The Horror Of History: Medieval And Early Modern Christianity And The Use Of Narratological Persecution, William Cole Younger
The Horror Of History: Medieval And Early Modern Christianity And The Use Of Narratological Persecution, William Cole Younger
Student Theses and Dissertations
The history of emotion has given a bit of attention to the role that fear plays as a historical motive. Yet, what fear is or how it may be used when examining primary sources which possess fictitious tales has sorely been neglected. In order to address this, this thesis argues that historians need to employ philosophical concepts of horror in order to truly grasp the unique qualities that emerge from these tales. This thesis provides a historical framework for these philosophical understandings of horror by examining the medieval and early modern mentalities which served as a framework for the formalization …

The Chapelle Des Lazaristes And Reliquary Shrine Of St. Vincent De Paul, 1850 To 1860: An Exposé Of Competing Aesthetic Schemes & Their Resolutions In The Alliance Des Arts, Simone Zurawski Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
Simone Zurawski describes the history, art, and architecture of the motherhouse church of the Congregation of the Mission, the Chapelle des Lazaristes in Paris. She also compares it to the Congregation’s church at the original site of their motherhouse and explains what the Congregation’s leadership was trying to accomplish with the design of the new chapelle. The chapelle is the site of Vincent de Paul’s reliquary shrine, and Zurawski describes the châsse or case that houses Vincent’s remains, which was designed by the legendary silversmith Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot. She explains how it was incorporated into the altar’s design. Through her research, …

“An Object Lesson To The Country”—The 1915 Atlantic Fleet Summer Exercise And The U.S. Navy On The Eve Of World War I, Ryan Peeks
Naval War College Review
This unrealistic summer exercise scenario was designed to embarrass the Secretary of the Navy and force the Wilson administration to expand the Navy, illuminating three aspects of the service on the cusp of America’s entry into war: a rupture in civil-military relations, the use to which the Navy put its German counterpart, and Navy leaders’ assessment of the service after two decades of naval buildup.

Binary Logic: Race, Expertise, And The Persistence Of Uncertainty In American Sex Research, Beans Velocci
Binary Logic: Race, Expertise, And The Persistence Of Uncertainty In American Sex Research, Beans Velocci
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Between the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, American researchers tried to sort the living world by sex. Their efforts created more taxonomic problems than they solved, but as they encountered vast quantities of evidence that did not at all show an obvious or stable division between male and female bodies, they used sexual uncertainty to their professional and ideological advantage. This dissertation traces a network of scientists who built their own claims to expertise, as well as theories of racial hierarchy rooted in sexual difference, out of sexually unruly bodies. While much scholarship on the history of sex science describes the …
Making And Debating Empires In South Asia And The Global British Empire, 1756-1799, Tiraana Bains
Making And Debating Empires In South Asia And The Global British Empire, 1756-1799, Tiraana Bains
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Why did a strong centralizing British imperial state emerge in South Asia in the eighteenth century? The partial loss of the British Empire in North America, the ferment of partisan politics in Britain and the rise of powerful regional South Asian states during this period amply demonstrate that such a transformation was not inevitable. This dissertation argues that continuous and multi-sited contestation drove British imperial state-building in South Asia. The formation of a centralizing British imperial state in South Asia was not only violent and coercive but, akin to the concurrent emergence of the United States of America and revolutionary …

We examine in this critical essay a sung and danced poetry of tragedy by Kaliopasi Fe‘iloakitau Kaho about the people of Ha‘apai leaving for Tongatapu in search for their king Tāufa‘āhau. By making good use of the three types of heliaki, “metaphorically saying one thing but historically meaning another,” he talks about the deep sadness of the people of Ha‘apai, in thinking and feeling they have been deserted, promoting them to leave in search of their most beloved. Out of both frustration and desperation, they were determined and committed to embark on their mission, using whatever means and irrespective of …

We critically examine Tuaikaepau “Slow-but-sure” as a sung and danced poetry of tragedy by Queen Sālote, in which she deals with her subject matter of artistic and literary creativity as a text in the broader context of history. Poetry and tragedy are respectively concerned with the mediation of ‘uhinga human meanings, and anga‘i-tangata sociality and anga‘i-manu animality, resulting in fakamā shame. Both poetry and tragedy are conducted in history, treated in Tonga (and Moana Oceania) in plural, temporal–spatial, collectivistic, holistic, and circular ways, as opposed to their treatment in singular, techno–teleological, individualistic, atomistic, and linear modes in the West. History …

When Saeed Betrays Fuad: Laughing At The Mechanized Occupation, Ezgi Demirors
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis comparatively explores the emergence of the comic in the novel The Secret Life of Saeed The Pessoptimist by Emile Habibi and the film The Time That Remains directed by Elia Suleiman, by building on Bergson’s theory of mechanization. By tracing Bergson’s idea that comic effect is created through the creeping up of the mechanical on the living, the establishment of the “mechanical occupation” as a source of the comic will be elucidated. The comic will be explored in terms of the ways in which both texts offer a new historicizing operation, being works that focus on the narration …

International Grassland Congress Outlook – A Historical Review And Future Expectations, L. R. Humphreys
International Grassland Congress Outlook – A Historical Review And Future Expectations, L. R. Humphreys
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Features of the history of the International Grassland Congress are mentioned. Aspects of a number of failed themes in grassland science are described with respect to molecular biology, intensive systems of ruminant production, carbohydrate use in plant growth, plant succession and range condition, and stocking method. Future expectations are focused on meeting a balance of objectives, maintaining reductionist science, taking new initiatives in plant improvement and in the development of animal production systems, and reducing barriers to international trade. The adoption of grassland science depends upon the growth of new learning, especially through cyclical interaction between scientists and farmers.

TO THE MEMORY OF JOHN MUIR by C. Hart Merriam John Huir was doubtless more widely known and more generally loved than any other Californian. He left a trail that is worth following. It leads to the mountains and forests, to health and happiness, and to a better appreciation of nature, while he loved the mountains and everything in them, his chief interests centered about the dynamic forces that shaped their features, and the vegetation that clothed their slopes. But of all the objects in nature, trees appealed to him most strongly. These he knew as no other man has …

Reminiscences about John Muir (1915-c.1923)
JOHN MUIR By Katharine Merrill Graydon While the goldseekers of '49 were risking their perilous way by land and by sea to California, there came to our Middle West a Scotchman with his little son of eleven years, this lad, too, was bound for the great Golden State, though years and toil and travel were to intervene. Knowing nothing of the Old World but his own birthplace in the land of brown heather, the little stranger wandered with unspeakable delight over his father's acres in unploughed, untrodden, undesecrated Wisconsin. Such vastness, such color, such glory, he had never dreamed of. …

Digitally Mapping The Buddhist Holy Land: Intercultural Communication, Religious History, And Networked Rhetoric, Derek F. Maher, Guiseppe Getto
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
Intercultural communication presents an array of well-known and much-discussed challenges, including the difficulties of engaging in productive dialogues regarding cultural assumptions, the problems of translation, tensions between macro-level value systems and the uniqueness of individual cultures, and challenges to developing communication technologies that are culturally appropriate (Kostelnick, 1995; Maylath, 1997; Thatcher, 2006; Sun, 2012). When addressing the diverse dimensions of religious culture, there is the added obstacle that understanding another’s religion can sometimes become entwined with how people feel about their own deeply held religious values and assumptions (Jackson, 2004). Special obstacles to understanding can arise in relation to religion …

Musical “Conquest”: The Spanish Use Of Music In The Spiritual Conquest Of The Nahua Peoples Of Sixteenth-Century Mexico, John Richardson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Historians have grown more interested in Spanish Conquest and colonialism in the last century. While earlier historians saw the conquest through a more euro-centric lens, recent historians have tried to take a more nuanced approach to understanding the conquest. Within this research, historians are questioning traditional narratives of the "spiritual conquest," or the conversion of native peoples to Christianity. Scholars have shown that "conquest" is not the best term for this process, as there was much more give and take at play.
My research seeks to strengthen this narrative of religious accommodation through the lens of music. The transmission of …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This body of work explores the complex webs between human and animal relations. The commingled history is displayed within individual animal forms that show those characteristics that people today claim they can still "see" in animals. Each work is a visual record showing fragments of the thousands of years old story. They clay and pigments that have been used are equally as significant for their part in the record keeping practiced by our ancestors since before the invention of paper.

The Status Of Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) As A Technologically Feasible Species For U.S. Marine Aquaculture, Reginald Blaylock, Eric Saillant, Angelos Apeitos, David Abrego, Paul Cason, Robert Vega
Faculty Publications
Culture models and facilities for large-scale, commercial production of popular Gulf of Mexico species are unavailable. The spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) is one of the most popular recreational fishes in the Gulf of Mexico. Seatrout culture techniques were adapted from red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) protocols developed in the 1970s. Broodstock husbandry, spawning, and extensive pond rearing techniques using fertilized and bloomed brackish ponds were well-established by the 1980s. By 2018, approximately 80 million 25–30-day old seatrout had been produced, mainly for stock enhancement. Cannibalism and poor nutrition hindered intensive tank culture. Between 2005 and 2015, an …

Iliamna Lake Ethnogeography: Yup'ik Place Names And Sense Of Place, Yoko Kugo
Arctic and Northern Studies
This dissertation explores Iliamna Lake ethnogeography, the physical and mental understanding of the landscape, by researching Yup'ik place names and stories about these places from Iliamna Lake Yup'ik perspectives (Yupiit iingitgun). Many Yup'ik place names were forgotten after Euro-Americans arrived and introduced modern education in the early twentieth century. Some Iliamna Lake Yup'ik Elders remember Indigenous place names even though the subsistence resources in the places have declined or they no longer travel there due to environmental and cultural changes. Prompted by the declining population of Iliamna Lake Yup'ik speakers, along with their knowledge, the Iliamna Lake communities requested this …

The Broken Edge: Violence, Kinship, And Nation In The U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, 1820-1890, Patrick Troester
History Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a study of how people experienced and gave meaning to the violent conflicts that transformed the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands from a multipolar region into one dominated by two modern nation-states. As multiple imperial and national projects converged here between 1821-1890, borderland violence became a central way in which local people interacted with and participated in nation- and state-making. Using archival evidence from both sides of the modern border, I examine how borderlands people used gendered, racialized, and familial ideologies to organize, understand, and politicize these conflicts as well as to reckon their shifting positions within emerging nation-states. With …

When Half The Neighborhood Is Missing: How To Overcome Systemic Poverty And Gentrification Following The Models Of Dudley Street And Mission Waco, Kevin A. Brown, Kevin A. Brown, Kevin A. Brown
Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses
Abstract
By following the examples of Mission Waco and The Dudley Street Initiative, it is possible to renew a sense of beloved community by changing the narrative of poverty and gentrification by rebuilding the village through empowering the poor and marginalized.
Mission Waco and The Dudley Street Initiative are comprehensive sustainable communities because they combine numerous social and economic interventions under developed strategic plans. The principal question that this dissertation seeks to answer is whether these models can be implemented in local communities to help overcome gentrification and poverty. Implementation can be successful if we can identify the problem, rethink …

The Racked System: A Historically Based Interactive Roleplaying Experience, Will Truran
Theses
“History repeats itself” is a saying we are all too familiar with, but why is that true? As we look at our modern society we can see that pain persists and hate crimes are on the rise, particularly those of antisemitism and those holding anti-Asian ideologies. The Racked System aims to address this by introducing a new method of learning about our past so that we can apply its lessons to our future. Classroom settings require students to memorize dates and data that often capture hard to comprehend facts, like that six million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust. It …
Criminal Law And Parricide In A Reflection Of Social Parameters From The Roman Monarchy Into The Early Empire, Sierra Epke
Criminal Law And Parricide In A Reflection Of Social Parameters From The Roman Monarchy Into The Early Empire, Sierra Epke
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
This paper seeks to determine the role of Roman criminal law and its connection to the social responses and punishments relating to parricide. The research for this project was conducted through print materials pertaining to the subject and online resources including databases accessed through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Library system. As Roman society progressed, criminal law grew in range and scope providing different categories of homicide. One such category created was the crime of parricide in which a family member is killed by another member. Because of the power the heads of households, generally the father, possessed in Roman society, …
Cultivating Eliot's Historical Sense: Eliotic Time And The Waste Land's Response To Alienation, Thomas Ball
Cultivating Eliot's Historical Sense: Eliotic Time And The Waste Land's Response To Alienation, Thomas Ball
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I argue that T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land marshals his account of historical sense as a response to the problem of alienation in modernity. Eliot’s historical sense depends upon an awareness of the endurance of the past, demanding a reorientation to the structure of temporality. I interrogate the temporal ramifications of Eliot’s account, arguing that it resonates with Henri Bergson’s durational theory of time. I ultimately investigate Eliot’s relationship to Bergson, suggesting that Eliot intervenes in the Bergsonian framework by establishing duration as a cultural, rather than individual or ontological, reality.
