Development Of An Assessment Center As A Selection Method For I/O Graduate Applicants, Ting Tseng Jan 2011

Development Of An Assessment Center As A Selection Method For I/O Graduate Applicants, Ting Tseng

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

For over 70 years, assessment centers have contributed to employee selection, training, and development in organizations (Spychalski, Quinoies, Gaugler, & Pohley, 1997; Stephanie Haaland, 2002; Wendel & Joekel, 1991). However, they have not regularly been used for selection of students to an educational program. Given that assessment centers are effective at improving staffing in business settings, it can be speculated that they could also be effective in educational settings. The purpose of this research is to examine the feasibility of developing a selection-based assessment center for applicants to a graduate program in industrial-organizational psychology.

A Quantitative Study Into Grade Inflation (Perceived And Actual) In The College Of Business, Technologicl University Dublin, Derek Simon

Theses

Most academics have an opinion on the existence or otherwise of grade inflation. Some people deny the existence of grade inflation. Some argue that it is damaging to academia while some argue that it is a normal phenomenon and is not damaging while others assert that it is impossible to measure. Due to the difficulty in measurement of grade inflation this study was devised to measure firsts and distinctions to ascertain the quantity of grade inflation. This study takes a two pronged approach to discovering the real and perceived existence or otherwise of grade inflation in the College. In the …

EARTH is a private nonprofit international university located in the town of Guácimo in the province of Limón, a lowland region in the east of Costa Rica. EARTH derives its acronym from the Spanish title Escuela de Agricultura de la Región Tropical Húmeda (Agricultural School of the Humid Tropical Region). The W. K. Kellogg Foundation, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the Costa Rican government worked with other national and international agencies to create this unique university in the mid-1980s. The higher education initiative emerged from recognition that unsustainable agricultural practices were damaging and straining soil, water, forest, biological, …

Conceptualizing Doctoral Advising From Professors' And Doctoral Students' Perspectives Using Concept Mapping, Philip Kontor Adu Jan 2011

Conceptualizing Doctoral Advising From Professors' And Doctoral Students' Perspectives Using Concept Mapping, Philip Kontor Adu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Due to the high cost of doctoral education, high attrition of about 50%, and the constraints of higher education budgets, it is important to examine what causes doctoral students to leave their doctoral program without completion. Studies have shown that advising is one of the main contributing factors (e.g., Ferrer de Valero, 2001; Golde, 2000; Lenz, 1997). Document analysis of literature showed five distinct aspects of doctoral advising (i.e. advising approach, selection process, roles, responsibilities, and expectations, advisor-advisee relationship, and power relations) and their relation to the successful completion of students' dissertations. The purpose of this study was to use …

The Bottom Line: Accounting For Revenues And Expenditures In Intercollegiate Athletics, Victor Matheson, Debra J. O'Connor, Joseph H. Herberger

Economics Department Working Papers

This paper examines the profitability of Division I athletic programs at colleges and universities in the United States under a variety of accounting definitions of profit. The data identify several broad themes. First, a majority of athletic departments rely heavily on direct and indirect subsidization of their programs by the student body, the institution itself, and state governments in order to balance their books. Without such funding, less than a third of BCS athletic departments and no non-BCS departments are in the black. Second, athletic programs rely heavily on contributions to balance their books. Donations to athletic departments may serve …

Paradoxes Of Online Teaching, David E. Bair, Mary A. Bair Jan 2011

Paradoxes Of Online Teaching, David E. Bair, Mary A. Bair

Peer Reviewed Articles

While much attention is paid to students’ experiences in online courses, there is sparse information regarding the experiences of faculty who teach online. Two university instructors address this gap in the literature and present an analysis of their experiences teaching graduate and undergraduate teacher-education classes at a university in the Midwestern United States. In this collaborative self-study, the authors analyze data consisting of their reflections and discussions, anonymous student surveys, anonymous course evaluations, and online observations by other faculty. They argue that online instruction poses several paradoxes. These paradoxical experiences illuminate the need for additional research about faculty experiences with …

Implications Of Branding Initiatives In Higher Education Among Trademarked Institutions In California, Joy Victoria Lamboy Jan 2011

Implications Of Branding Initiatives In Higher Education Among Trademarked Institutions In California, Joy Victoria Lamboy

Doctoral Dissertations

Many educational institutions across the world create an image to attract students; this process is called branding. Branding began as a channel of choice for consumers and has grown to include what an organziation respresents in worth and values. Corporations commonly implement branding initiatives through trademark-licensing programs due to competition and infringements that mocked their services or marks. Specifically, corporations across the world wanted to be unique from others that might have similar offerings. Likewise, many college institutions such as Harvard, University of California Los Angeles, and the University of Southern California have branded their identity through the use of …

Lean And Its Impact On Employee Empowerment Within A Higher Education Institution, Bernadette J. Barber Jan 2011

Lean And Its Impact On Employee Empowerment Within A Higher Education Institution, Bernadette J. Barber

Theses and Dissertations

Institutions of higher education have been faced with economic challenges, funding shortfalls, endowment declines, layoffs, academic program cuts, rising tuition, and stiff global competition. These challenges are taking place at a time when students and other higher education constituencies are adding the pressure of consumer choice while expecting more responsive and comprehensive services, integrated use of technology, and managed costs. For some educational institutions, Lean--a total quality management approach--has become a tool for managing these challenges and expectations. Lean proponents also have suggested that incorporating Lean principles and processes results in higher levels of employee empowerment. The purpose of this …

The Influence Of Budget Allocation By Function On Student Retention Of Public Community Colleges In The Sixteen States In The Southern Region Education Board, Clayton Clendenin Burton Jan 2011

The Influence Of Budget Allocation By Function On Student Retention Of Public Community Colleges In The Sixteen States In The Southern Region Education Board, Clayton Clendenin Burton

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Stakeholders of higher education expect a positive return for their investment. One of the measures of success for higher education is persistence; one of the measures of persistence is retention rate. One segment of higher education, community colleges, receives a significant outlay of public resources in terms of government appropriations, student financial aid, and individual investment. This study follows the framework of Ryan (2004) and Gansemer-Topf and Schuh (2006) who successfully created models using the allocation of financial resources to predict graduation and retention rates for four-year colleges. Using data from the U. S. Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education …

Psychological Contracts And Loyal Boosterism: Giving Dance Training Institutions A Lift Through Word Of Mouth Promotion, Alicia Stanway Jan 2011

Psychological Contracts And Loyal Boosterism: Giving Dance Training Institutions A Lift Through Word Of Mouth Promotion, Alicia Stanway

Research outputs 2011

As the dance industry in Australia is well connected with industry networks, the value of word of mouth promotion and peer recommendation (operationalised as loyal boosterism) is paramount; however empirical evidence of this notion is relatively unexplored. This paper explores the relationship between relational psychological contracts, perceptions of psychological contract breach and loyal boosterism in the context of the dance training industry. The findings indicate that dancer’s who report higher relational contracts with their training organisation and experience lower levels of perceived contract breach, are more likely to engage in loyal boosterism behaviour. These findings highlight those relational contracts (containing …

Perceptions Of Social Mobility In Community College Scholars At Bucknell University, Nadir Sharif Jan 2011

Perceptions Of Social Mobility In Community College Scholars At Bucknell University, Nadir Sharif

Master’s Theses

While national leaders have joined the discussion more recently, scholars in the fields of education, psychology, and sociology, have been exploring the ways in which students? socioeconomic background affects the outcomes they experience as a result of their education (Lareau, Unequal Childhoods: Class, Race, and Family Life, 2003).Furthermore, the role played by the education system in creating or diminishing socioeconomic disparity has also been studied in depth (Bourdieu, 1977; Boudon, 1977). However, the journeys of students from low-income families that begin their education at community colleges and continue it, through careful planning or chance, at elite four-year institutions, has not …

A Model For Integrating A Career Development Course Program Into A College Curriculum, Charles Michael Austin Jan 2011

A Model For Integrating A Career Development Course Program Into A College Curriculum, Charles Michael Austin

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to address the need to practicalize higher education by expanding career coursework into an ongoing career curriculum, beginning in a student's freshman year of college. Career development needs to serve as a finishing school for a college degree, the place where all a student has learned is combined into an awareness of the talents and skills they have developed, and can now be marketed to potential employers. The working world has become a volatile environment, and we do our students a disservice if we do not properly prepare them for the reality of the …

A Study Of The Innovation, Creativity, And Leadership Skills Associated With The College-Level Millennial Generation, Melinda Lester

Theses and Dissertations

As the economy has become increasingly global, organizations whose employees are more creative and innovative compete at a higher level than those who do not. And, organizations that incorporate multi-generations into their workforce will realize more creativity and innovation within their organizations. Now, and in the future, leaders will encounter a new generation of employees that will challenge their leadership ability. The challenges addressed in this study gravitate to these areas: Creativity and innovative abilities that will compete in the global economy; the Millennial Generation and their unrealized creative skills due to the influence of the No Child Left Behind …

The Implementation Of Pre-Lecture Resources To Reduce In-Class Cognitive Load: A Case Study For Higher Education Chemistry, Michael Seery, Roisin Donnelly Jan 2011

The Implementation Of Pre-Lecture Resources To Reduce In-Class Cognitive Load: A Case Study For Higher Education Chemistry, Michael Seery, Roisin Donnelly

Articles

This case study describes an effective method to ameliorate the cognitive load caused by new terminology and concepts in lectures. Ten online pre-lecture resources whose design was underpinned by the principles of cognitive load theory were provided to a class of 49 first year university level chemistry students. Each resource introduced a number of key concepts to the forthcoming lecture and included a quiz for students to test understandings and identify misconceptions. The evaluation of the implementation of resources was measured by considering the difference in exam marks for in-semester test and end of module exam. These showed that the …
