The Justices Of The Peace Of Surrey In National And County Politics, 1483-1570. (Volumes I And Ii)., William Baxter Robison Iii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Surrey provides an excellent case study of the role of justices of the peace in national and county politics in England during the years 1473-1570. Ample documentation exists in the central government records and a rich local collection, the Loseley MSS., and the availability of similar studies for the bordering counties of Hampshire, Kent, and Sussex allows fruitful comparisons. Moreover, though the shire was pulled in many directions by overlapping political and ecclesiastical jurisdictions (e.g., shrievalty, lieutenancy, diocese) and by various regional affinities, there was in Surrey a distinct political county community, the integrity of which all of the Tudors …
The First South Westerners : Aborigines Of South Western Australia, Lois Tilbrook
The First South Westerners : Aborigines Of South Western Australia, Lois Tilbrook
Research outputs pre 2011
The task of preparing material on the Aboriginal inhabitants of the south western region of Western Australia before 1827, is both a fascinating and a challenging one. Fascinating, because these people lived in a unique part of the continent and were amongst the most remote of all the Australian Aborigines, pursuing their traditions in the wet forest lands and open bush country. Challenging, because so little is recorded of them in a way which paints a clear picture of their lives.
The main observers of Aboriginal life and customs in the early days of European settlement of the region were …

Windcrossing: An Intermedia Play Inspired By The Life Of Gustave Whitehead, Donald Coonley
Sacred Heart University Review
The script of Windcrossing, a drama inspired by the life of Gustave Whitehead. The play is a blend of fact and fiction about the inventor who lived in Bridgeport, Connecticut and events in the early twentieth century when Whitehead may or may not have been the first to achieve flight.
A History Of The Big Trees And Avery School Districts, 1881-1940, David E. Gano
A History Of The Big Trees And Avery School Districts, 1881-1940, David E. Gano
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The history of a school district is usually presented as a local history. This type of history is very thorough in naming names, locating sites, and explaining events as they affected the local scene. History does not occur in a vacuum, and often the explanation for certain behaviors or events lies beyond the local phenomena. It is the intention of this study to present the history of the Big Trees and Avery School Districts within a larger context of national forces which were also at work and sometimes, dominated the events. It is hoped that the effort to bring education …

Town Law And Village Law: Satellite Villages, Bethel And Alcohol Control In The Modern Era — The Working Relationship And Its Demise, Stephen Conn
Conference papers
In southwestern Alaska the underpinning of the working relationship between official law and village social control was tied to alcohol control. This paper examines the breakdown of this relationship in the 1960s and its impact on village law. It also assesses the role of town liquor policy and town police and treatment resources on alcohol-related violence in the villages in the 1970s. It argues that a recent movement to reinstitute prohibition of importation and sale in many villages must be understood as a desire for renewal of a working relationship between two centers of legal authority.

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Teaching art is basically a process of sharing socially derived knowledge about art with other persons. In order to communicate the cognitive configuration of art as it appears in our culture, it is necessary to use language. In art education, the visual arts are often thought of as a non-verbal symbol system for encoding experience. For this symbol system to be socially known about, however, it must be codified in language. As Hertzler has pointed out, "The key and basic symbolism of man is language. All the other symbol systems can be interpreted only be means of language?". Language is …
Refugees, Law, And Development In Africa, Peter Nobel
Refugees, Law, And Development In Africa, Peter Nobel
Michigan Journal of International Law
This article concerns those large movements of people in Africa, which have been called the "African refugee problem." However, large and intriguing migrations of populations have occurred in Africa for centuries. The earliest migrations reflected the spread of culture, the growth of trade and the development of roving early kingdoms. The unique history behind the refugee dilemma, however, begins with the instability spawned by slave trading and colonialism. Sensitivity to these eras heightens an understanding of why today's Africa is wrought with economic crises, territorial disputes, unnatural frontiers, misfit ethnic combinations, and more refugees than any other continent. Against this …

New Deal Archaeology In The Southeast: Wpa, Tva, Nps, 1934-1942., Edwin Austin Lyon Ii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study is a history of New Deal archaeology in the Southeastern United States from the Civil Works Administration (CWA) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) archaeological projects in the winter of 1933-1934 to the end of federal relief archaeology in 1942. The federal government selected archaeology as one of its relief programs to put to work some of the many unemployed Americans during the depression of the 1930s. This study focuses on the large Works Progress Administration (WPA) archaeological programs in Louisiana and Kentucky, the combined WPA and TVA programs in Alabama and Tennessee, and the WPA and National …
