Looking Over Vs. Overlooking: Native American Languages: Let's Void The Void, Brian D. Stubbs Jan 1996

Looking Over Vs. Overlooking: Native American Languages: Let's Void The Void, Brian D. Stubbs

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The time-depth of the Romance language family (ca. 2,000 years) yields an abundance of similarities among languages descended from Latin: Spanish, French, Italian, and so forth. The time-depth of Lehi is not much greater (2,600 years), yet no similar abundance of accepted linguistic evidence for Lehi’s presence in the Americas has emerged. Is this because of a lack of evidence or a lack of looking? We cannot know until we look. The relative absence of effort in Native American languages relevant to Book of Mormon research is a huge void in Latter-day Saint scholarly endeavor. This paper discusses the value …

"Getting America Told": The Black Press And Its Dialogue With White America, 1914-1919, William George Jordan Jan 1996

"Getting America Told": The Black Press And Its Dialogue With White America, 1914-1919, William George Jordan

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the role of African-American newspapers as a forum for interracial discourse during World War I. The black press addressed itself to white America, arguing that African-Americans' participation in the war made them worthy of full citizenship, pointing out the similarity between the nation's aim of championing democracy in Europe and the goal of creating racial justice in America, and drawing parallels between atrocities against civilians in Europe and the lynching of African Americans in the Southern states. Some influential white Americans paid attention to these arguments and responded to them. In doing so, they sought to use …

The Indigenous Origins Of The Egyptian God-King, Deborah Jo Burnham Jan 1996

The Indigenous Origins Of The Egyptian God-King, Deborah Jo Burnham

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The question of the Egyptian God-King's origin is not a matter of ethnicity, but rather one of culture. Is it indigenous and as such, an integral part of the rise of Egypt as a primary civilization? Or is it Mesopotamian and a product of diffusion, bringing with it the idea of the city-state and monumental architecture including the pyramid?

Under Blue Skies : The Social Construction Of Intellectual Disability In Western Australia, Errol Cocks (Ed.) Jan 1996

Under Blue Skies : The Social Construction Of Intellectual Disability In Western Australia, Errol Cocks (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

Research into the history of people with intellectual disabilities in Western Australia has been a sporadic undertaking. Scholarship to date has been mainly institutional in character and often undertaken as an adjunct to the study of mental illness. The people themselves have remained mostly invisible. In 1989, the Editors conceived of a social history research project in which, for the first time, an attempt would be made to document the lives of people with intellectual disabilities in Western Australia The project would also aim to describe the institutional, social, political and professional history we identify with mainstream historical scholarship...

Poverty And Social Control In Early Modern England: Exeter, 1558-1625., Connie S. Evans

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Poverty has always been, and continues to be, one of the most pressing social problems, and one to which a number of solutions have been proposed through the ages. The present work is an examination of the problem and the responses to it in early modern England, and is set in the local context of the city of Exeter. Prior to the reign of Elizabeth I, the majority of poor law legislation was punitive in nature. rather than rehabilitative. That the nature of poor law legislation changed under Elizabeth was due to a number of factors, not least of which …
