead of "gave David and me", but on the whole it is excellently typed.

I'm so glad you are getting on so well in your desert home after so much hard weary moving work from your Hollywood place.
Wanda said yesterday that she had hoped to visit you ere this, but was detained by breaking in a new cook one of the most destructive of all the world's animals!

Grass Lake Mich,
Mr John Muir:-
I have just finished reading your book to my son--"The Story of my boyhood and youth." I read to him while he eats breakfast. And I told him his opportunity was different from yours, even if we are just plain country people. The book was most interesting and we much admired the boy and his [work?] - the "home-loving boy". My people came from Scotland - and this June we - my son 12 years old this month and his father and myself - expect to go to
