Survey Of The History, Development, And Medical Uses Of Chinese Acupuncture, Kendell G. Hansen Jan 1977

Survey Of The History, Development, And Medical Uses Of Chinese Acupuncture, Kendell G. Hansen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

It is difficult to pick up a magazine, medical or otherwise, that does not include an article about the Chinese method of diagnosis and treatment known as acupuncture. This ancient technique, about which there is so much current interest, is reputed to have originated nearly 30 centuries ago when a Chinese warrior emperor made the observation that certain arrow wounds caused pain to disappear in remote parts of the body.

During World War II, the new China of the Red Army rediscovered the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of wounded or sick soldiers during combat conditions. Today, Chinese medical …

Nebraska And Rural Electrification Through 1940, Roberta K. Barndt Dec 1976

Nebraska And Rural Electrification Through 1940, Roberta K. Barndt

Student Work

Since Nebraska is primarily an agricultural state, the struggle to bring electricity to its rural areas played an important role in the long-standing battle to decrease the disparity between living standards in rural and urban America. During the first two decades of the twentieth century, telephones and automobiles lessened rural isolation while increased utilization of tractors and other technological innovations rendered farm labor less tedious. Nevertheless, without electricity, the one modern innovation that more than any other brought comfort and convenience within the reach of the urban masses, living and working conditions on the farm remained comparatively primitive. Farm families …

A Study Of Historical Evidences Related To Lds Church As Reflected In Volumes Xiv Through Xxvi Of The Journal Of Discourses, Terry J. Aubrey Apr 1976

A Study Of Historical Evidences Related To Lds Church As Reflected In Volumes Xiv Through Xxvi Of The Journal Of Discourses, Terry J. Aubrey

Theses and Dissertations

The material in this study is a follow-up of a thesis done by Paul C. Richards entitled, "A Study of Evidences Related to LDS Church History as Reflected in Volumes I through XIII of the Journal of Discourse." That same basic format has been employed in treating the last thirteen volumes of the Discourses.

The Discourses contains addresses delivered by General Authorities of the LDS Church and others from 1854 to 1886. Until Richards did his thesis, no one had compiled an index of those volumes that dealt exclusively with history related to the LDS Church. This study …

Beaver, Alaska: The Story Of A Multi-Ethnic Community, William Schneider Mar 1976

Beaver, Alaska: The Story Of A Multi-Ethnic Community, William Schneider

Emeriti Faculty

This work addresses itself to the role that ethno-historical research can play in understanding the present day life of Indians and Eskimos living in a multi-ethnic community in the interior of Alaska. To do this, an attempt has been made to write and analyze the history of the community in a manner that reflects the separate tribal, ethnic, and individual differences of the various people who settled there. Documentation of cultural patterning by different groups enables the researcher to understand the dynamics of cultural persistence and change throughout time in land use, social relations, economic pursuits, attitudes and values. This …

The Education Of Colonial Women: Attitudes And Family Influences, Jerry Marsh Jan 1976

The Education Of Colonial Women: Attitudes And Family Influences, Jerry Marsh

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Most historians of the education of American colonial women began their studies with the entrance of women into formal institutions of learning. As a result they have neglected significant developments in the history of the education of American women because it was not until the nineteenth century that formal institutions were opened to women. With the growing interest in feminist studies one is very much aware of the problems women had breaking into the educational community of the nineteenth century. While this trend toward formal education for women was important, historians lose a much-needed perspective if they neglect the developments …

British Wildlife Law Before The American Revolution: Lessons From The Past, Thomas A. Lund Nov 1975

British Wildlife Law Before The American Revolution: Lessons From The Past, Thomas A. Lund

Michigan Law Review

Early legislation may excite the condescending interest ·that Dr. Johnson directed toward a dog walking on its hind legs: "It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all." British wildlife law, however, merits more respect. As long ago as the Middle Ages, man's appetite for meat endowed legislators with at least an ambling competence at wildlife management. Nor has the passage of time made their efforts wholly irrelevant. Early methods of controlling habitat, for example, may still be appropriate since historical change has not altered the needs of animals as it has those of …

A History Of Mapleton, Utah To 1945, Ralph K. Harmer May 1975

A History Of Mapleton, Utah To 1945, Ralph K. Harmer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Mapleton, a small rural Utah community located on the benchlands between Hobble Creek Canyon and Spanish Fork Canyon fifty miles south of Salt Lake City, was settled in the late 1860s and early 1870s by Springvllle and Spanish Fork families who built their homes on their individual farms. These families did not follow traditional Mormon settlement patterns with a City of Zion plat as their guide; their community grew along quite different lines. Its inhabitants never heard a "call" nor did they have their land alloted to them by their church.

The Latter-day Saint Ward, established on the bench In …
