Analysis Of Students' Misconceptions Of Research Methods In Relations To Thinking Style, Tonya Tavares May 2008

Analysis Of Students' Misconceptions Of Research Methods In Relations To Thinking Style, Tonya Tavares

Senior Honors Projects

This study explores college students’ misconceptions about scientific research methods and their predisposition for rational-analytic thinking or experiential-intuitive thinking. The measures used in assessing misconceptions and thinking style were a seven-item version of Students’ Conceptions of Research Methods Inventory (SCoRI), specifically the misconceptions of research methods subscale (Meyer et al.(2005), and Epstein’s Rational-Experiential Inventory (REI) Scale (1996), respectively. The REI Scale consists of two subscales adapted from the Need for Cognition scale (NFC, J. T. Cacioppo & R. E. Petty, 1982) and Epstein’s Faith in Intuition (FI) scale, each with five questions; REI-NFC measures rational-analytic thinking, while the REI-FI measures …

Assessment Of Whole Grain Intake In A Population Of College Students, Sarah Flinn May 2008

Assessment Of Whole Grain Intake In A Population Of College Students, Sarah Flinn

Senior Honors Projects

Increasing the consumption of whole grain foods is an immediate public health priority. Whole grains are rich in dietary fiber, antioxidants, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Americans of all ages do not eat enough of these foods to benefit from their potential to reduce the risk of certain cancers, diabetes and obesity. The aim of this project is to profile the whole grain intake and document related knowledge and attitudes of a convenience sample of college students at the University of Rhode Island, a group that is at high risk for a low whole grain intake. Using the introductory nutrition (NFS …

Aged Out And On Their Own: Higher Education Experiences Of Former Foster Youth, Theresa Moy May 2008

Aged Out And On Their Own: Higher Education Experiences Of Former Foster Youth, Theresa Moy

Psychology Honors Projects

This study aims to better understand the characteristics, challenges, and outcomes of former foster youth in higher education. Phase I of the study utilized quantitative data to examine the resiliency characteristics of underclassmen and students with higher academic standings in higher education. It was hypothesized that former foster youth with more higher education experiences would be more likely to possess resiliency characteristics. Results from Phase 1 indicated that students with higher academic standings do not necessarily possess more resiliency characteristics overall. Interesting, underclassmen students have more social support than students with higher academic standings. Phase II of the study involved …

System Analysis Of The Uri Hurricane Preparedness Plan, Rebecca Harlow

Senior Honors Projects

If a hurricane were to hit URI in the upcoming fall semester what would happen? This project is a thorough evaluation of the current URI plan, how it works, how it doesn’t and who has the answers. The project is framed from an information systems perspective. The analysis of the system is based on where vital information is stored, how it is communicated when needed and who is involved. To find the answers to these questions, in depth interviews were conducted with key emergency personnel. Among them are URI’s Director of Safety and Risk, J Kevin Culley, Major Baker of …

Private And Public University Students' Perceptions Of Cultural Adjustment Problems In Study Abroad Programs, Walter R. Heinecke Edd May 2008

Private And Public University Students' Perceptions Of Cultural Adjustment Problems In Study Abroad Programs, Walter R. Heinecke Edd

Dissertations

In a world that is increasingly integrated by economics, communications, and politics, higher education is asked to deliver graduates who can function professionally in the international arena. One way to do this is through study abroad programs, which have skyrocketed in popularity among American students over the last 15 years, increasing by 83% to more than 205,000 students in 2007. Despite the obvious benefits associated with such programs, there are challenges to living abroad as well—especially for young adults. To get some sense of these challenges, during the 2005-2006 academic year 114 study abroad students from 2 Southern California universities …

Social And Academic Factors That Contribute To Resiliency For At-Risk Students In Georgia Universities, Kimberly Paige Mullen May 2008

Social And Academic Factors That Contribute To Resiliency For At-Risk Students In Georgia Universities, Kimberly Paige Mullen

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine resiliency factors in at-risk college students to provide insight and strategies for college administrators who have a genuine desire to attract and retain these students. The researcher focused on college students who were minority, low-income and first generation. This study included three seniors who attended three different universities, and were graduating at the end of the semester. The researcher explored social and academic factors, and the findings overwhelming concluded that students who are at-risk have a harder time obtaining a college degree than non-at-risk students. At-risk students face challenges such as lack …

Is There A Duty?: Limiting College And University Liability For Student Suicide, Susanna G. Dyer May 2008

Is There A Duty?: Limiting College And University Liability For Student Suicide, Susanna G. Dyer

Michigan Law Review

This Note argues that nonclinician administrators employed by institutions of higher education do not have a special relationship with their students such that they have a duty to act with reasonable care to prevent a foreseeable student suicide. Courts that have in recent years ruled to the contrary have done so by incorrectly basing their duty-of-care analysis on foreseeability of harm alone. With an eye toward a proper duty-of-care analysis, this Note analyzes multiple factors to reach its conclusion, including the ideal relationship between colleges and their students and the burden on and capability of colleges to protect their students …

A Winding Rhode: An Event Planning Manual For Every Rhody Ram, Jennifer Nussinow May 2008

A Winding Rhode: An Event Planning Manual For Every Rhody Ram, Jennifer Nussinow

Senior Honors Projects

The University of Rhode Island has given me four outstanding years of an undergraduate experience. Throughout this time I have taken many classes, joined sports teams and clubs, and had jobs. In each of these opportunities I have had the pleasure of putting together numerous events as well as being a participant. As I began my journey of planning different functions, I ran into many problems, but more importantly found numerous solutions. However, the process was inefficient and required much time and effort. The system presently in place to help plan affairs was ineffective and rarely used. I found that …

Uri Student Bridge, Nicole Aragi May 2008

Uri Student Bridge, Nicole Aragi

Senior Honors Projects

The project that came to be known as URI Student Bridge began with my amazing college experience and my desire to share that experience with others who were making the decision of whether to begin a college experience of their own. I have been very fortunate to have the funding and motivation to attend college, and have had many opportunities that I know others may not ever have. There are many options and opportunities that are available for graduating high school students. Many choose to begin a career with a high school education and never even consider the idea of …

Survey Research On The Relationship Between Immediacy Behaviors, Communication Competency, And Philanthropic Success, Emily Cameron Drygas Apr 2008

Survey Research On The Relationship Between Immediacy Behaviors, Communication Competency, And Philanthropic Success, Emily Cameron Drygas

Communication

In this study, 124 Alaskan-based development professionals responded to a questionnaire concerning their perceived communicative competency and their self-reported immediacy behaviors in relation to fund-raising success. Several key findings resulted. First, in relation to the role of communication competency, this study suggests that fund-raising success is driven by the donor, rather than the fund-raising professional's communication competency. Second, the study found that successful fund-raising professionals have higher levels of verbal and non-verbal immediacy behaviors (when compared to non-successful fundraisers). Third, this study finds that development professionals who work in the geographic region of Northern Alaska use less verbal immediacy behaviors …

The University Of Alaska: How Is It Doing?, Theodore Kassier, Alexandra Hill Apr 2008

The University Of Alaska: How Is It Doing?, Theodore Kassier, Alexandra Hill

ISER Reports

Recent reports on higher education in the U.S. say it’s in trouble— that it’s too expensive, doesn’t offer enough need-based aid, isn’t educating people for today’s jobs, doesn’t demand enough of instructors or students, and isn’t sufficiently accountable to policymakers and taxpayers.1 Is the University of Alaska (UA)—the state’s only public university —offering a good, affordable education for Alaskans? This paper looks at that question. It first presents the available data on various measures and then summarizes successes and continuing challenges for UA. It ends with a discussion of how UA and the state are addressing higher-education issues and what …
